SAFETY MONDAY
SPOTTERS
Spotters play an important role at a landfill, on the tipping floor and on the street,
–– anywhere a vehicle may have to back-up. Spotters protect pedestrians and
property when a truck or heavy equipment move in reverse. However spotters
themselves can be at risk for injury or even death and also need protection.
Employers can implement the following actions to help keep spotters safe:
• Ensure that spotters and drivers agree on hand signals before backing up.
• Instruct spotters to always maintain visual contact with the driver while the
vehicle is backing.
• Instruct drivers to stop backing immediately if they lose sight of the spotter.
• Do not give spotters additional duties while they are acting as spotters.
• Instruct spotters not to use personal mobile phones, personal headphones
or other items which could pose a distraction during spotting activities.
• Provide spotters with high-visibility clothing, especially during night
operations.

Observadores
Observadores tienen un papel muy importante en el vertedero, en el piso de
inflexión y en la calle –– en cualquier ambiente donde un vehículo tiene que
ir en reversa. Los observadores protegen a los pedantes y a propiedades
cuando un camión o maquinaria pesada este dando marcha atrás. Pero, los
observadores mismos pueden estar en peligro porque se pueden herir o el
algunos casos fallecer y entonces ellos también necesitan protección.
Empleadores pueden implementar las siguientes acciones para mantener el
bien estar de observadores:
• Asegurar que los observadores y los conductores estén de acuerdo
sobre las señales de mano que van a usa
• Dirigir a los observadores que siempre mantengan contacto visual con
los conductores cuando vehículos están en marcha a atrás
• No asignar responsabilidades adicionales a los observadores cuando
están observando
• Dirigir a los observadores a que no usen teléfonos celulares personales,
audífonos u otros aparatos que puedan presentar una distracción
mientras que están observando
• Proveerles a los observadores ropa de alta-visibilidad, mas que todo en
horas nocturnas
