Give Thanks for Our Blessings
There is a Haitian proverb which says when you give thanks you are also saying “do
this again.” Gratitude always pulls in more gifts. When we give thanks, we are recognizing what was freely given, that which we did not earn nor did anything to deserve.
This attitude, a product of humility and simplicity, always invites us to give more. And
it also invites us to imitate those who generously give. When Jesus picks up the bread,
the first thing he did was to give thanks. We must give thanks no matter how insignificant it may appear, according to today’s readings. Clearly, the bread presented to Jesus
by the disciples was not sufficient to feed the multitude. Yet, Jesus gave thanks. There
are often times where we can’t stop feeling sorry for ourselves over the things we don’t
have, instead of giving thanks for what we do. No matter how small it may be in giving
thanks, the action of giving is multiplied.
We may often think that we have nothing to offer the community. We don’t have very
much talent or time, or we don’t think we have the necessary capabilities. But that was
the same thing the friends of Jesus said: they didn’t have enough to feed themselves,
much less to feed five thousand people. But by giving thanks and presenting it to God, it
was multiplied. It is in the sharing that things become multiplied.
Interestingly, what becomes multiplied is only what is given entirely. If it remains
stashed away, the possibility of being multiplied ceases to exist. By not giving thanks
for what little we have and not putting it into the service of others, it does not have the
opportunity to multiply and give fruit. It is not that this happens sometimes and not others, by chance or at random. Every time you give, it happens. What we give is returned
to us, increased and multiplied a thousand ways.
For Reflection
What am I afraid to give to others out of the fear that it will run out? What excuses or
justifications do I use so that I don’t have to be devoted to my work, mission or task?

Y deseo vivamente recibirte
Dentro de mi alma,
Pero no pudiendo hacerlo
Ahora sacramentalmente,
Venid al menos
Espiritualmente a mi corazón.
Y como si ya os hubiese recibido,
Os abrazo y me uno del todo a Ti.
Señor, no permitas que jamás me aparte
de Ti. Amén.
Congratulations
