El Real Jardín Botánico conserva las colecciones botánicas procedentes de las expediciones científicas españolas, que se organizaron
durante los siglos XVIII y XIX. Entre éstas, destaca la Expedición
alrededor del mundo dirigida por Alejandro Malaspina y, entre otras
la de Martín Sessé a México, la de José Celestino Mutis a Colombia
o la de Hipólito Ruiz y José Pavón a Perú y Chile.
En las colecciones sobresalen las descripciones de plantas, dibujos,
plantas secas, entre otros materiales. Además los expedicionarios enviaron semillas para que fueran sembradas en los parterres del Jardín,
y así, poder estudiarlas a su vuelta. Hoy en día podemos ver ejemplos
de las mismas especies cultivadas en aquellos tiempos. Con este itinerario, les invitamos a descubrir la interesante historia del Jardín y de
las expediciones científicas españolas.
Conserved at the Royal Botanical Garden are botanical collections
dating back to the spanish scientific expeditions of the 18th and 19th
centuries.The Expedition around the world led by Alejandro Malaspina
stands out as one of the most important expeditions of the time, as do
those expeditions by Martín Sessé to Mexico, José Celestino Mutis to
Columbia, and Hipólito Ruiz and José Pavón to Peru and Chile.
The expeditionists sent descriptions, drawings, and dried plants and
materials to the Garden where they are still preserved today. In order to continue their studies in the future they also sent seeds to the
garden to be harvested. Today, the Garden is still home to some of the
same plants harvested during that time, and we invite visitors to come
experience the garden’s rich history for themselves and learn more
about spanish scientific expeditions.
