Dear Parishioners,
As Lent moves into its final full week, God has gathered us here today to
witness and to ponder the new things that God is doing. How has your
Lent been? Have you made progress on your repentance and reconciliation? It’s still not too late! God calls you even now. Just as Saint Paul continues in his pursuit of the goal, so can we all continue to grow in our faith
and love of God.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK
FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
Monday:
SIN NO MORE
We have been striving through Lent to repent of our sins and
failings, and to follow Jesus more closely. Here in the story of
the woman caught in adultery, we see Jesus forgiving the woman, saving her from a horrible death, and urging her not to sin
any more. This is a new thing, one that brings out something
for which the law had not allowed--forgiveness. Of course one
can sin no more if they are dead, caught in their sins forever.
But Jesus introduces the concepts of
forgiveness and reconciliation. SOMETHING NEW
Both Isaiah and Paul proclaim that
"something new" is happening in Jesus.
Isaiah says, "Remember not the events
of the past, the things of long ago consider not; see, I am doing something
new!" He prophesied that God, in Christ, will do something
beyond the strict boundaries of the law. He will introduce forgiveness beyond the sacrifice of animals in the temple. He will
sacrifice himself, the unblemished Lamb; the sacrifice that ends
the Old Covenant and begins something very new. Paul says, "I
consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord . . . not having any righteousness of my own based on the law but that which comes through
faith in Christ." To have faith does not just mean to assent to
some formula of the law in our minds, but always to trust in the
saving power of Christ in our lives. This comes to us through
the pure grace of God. Forgiveness is a gift that allows us to
forget the sins of our past and move forward to the new life of
God. "[F]orgetting what lies behind but straining forward to
what lies ahead, I continue my pursuit toward the goal, the
prize of God's upward calling, in Christ Jesus."

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY ‐ FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
How fitting that the first Sunday Angelus of Pope Francis, who has made mercy his papacy’s theme,
took place the last time today’s Gospel about Jesus’ encounter with the adulterous woman was proclaimed.
“Jesus’ attitude is striking,” Francis declared. “We do not hear words of scorn or condemnation, only words
of love, of mercy, an invitation to conversion: ‘Neither do I condemn you’ ” (John 8:11). Francis continued:
“God’s face is the face of a merciful father who is always patient. Have you thought about God’s patience,
the patience [God] has with each one of us? That is [God’s] mercy. [God] always has patience, patience with us . . . understands us .
. . waits for us . . . does not tire of forgiving us” if we return ‘with a contrite heart” (Pope Francis, Angelus address, March 17, 2013).
Parishes preparing catechumens may proclaim Jesus’ raising of Lazarus. Referring to Lazarus, and all those “raised” from the
“death” of sin, Jesus defines the community’s “mission of mercy”— “Untie him and let him go” (John 11:44).

THE 2016 LENTEN FOOD APPEAL
In the words of Pope Francis, Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us through the word of God and the sacraments so that we become more like Christ, servants of
God and others. At St. Martha’s and St. Rose parishes, Lent is a time when we can do something for the poorest, weakest and most
insignificant members of our local community. Lent is a time for showing this concern for others by small yet concrete signs of our
belonging to the one human family. Our combined parishes continue to provide food assistance to some 450 families and homeless
every month. Your ongoing support of this effort is a continuing generosity and blessing, but in Lent especially, we ask for donations of non-perishable food (or money), on Sunday, March 13th.

Estimados Feligreses,
Al acercarnos a la semana final de Cuaresma, Dios nos ha reunido hoy
aquí para presenciar y reflexionar sobre las cosas nuevas que Él está haciendo. ¿Cómo ha sido la Cuaresma para ti? ¿Has podido progresar en
arrepentimiento y reconciliación? ¡Todavía hay tiempo! Dios te llama ahora. Así como San Pablo sigue en pos de la meta, nosotros también podemos
seguir creciendo en nuestra fe y amor por Dios.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA
QUINTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
Lunes:
NO PEQUES MÁS
Durante la Cuaresma nos hemos esforzados por arrepentirnos
de nuestros pecados y faltas y por seguir más de cerca a Jesús.
Aquí en la historia de la mujer sorprendida en adulterio, vemos
a Jesús que perdona a la mujer, salvándola de una horrible
muerte a pedradas y diciéndole que no vuelva a pecar. Todo
esto es una novedad, una que trae algo que la Ley no había permitido: el perdón. Desde luego uno ya no podría seguir pecando si se estuviera muerto, estando atrapados en nuestros pecados por siempre. Pero Jesús introduce las
acciones del perdón y la reconciliación.
ALGO NUEVO
Tanto Isaías como Pablo proclaman que
“algo nuevo” está pasando en Jesús.
Isaías dice “No recuerden lo pasado ni
piensen en lo antiguo: yo voy a realizar
algo nuevo”. Él profetiza que Dios, en
Cristo, hará algo más allá de los estrictos límites de la Ley. Él
presentará al perdón más allá del sacrificio de animales en el
templo. Él mismo se sacrificará, el cordero sin mancha; el sacrificio que termina la Antigua Alianza y comienza con algo
nuevo. Pablo dice “Nada vale la pena en comparación con el
bien supremo, que consiste en conocer a Cristo Jesús, mi Señor . . . no porque haya obtenido la justificación que proviene
de la ley, sino la que procede de la fe en Cristo Jesús”. Tener fe
no significa repetir de memoria mandamientos religiosos, sino
siempre confiar en el poder salvador de Jesucristo en nuestras
vidas. Esto viene a nosotros por medio de la gracia de Dios. El
perdón es un don que nos permite olvidar los pecados de nuestro pasado y avanzar hacia la nueva vida en Dios. “Olvido lo
que he dejado atrás, y me lanzo hacia delante, en busca de la
meta y del trofeo al que Dios, por medio de Cristo Jesús, nos
llama desde el cielo”.

AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA ‐ QUINTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
Otra de tantas coincidencias sucede otra vez, el primer Ángelus que rezó el Papa Francisco fue en la fecha en
la última vez que se proclamó la historia del Evangelio de hoy, el encuentro de Jesús con la mujer adultera . .
. En ese entonces el Papa Francisco dijo que "la actitud de Jesús es sorprendente". "No escuchamos palabras
de condenación o desprecio, solo palabras de amor, de misericordia, una invitación a la conversión:
'Tampoco yo te condeno' " (Juan 8:11). El Papa Francisco continua diciendo: "el rostro de Dios es el de un
padre misericordioso, que siempre tiene paciencia. ¿Han pensado en la paciencia de Dios, la paciencia que tiene con cada uno de
nosotros? Ésa es su misericordia. Siempre tiene paciencia, paciencia con nosotros, nos comprende, nos espera, no se cansa de perdonarnos si sabemos volver a él con el corazón contrito" (Papa Francisco, Rezo del Ángelus del 17 de marzo de 2013). Las parroquias
que están preparando a catecúmenos pueden proclamar la historia de Lázaro cuando vuelve a la vida. Refiriéndose a Lázaro y a todos
aquellos que "se despertaron" de la "muerte" del pecado, Jesús define la "misión de misericordia" de la comunidad: "Desátenlo y
déjenlo ir" (Juan 11:44).

CAMPAÑA CUARESMAL DE ALIMENTOS 2016
En las palabras del Papa Francisco, la Cuaresma es un tiempo de renovación para toda la Iglesia, para cada comunidad y para cada
creyente. Nosotros, el Pueblo de Dios, necesitamos renovación interior, para no convertirnos en indiferentes y egoístas. La Cuaresma
es el tiempo favorable para dejar que Cristo nos sirva a través de la Palabra de Dios y los sacramentos y asemejarnos más a él; servidores de Dios y los otros. En las parroquias Sta. Marta y Sta. Rosa de Lima, la Cuaresma es un tiempo en el hacemos algo por los
más pobres, los más débiles e insignificantes miembros de nuestra comunidad local. La Cuaresma es un tiempo para demostrar nuestra preocupación por los otros a través de signos pequeños pero concretos de que somos una familia. Ambas parroquias unidas continúan ofreciendo ayuda a unas 450 familias mensualmente. Tu apoyo continuo a esta obra es una bendición, pero pedimos especialmente tus donaciones de alimentos no perecederos o dinero el Domingo 13 de Marzo.
