School Smarts Academy begins this
Thursday (9/10) for seven weeks. Learn about
how school systems work and how parents can
make a big difference by being effectively
involved – as partners and advocates. Meetings
are Thursday mornings from 8:15-9:45 am at
Edison on: September 10, 17, 24 October 1, 8,
22, and 29. Contact Yoly Gutierrez at ext. 61312 or email her at [email protected] if
you would like to grab one of the last spots.
Volunteers Needed – Would you be
interested in helping improve our campus
recycling programs? Or help increase safety at
pick up or drop off? Then we need you! Please

Volunteer Training –Attention new or
renewing volunteers, there’s a second volunteer
training Thursday evening September 10 at 6:30
p.m. in the Edison library. If you don’t know if
it’s time to re-apply, check with Yoly.
Family Movie Night - Mark your
calendars for the first 2015-2016 Family Movie
Night on Friday, September 25th! Bring your
own picnic dinner and blanket and enjoy a
movie from 5:30-8:00 p.m. with your friends in
the Edison Cafetorium. Movie will begin at
6pm. We will also have a book swap. Bring a
used children’s book that you are ready to give
away and trade it for another book! Popcorn
and drinks will be sold. More details to come!
PTA Association Meeting – Wed.,
September 16 is our first association meeting of
the year. Come and hear about plans for the
year, tell us your ideas about good topics for
parent education or family events, and see how
you’d like to help! PTA Members will also vote
on the PTA budget, If you have not yet joined
the PTA this year, please do so now.

SEPTEMBER IS SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
AWARENESS MONTH
Why do schools make such a big deal about student attendance?
Primarily because regular school attendance has a huge impact on student
success. The potential negative effects on children of chronic absenteeism
really are huge. Researchers who looked at the connection between
absences in Kindergarten and First grade and the reading scores of children
rd
after 3 grade found that only 43% of children who have missed more than 9
st
days each year in Kindergarten and 1 grade are reading on grade level after
third grade. Only 41% of children who have missed 18 or more days in either
rd
K or 1 are fluent readers. And the number of fluent readers after 3 grade
sinks to a staggering low of only 17% if children have missed 18 or more
days in both years. Children who are not reading at grade level by grade 3
are far more likely to experience problems in high school and to drop out of
school, so we all need to be pulling together to support early reading.
The need for time in the classroom is even more critical in dual
language programs, where all children are learning in two languages. High
absenteeism not only affects reading, but also language acquisition.
Excessive absences and tardies also affect the entire school community
when teachers have to slow down instruction to help children who have
been absent catch up with the class.
Sometimes as parents we don’t realize how many absences our
children have accumulated. That’s one of the reasons we’ll be sending you
periodic letters if your child’s absences are passing into the danger zone.
Please make every effort this year to have satisfactory attendance.
Set a regular bedtime and lay out clothes and backpacks the night before.
Avoid medical appointments and vacations when school is in session. Have a
back-up plan for getting your child to school – for the full day -- if you have
an appointment so your child doesn’t miss instructional time. Keep them
home when they’re sick – but don’t let children stay home if they are not
truly sick. And let us know if your child is resisting coming to school so that
we can work together to reduce anxiety or solve a problem.
We’ll be tracking and recognizing perfect attendance and on-time
arrivals this year. Check the windows near cafecito for monthly updates and
recognition. Here’s to a year of good attendance so all our students have
the opportunity to learn and we build those academic foundations that will
allow them to be successful each year!

Academia de Inteligencias Escolares –
comienza este jueves (9/10) por siete semanas.
Aprendan sobre el sistema escolar y cómo los padres
pueden hacer una gran diferencia y ser involucrados

reuniones son los jueves por la mañana de 8:15 –

Entrenamiento de Voluntarios – Atención

Noche Familiar de Películas – ¡Marquen sus
calendarios para la primer Noche Familiar de
Películas del 2015 – 2016 el viernes, 25 de
septiembre! Traigan su picnic de cena y una cobija y
disfruten la película de las 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. con sus
amigos en la cafetería de Edison. La película
comienza a las 6:00 p.m. Tendremos un intercambio
de libros. ¡Traigan libros usados de niños que están
listos para regalar o cambiar por otro libro! Se
venderán palomitas y bebidas. ¡Vendrán más

Reunión de Asociación de la PTA – el
miércoles 16 de septiembre es nuestra primera
reunión de asociación del año. ¡Vengan y escuchen
sobre planes para el año, díganos sus ideas sobre
buenos temas para la educación de padres o eventos
familiares, y vean como les gustaría ayudar! Los
miembros de la PTA también van a votar en el
presupuesto de la PTA, si aún no se han unido a la
PTA, por favor háganlo.
Apoyando la Lectura Temprana: Un Taller
para Padres de 2º Grado – Acompañen al maestro
de Lectura John Ellis para aprender estrategias para
apoyar a los lectores de 2º grado el martes, 15 de
septiembre a las 8:30 am en la biblioteca.

SEPTIEMBRE ES EL MES CONCIENCIA DE ASISTENCIA
¿Por qué hacen tanta emoción las escuelas sobre la asistencia
estudiantil? Primariamente porque la asistencia regular en la escuela tiene
un gran impacto en el éxito estudiantil. Los posibles efectos negativos en
los niños de ausencias crónicas realmente son grandes. Los investigadores
quienes miraron la conexión entre las ausencias en el Kindergarten y Primer
Grado y las calificaciones de lectura de los niños después del 3º grado
encontraron que solamente el 43% de los niños quienes faltaron más de 9
días cada año en Kindergarten y 1º grado están leyendo a nivel de grado
después del 3º grado. Solamente el 41% de los niños quienes faltaron 18 o
más días en Kindergarten o 1º son lectores fluidos. Y la cantidad de
lectores fluidos después del 3º grado se reduce a un bajo de 17% de
niños quienes han faltado 18 o más en ambos años. Los niños quienes no
están leyendo a nivel de grado para el 3º grado son más probables de tener
problemas en la preparatoria y salirse de la escuela, así es que todos
debemos trabajar juntos para apoyar la lectura temprana.
La necesidad de tener tiempo en el salón es aún más crítico en
programas de doble inmersión, donde todos los niños están aprendiendo en
dos idiomas. Una alta cantidad de ausencias no solamente afecta lectura,
pero también la adquisición de lenguaje. Ausencias y tardanzas excesivas
también afectan a la comunidad escolar entera cuando los maestros tienen
que detener la instrucción para ayudar a los niños quienes han estado
ausentes para ponerlos al corriente con la clase.
A veces como padres no nos damos cuenta de cuantas ausencias
nuestros niños han acumulado. Esa es una de las razones por las cuales les
mandaremos cartas periódicamente si las ausencias de su hijo/a están
pasando hacia la zona de peligro.
Por favor hagan cada esfuerzo este año para tener asistencia
satisfactoria. Fijen un tiempo regular para dormir y preparen la ropa y las
mochilas la noche anterior. Eviten citas médicas y vacaciones cuando las
clases están en sesión. Tengan un plan auxiliar para traer a su hijo/a a la
escuela – para el día completo – si tienen una cita para que su hijo/a no
pierda tiempo de instrucción. Manténganlos en casa cuando estén enfermos
– pero no dejen que los niños se queden en casa si no están realmente
enfermos. Y avísenos si su hijo/a está resistiendo venir a la escuela para
que podamos trabajar juntos para reducir ansiedad o resolver un problema.
Estaremos revisando y reconociendo asistencia perfecta y llegadas
a tiempo este año. Revisen las ventanas cerca del cafecito para los informes
mensuales y reconocimientos. ¡Esto es para un año de buena asistencia para
que todos nuestros estudiantes tengan la oportunidad de aprender y creamos
la fundación académica que les permitirá ser exitosos cada año.

September – November 2015
Family Movie Night
September 25th, 2015; 5:30-8pm (movie starts at 6pm)
What is this event?
Family Movie Night is open to students and families from all grade levels. It usually happens on a Friday evening. A
movie and an activity are planned for families. Snacks and drinks are sold at this event. For this first Family Movie Night, it
will be a Bring Your Own Dinner event. The movie will be The Book of Life.
How can parents/families get involved?
You and your children can come and enjoy an evening with other Edison families and watch a fun, kid-friendly
movie. You can also volunteer at the event with set-up, event activities or clean-up.
Art Reflections
October 12th – 23rd, 2015
What is this event?
Art Reflections is a National PTA program. At Edison, we hold lunchtime art workshops for kids to produce their
own piece of art based on the theme given each year. Students’ artwork are then showcased at our annual Fall Festival/
Día de los muertos. Edison families will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite artwork. The artwork with the most
votes from each grade level will be submitted to the Council PTA for further competition.
How can parents/families get involved?
You can volunteer during the scheduled lunchtime art workshops in October. Parents will help with setting up art
tables and supervising students, during their lunch hour, as they create their artwork.
Fall Festival / Día de los Muertos
November 7th, 2015; 1pm-5pm
What is this event?
This celebration is a fall festival that also marks el Día de los muertos. Traditionally, it features food booths,
musical entertainment, traditional crafts, games, tours, and altars (created by each class).
How can parents/families get involved?
You can help on one of many subcommittees that will be preparing various things for the festival. There will also be
many volunteer jobs on the actual day of the event. Please look out for volunteer sign-ups in late September!

Noche de cine para la familia

¿Qué es este evento?
La noche de cine es para todos los estudiantes de Edison y sus familias. Generalmente, ésta tiene lugar los
viernes en la tarde. Se organiza una película y alguna actividad familiar, se venden tentempiés y refrescos. La primera
noche será “Traiga su propia cena”. La película será El libro de la vida.
¿Cómo se puede ayudar?
Puede venir esa tarde y divertirse con otras familias de Edison y mirar una película con las/os niñas/os. También,
puede ser voluntario durante el evento y ayudar con los preparativos, durante la película o con la limpieza.
Reflexiones de Arte de PTA
Del 12 al 23 de octubre
¿Qué es este evento?
Las Reflexiones de Arte de PTA son parte de un programa de la PTA a nivel nacional. En Edison, tenemos talleres
de arte durante el recreo de almuerzo y los estudiantes pueden realizar sus trabajos artísticos basados en un tema. En el
pasado, los trabajos se han mostrado en el Festival de Otoño/ Día de los muertos. Las familias de Edison tienen la
oportunidad de votar por sus obras favoritas, y las obras con más voto de cada grado se envían al concurso del Council de
PTA.
¿Cómo se puede ayudar?
Usted puede ser voluntaria/o en los talleres a la hora de almuerzo durante el mes de octubre. Los papás y las
mamás van a ayudar con los preparativos o asistiendo a los estudiantes en sus trabajos.
Festival de otoño / Día de los muertos
El 7 de noviembre; 1:00 – 5:00 en la tarde
¿Qué es este evento?
Esta celebración es un festival de otoño y también se conmemora el día de los muertos. Tradicionalmente, se
vende comida y hay música, artesanías tradicionales, juegos y altares (creado por cada clase).
¿Cómo se puede ayudar?
Participé en el sub-comité que está preparando el festival. También, hay muchas oportunidades para ser
voluntario en el día del evento. Por favor, busque los lugares para apuntarse (sign-ups) durante septiembre.
