4B Grammar Notes- Nosotros Commands and Possessive Pronouns
Español 3: 4B Grammar Me llamo _____________________ Mandatos con Nosotros There are two ways to suggest that others do some activity with you (Let’s ________). 1. You can use the construction Vamos a + infinitive. Vamos a hacer las paces. = Let’s make up. 2. You can also use a command with a nosotros form. The nosotros command is the same as the nosotros form of the present subjective. Resolvamos el conflicto. = Let’s resolve our conflict. No reaccionemos tan rápido. = Let’s not react so quickly. Remember that stem-‐changing verbs whose infinitive ends in –ir have a stem change of e-‐i, or o-‐u in the nosotros form. Pidamos perdón por el malentendido. = Let’s ask for forgiveness from the misunderstanding. No durmamos al aire libre. = Let’s not sleep outside. Verbs whose infinitive ends in –car,-‐gar, or –zar have a spelling change in the nosotros form of the present subjunctive and consequently of the nosotros command. No critiquemos a nuestros padres. = Let’s not criticize our parents. Empecemos a pensar un poco en ellos. = Let’s start thinking about them a little. Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns are attached to the end of affirmative nosotros commands, but go before the verb of the negative nosotros command form. Celebremos la amistad. = Celebrémosla. Digámosle todo. No le mintamos. When attaching reflexive or reciprocal pronouns at the end of a nosotros command, drop the final –
s of the command before the pronoun. ¡Alegrémonos con sus éxitos! Atrevámonos a darles nuestras opiniones. **Remember when you add any type of pronoun to a command you add an accent on the stressed vowel in the third to last syllable. Pronombres Posesivos To form the possessive pronouns, use the long form of possessive adjectives preceded by the definite article. Both the article and the possessive must agree in number and gender with the noun they replace. Mis padres son muy serios. ¿Y los tuyos? Los míos son bastante divertidos. Tu familia es muy pequeña. La mía es bastante grande. ** We often omit the article between verb ser and the possessive pronoun. Esas maletas son nuestras. Mi hermano siempre dice que toda la cupla es mía. el la los las + mío,a (s) = my/mine tuyo,a (s) = your/yours suyo,a (s) = your/yours, his, her/hers nuestro,a(s) = our/ours vuestro,a (s) = your/yours suyo,a (s) = your/yours, their/theirs (Remember possessive adjectives (mi,tu,su,nuestro, vuestro). That is the short form that goes before a noun. The long form is used with the definite article for clarity or emphasis.
