Dear Parent,
In our classroom, we are learning about solving math problems by counting and adding
groups of objects together, with help from a PBS online game called “Vegetable Harvest”
featuring characters from the PBS KIDS® series Sid the Science Kid.
Count and add as you cook and eat:
As you prepare meals, invite your child to help:
•Ask your child to gather the ingredients to help you get
ready. Specify a certain number of each item (such as two
slices of red pepper and six lettuce leaves).
•Place the items in separate groups on the table. Say: “Let’s
figure out the total number of vegetables we have.”
•Have your child “push the items together” and count them
as a group.
•Then say: “Two red pepper slices plus six lettuce leaves
equals a total of eight.”
•Place the ingredients in a bowl and complete the meal
preparation.
•Have your child eat what you’ve prepared with the
ingredients you added together!
