Time flies by so fast when we are having a lot of fun, and doing a lot of good things. In our churches, we continue to count our blessings, and as your pastor, I feel proud to see that many good things are happening around us, and we are being pro-active in building our community. We are blessed because of the launching of our newly renamed Kankakee Catholic Food Pantry. We had a representation from all four Catholic Churches in Kankakee, and it spoke greatly of the unifying power of holy work. When we have common goals to do good to others in the name of our love of God, we build community! Thanks to the many volunteers who continue to work at our food pantry. Thank you to the many parishioners and good-hearted people who support the cause of feeding the hungry. Thank you to those who have been part of it, and the others who will step up to volunteer or promote it. I also thank God for the people who come to receive the food; they make our ministry meaningful. God is good and we are blessed! We are blessed that at this point, our Catholic School System in the Kankakee Deanery is on its way to a promising start of the school year, as well as an equally exciting beginning of the launching of the unified Faith Formation program of our three churches. These transitions are successful because of the leadership work of many people. I want to say a specific thank you to Terry Granger and his team for all the efforts that have been put into the McNamara Catholic School System in our community. I also want to say thank you to Sr. Rose Urbanczyk, Carolyn Levy, Diana Mendoza and their team for the preparations that were done in developing our Kankakee Catholic Faith Formation Program. What a great investment for the future of our children and the next generation of Catholics in our community. I am blessed to have an opportunity to observe the Year of Mercy through a cruise retreat that I have organized with my pilgrimage community. This retreat experience begins this weekend, and as I embark on this special journey, I promise to pray for our churches and for the many people that are seeking for intercession. I want to take this opportunity to clarify that in my 12 years as a priest, I have NEVER gone beyond the allotted number of time away (vacation, retreat and continuing education) that the diocese prescribes for our diocesan priests. I never thought that I needed to explain the allotment of my time away within each fiscal year until someone actually called my attention and questioned it. Thankfully, I always write down my yearly schedule vis-à-vis the diocesan prescription on a sheet to make sure that I can readily account for it. I have always thought of myself as a conscientious and responsible person, but for those who need reassurance, I am open to discuss my time away with anybody that needs it. As I always say, “Church, stay happy, healthy and holy!” In many ways, we are blessed and I ask that we always take the time to consider those blessings that overflow around us always. You are always in my heart, and know that by the grace of God, I will be back a better person and better priest! God bless us all. With my utmost love and respect, Fr. Well, here are some more personal reasons...Studies at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland tells us we look better when we smile and people treat you differently. You’re viewed as attractive, reliable, relaxed and sincere. Smiling faces always send a message, don’t they? So the challenge this week is: Put a smile on your face at least as often as you put it in your text messages. Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Aug. 7, 2016 “Perhaps one of your friends has become pregnant unexpectedly. Jesus tells his beloved “little flock”, that includes us, to sell belongings and give alms. Do not be afraid. Sell. Give. Yet, we are sometimes afraid to let go, to give away. I really like this, we say. I might need it later, we say. Since we are numbered among his disciples, what Jesus said to Peter and to the rest of the Followers, he says to us: Do no fear! Give alms! Be ready to act for the benefit of others; be ready to do what is good! So, this week, I will _______________________! ST TERESA PARISH PAGE 6 There was a young man who lived in a village and was at times hired for daily wages to work in the nearby town. One day in a dream an angel appeared to him and asked, “Are you happy?” “What? Happiness for someone like me who is always unemployed? If I get a good job I would be happier.” “Ok, the angel said, tomorrow you will get a job.” As the angel said, he got a job in a bank as a peon. He was so happy and enjoyed his life, but after a year the angel again appeared and asked, “Hey son, are you happy?” “What happiness does a peon have in the bank? If I had clerk post I would be still happier.” “The angel said ok, as you wished you will get the job of a clerk tomorrow.” The next day he was promoted and received the clerical post. He was so happy having more money and more friends, and he felt proud of himself. After a year the same angel appeared one more time and repeated the same question. The man said, “I am not happy because I do not have a house according to the status of my post.” The angel said, “Do not worry my son, tomorrow you will get enough money.” The next day he won the raffle ticket for a hundred thousand dollars and he built a beautiful house. The angel decided to visit him one more time after completing a year and asked him if he was happy. The man replied, “Now I have everything I have desired, but still I am missing one thing, that is happiness. I have everything but happiness.” The angel said, “Real happiness is the sole possession of God; only God can give you real happiness.” Any amount of precious and valuable things and comforts of this world will make us really happy and content. Yet the greed and avarice will be multiplied. Elsewhere in the bible we read, “ I have tasted all the pleasures that a man can enjoy. I did not deny anything that my eyes have desired, there is nothing that I have not tasted, but everything was mere illusion and dreamlike.” Everything that we do 24/7 is to bring happiness, but we never attain what we desired, for we look for it in the wrong place. The book of Ecclesiastes says, “All human toil is for the mouth, yet the appetite is never satisfied.” (Eccl 6:7) As the birds are flying in the sky and fish swimming in the water, man has to live with God always. When our focus of attention goes away from God we will be agitated and stirring. “For who can eat or drink apart from God? For to the one who pleases God, he gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the one who displeases, God gives the task of gathering possessions for the one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chase after wind.” (Eccl 2:25-26). Therefore let us turn our attention towards God and make God and us happy. Have a good week! Rev..
