THE MYSTERIOUS ONE
Last Sunday we gathered with Peter, John, and
James at the mountain of Transfiguration and were summoned to listen to God’s chosen Son. This week the scriptures draw us into the mystery of just who that God is.
The first reading, perhaps one of the best known in the
Bible, recounts the story of Moses and the burning bush,
when the mysterious divine name is revealed. The responsorial psalm is a hymn extolling the attributes of God.
Saint Paul and the Lord Jesus describe a God who judges
and metes out punishment. No matter the lengths to which
the scriptures go, we know that no amount of words will
ever come close to capturing who God is. Our lives and
our Lents are really journeys toward that mysterious One
who will one day welcome us into the heavenly home that
awaits those who put their trust in God alone.
EL MISTERIOSO
El domingo pasado nos reunimos con Pedro, Juan
y Santiago en el monte de la Transfiguración y se nos ordenó escuchar al Hijo elegido de Dios. Esta semana las
escrituras nos llevan al misterio de quién es Dios. La primera lectura, tal vez una de las más conocidas de la Biblia, relata la historia de Moisés y la zarza ardiente, cuando el misterioso nombre divino es revelado. El salmo responsorial es un himno que exalta los atributos de Dios.
San Pablo y el Señor Jesús describen a Dios que juzga y
castiga. De muchas maneras la Sagrada Escritura lo intenta, pero no hay suficientes palabras que siquiera se
aproximen a capturar lo que es Dios. Nuestras vidas y
nuestras Cuaresmas son realmente caminos hacia el Misterioso que un día nos dará la bienvenida al hogar celestial que espera a los que ponen su confianza sólo en Dios.

directs him to go and deliver the Israelites from Egypt
(Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15) or Exodus 17:3-7.

Second Reading — We are not to grumble like the people with Moses in the desert (1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12)

RITO DE INICIACIÓN CRISTIANA DE ADULTOS (RICA):

The Period of Purification and Enlightenment. As the name of
this period suggests the purification of the Elect takes place
through the Scrutiny Rites. These are major rites during this
period. Scrutinies in this sense mean a “self-searching and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. The Scrutinies
are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or
sinful in the hearts of the Elect; to bring out, then strengthen all
that is upright, strong, and good. They are celebrated in order to
deliver the Elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect
them against temptation, and to give them strength in
Christ.” (RCIA, 141). The three Scrutinies are celebrated on the
3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent. The Gospels are taken from
Cycle A with John as the Evangelist. The first Scrutiny Gospel
is “The Samaritan Woman” the second Scrutiny Gospel is “ The
Blind Man,” and the 3rd Scrutiny Gospel is “The Raising of
Lazarus.– The symbols of baptism are powerfully evoked from
these Gospels: water (death and life); light (Jesus is the light)
and new Life (Jesus gives new life)

relationship with the La Salette Missionaries way back in the

El Periodo de Purificación y Aclaración Como indica el nombre

The meaning of the different parts of the Liturgy (Mass) Liturgy of the Word. Last week
El significado de las diferentes partes de la Liturgia (Misa) continuado de la semana pasada.
Liturgia de la Palabra. La semana pasada tratamos lo importante que es de la observancia del
silencio después de la Primera y la Segunda Lecturas y después de la homilía. También habíamos
dicho que el silencio es una manera “activa, consciente, y completa de participar en la liturgia.” Nos invita a
interiorizar la Palabra que habíamos oído, por lo tanto durante
la temporada de la Cuaresma debe de ser aún poco más prolongada. Hasta ahora hemos discutido de lo que se trata la primera y la segunda lecturas al igual que el significado del salmo
responsorial; la formación y la preparación del Lector y de la comunidad. Ahora toquemos un poco de
la aclamación del evangelio. ¿Qué es una aclamación? Hay muchas definiciones del diccionario pero
la definición que queda más con aclamación litúrgica
es: un grito fuerte u otra demostración de bienvenida, benevolencia, o aprovación. Cuando cantamos la
aclamación del evangelio y la aclamación memorial,
estamos verdaderamente demostrando una bienvenida, una benevolencia, y aprobación de la Palabra de Dios y al
misterio de nuestra fe. Después de observar un silencio después
de la segunda lectura, la aclamación del evangelio rompe ese

we touched on the important observance of
silence after the first and second readings
and after the homily. We also said that silence is a way of an “active, conscious, and
full participation in the liturgy. It invites us to
interiorize the Word we have heard, thus its use during
the season of Lent should be a little bit longer. So far we
have discussed here what the first and second readings are
all about as well as the meaning of the responsorial
psalm; the formation and preparation of the Lector and
that of the community; Now let us touch a little
bit on the gospel acclamation. What is an acclamation? There are many definitions from the
dictionary but the definition that meets our liturgical acclamation is this: it is a loud shout or
other demonstration of welcome, goodwill, or
approval. When we sing the gospel acclamation
and the memorial acclamation we are indeed
demonstrating our welcome, goodwill and approval to the
Word of God and to the mystery of our faith. After observing some silence after the second reading, the gospel
acclamation breaks that silence. (to be continued…)
HOW LENT DEVELOPED:
1st Century - The first century Christians met weekly for
the Eucharist and baptism took place anytime. By the 2nd
century, Easter developed as a yearly practice and along
with it came the practice of fasting one or two days before
Easter. In the 3rd to 5th Centuries, Baptism began to be
celebrated on Easter Vigil. The 40 day Lenten practice developed because of the Catechumenate, (we call it RCIA
these days) a process of preparing adults for baptism. In
imitation of Jesus’ forty days desert retreat, the 40 day
Lenten practice is an intense period of preparation for the
Sacraments of Initiation that were celebrated on Easter.
Vigil.. The focus of the forty days (Lent) was baptismal
preparation. There was also a dramatic development of the
baptismal rituals: The Rite of Election of the Catechumens
marked the beginning of the forty days; other rites such as
the scrutinies developed as well.

Primer Siglo - Durante el primer siglo los cristianos se reunieron semanalmente para la Eucaristía, y el bautismo se efectuó a
cualquier momento. Hacia el Segundo siglo, la Pascua comenzó como práctica anual y junto con ella llegó la práctica del
ayuno uno o dos días antes de Pascua. Entre siglos tercero a
quinto, el Bautismo comenzó a celebrarse en la Vigilia de Pascua. La práctica de 40 días de Cuaresma se inició con el Catecumenado. (Hoy en día lo llamamos RCIA), un proceso de preparar a los adultos para el bautismo. Para imitar los 40 días en
que Jesús se retiró al desierto, la práctica de 40 días de Cuaresma era un período intenso de preparación para los sacramentos
de Iniciación que se celebraban en la Vigilia de Pascua. El enfoque de los 40 días (Cuaresma) era la preparación bautismal.
También existía un desarrollo dramático de los ritos bautismales: El Rito de Elección de los Catecúmenos marcaba el comienzo de los cuarenta días; otros ritos también se desarrollaron, tales como los escrutinios.

God heard the cry of His people in Egypt and
responded generously by bringing them out of
captivity. But in the desert the Israelites began
complaining to Moses. They were not grateful
for the gift of their freedom – a grateful
heart silences a complaining voice! We
good stewards pray that we will
always be grateful for the gifts and
opportunities that we are given.
When we are at times not grateful, when we are overcome
with an unhealthy lust for material things, power,
or prestige, we are called to repent, and we are
grateful for the Lord’s mercy.
