C OURSE O VERVIEW
HISP 0740 is intended to give you a basic but solid foundation for the study of peninsular
Spanish literature from the Middle Ages to the present. Reading chronologically
poetry, drama, prose, and narrative fiction, we will reflect on literary genres in their
given cultural/historical moments and examine how literature engages with the
formation of individual and collective identities. We will relate Spanish literature
with the broader movements of Western and World cultures, and highlight their
connections and exchanges. Beginning with canonical authors and ending with a
generation of contemporary writers, we will also consider questions of authorship,
audience, and the changing parameters of literature and genre over time.
G OALS AND P REREQUISITES
HISP 0740, conducted entirely in Spanish, is above all a course in literary
analysis. It aims to develop students´ written and oral expression, critical thinking
and writing skills, and serves as a preparatory prerequisite course for 1000-level
advanced courses in Hispanic Studies.
Prerequisites: HISP 0600; AP (Literature) score of 5; SAT II score of 750 or above; or
Brown placement score of 651 or above. As this course carries the WRIT (writing
intensive) designation, students should be prepared to craft analytical essays through
multiple drafts in workshops with their peers and in consultation with the professor.

and Ballesteros. SECOND EDITION. Boston: Heinle Cengage, 2014. Available at
the Brown Bookstore. Please note that if your purchase the first edition, you are
responsible for finding missing texts.

C REDIT H OURS
Over 14 weeks, students will spend 3 hours per week in class (42 hours total). Assigned
reading or audiovisual material watching for the seminar meetings is expected to
take up approximately 4,5 hours per week (63 hours). In addition, writing and
researching for a) three (3) essays OR b) two essays and the final exam is estimated
at total of approximately 70 hours over the course of the term. Finally, researching
and preparing for the final presentation is estimated at a total 4 hours during the
last three weeks of class (12 hours).
R EQUIREMENTS AND E VALUATION
20%: Preparation and Participation. In a seminar your active participation,
attentiveness, and attendance will contribute to the quality of our classroom
experience. Participating does not only mean looking alert, which is crucial, or
speaking often, but also means inviting others to say more about their thoughts
and helping to create a vivid conversation. Preparation for a class consists in an
attentive reading of both the literary and non-literary texts (historical, cultural, or
biographical contextualization), and being able to answer both the comprehension
or analysis questions. Although these questions will not be graded, you must sketch
short notes or paragraphs and bring them to the class in order to support your
interventions.
15%: Random quizzes. At the beginning of some classes you will answer a short quiz
that might reuse some comprehension questions, or a similar one. Responses will
be concrete and you would be able to answer them if you completed the reading
assignments.
30%: Two short papers. (In Spanish, between 800-1000 words.) During the course you
will write two short essays on a topic of your choice (check the section “Temas para
informes escritos” at each chapter for ideas). You are invited to advance an
original argument, and support your thesis throughout a close analysis of the texts
under study and trying to relate them to their sociocultural or historical contexts.
You will prepare a first draft that will be peer-edited at class (Taller de escritura)
and resubmitted in its final version.
15%: Final group presentation. As a creative finale of our regular gatherings, you
will prepare in groups an original presentation taking into account one or several
texts seen in the course. We will start the conformation of the teams and search of
the topic of study some weeks in advance.
20%: Final paper OR Take-home exam. At the end of the semester you will be
asked to synthesize the course materials either by writing a longer final paper (in
Spanish, 1500-1800 words) on a topic provided or of your election (involving
several texts from different time periods) or by completing a take-home exam with
identifications and short essays, of approximately the same length. More
information will be provided toward the end of the semester.

C OURSE P OLICIES
• Please bring the textbook to class to refer to text during discussions.
• Make sure to follow the syllabus and to check email regularly in case of
announcements.
• Class discussions and written work will all be carried out in Spanish. If you would
like to consult with me outside of class (via email, in office hours, etc.) you can do
so in Spanish or English, as you prefer.
• Attendance and timely arrival are essential. During the semester you are allowed 3
absences before your grade will be penalized; after that each absence will deduct
one percentage point from your final grade. These are not free classes, but should
rather be saved for use in event of illness, family emergencies, etc. Late arrivals not
only lead to your missing material but also disrupt the flow of class. Please make
every effort to be present and on time for all course meetings, barring unexpected
circumstances. If there is any circumstance that you know may affect your ability
to arrive on time (chronic illness, family responsibilities, lengthy commute, etc.)
please let me know
• Late work will not be accepted, except in extreme cases and with proper
documentation.
• All written work should follow MLA style for scholarly writing as outlined at:
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/11/ or in the MLA Handbook for
Writers of Research Papers.
• Proper citation of sources and any ideas not your own is fundamental. If you are
not certain how to attribute information or ideas, please feel free to come to office
hours and discus your work. Plagiarism is a very serious matter and not worth the
consequences. Any sources you use should be properly cited, both when quoting
directly as well as paraphrasing or summarizing sources. Please take the time to
