The Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it this way: “When the Lord comes at the end of time to judge the living and the dead, the glorious Christ will render to each man and woman according to their works, and according to their acceptance or refusal of grace.” (#682) The principal author of our U.S. Bishops Pastoral Letter on Stewardship (Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response) tried to explain stewardship and how it relates to judgment in this way: “Each of us has received a garden; that garden is the many gifts and graces we have received from God. At our final judgment, the Lord will only ask us one question: ‘What have you done with the garden I gave you?’ ” That is, of course, a simplified version of judgment, but it is an accurate measure of how we may be judged. We have received gifts, varied and different to be sure, but gifts nonetheless, from a beneficent God. What have we done with those gifts? Have we used them as Christ expects us — to further and build the Kingdom, to help those in need, and to show our love for others by sharing? That is the stewardship way. For a longer reflection or more info on stewardship please visit www.thecatholicsteward.com. OCTOBER 11, 2015 / 11 DE OCTUBRE, 2015 f r o m o u r pa sto r , fr. Jim Ries In the September 7, 2015 edition of the OC Catholic newspaper there was an article on cremation: http://occatholic.com/cremation-101/. It included the history of cremation and the acceptance of it by the Church in 1963 and reiterated in 1997. Many have heard that the Church now accepts it, but the full teaching has not been done well, especially about a proper burial. “Bodies cremated must be treated with respect and the remains be placed in a respectful vessel and receive a proper burial in consecrated ground and treated in the exact same manner than that of a body in a casket,” Michael Wesner, the Director of Catholic Cemeteries in Orange County says. MASS INTENTIONS/INTENCIONES SUNDAY 10/11 7am 9am 11am 1pm “Scattering ashes in the redwoods or at sea or keeping them on the mantle or buried in the back yard is not allowed by the Church. Scattering ashes would desecrate a body.” 5pm 7pm When the remains are in a cemetery it also allows others outside of the immediate family to visit the graveside and pray for the deceased. I markedly remember to visit the niche of Lisa Frost when I’m in that part of Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. Lisa Frost was on the second plane that crashed into the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. Investigators found parts of Lisa’s right femur, skin, right hip, and collarbone. These were cremated by the family and placed in a niche. I probably would not know about her or pray for her if she was not there. 8:30am When considering cremation, also consult with the local cemetery to find an appropriate place of burial for your cremains. 8:30am Thursday Night Confessions at 7pm: October 22 & 29 (front porch of church) God bless you all! Fr. We all have family and social obligations and the living we make helps us to meet those obligations. What Jesus warns us about is having a divided heart. The man in the gospel was faithful in keeping the commandments but he had a sense that there was more to following Jesus. Material wealth brings us the physical comforts of this world. Wealth also brings us privilege – access to better schools for our children; safer neighbors; influence over political affairs. It can also shield us from the suffering of others. Following Jesus always leads to the cross. Giving up everything means that we make all of our lives available to him and to one another. It means having an undivided heart. This is how we enter the kingdom of God. 1. What have I given up to follow Jesus? 2. What do I need to give up? Take a moment to revisit this Sunday’s readings [Wis 7:7-11; Heb 4:1213; Mk 10:17-30] or view them online at http://usccb.org/bible/readings/101115.cfm Renunciar a todo para seguir a Jesús no significa que, literalmente, vendemos todo lo que tenemos. ◆◆ ¿Qué he renunciado para seguir a Jesús? ◆◆ ¿A qué necesito aun renunciar? My umbilical cord carries about 300 quarts of fluid between me and my mom each day. That’s where I get my food from! Week 22 My lungs are getting stronger and more developed. My arms and legs are getting bigger and stronger, too, and sometimes my mom can feel them when I move. Week 23 50 years ago, if I were born at this age, I could not have survived. But today, with modern technology, babies born at this age have a fighting chance (about 50%) at survival. Week 24 I’m starting to put on weight faster - I’ve gained about half a pound in the last few weeks! That’s doubled my weight. Week 25 Thousands and thousands of brain cells are growing in my head every day! Soon I will have billions of brain cells!
