Miami Dade College admits two-millionth student
By Michael Vasquez [email protected] It's easy to find big, impressive-sounding
statistics about Miami-Dade College - with
more than 175,000 students, MDC is the largest
community college in the country.
But even in a school that big, admitting your two
millionth student is a milestone that stands out.
And that's who MDC says is taking classes this
fall semester, which began on Monday.
So who is MDC student number 2,000,000? It's
, Taty Rivera, a 2013 graduate of Coral Reef

Senior High School who one day plans to be a

pediatrician. Rivera got the news a few days
before starting classes at MDC's Kendall Miami Dade College has admitted its 2 millionth student: campus.
College President Eduardo Padron
Tatyana Rivera from the Class of2013 at Coral Reef personally phoned Rivera to congratulate her. Senior High School.
_ 11
Along with that phone call, Rivera received
vouchers good for $200 in textbooks at the college bookstore. When Rivera told her mom, she
said the response was "Oh my God, my little baby, you haven't even started the school and look at
you."
"She was excited, like everybody else," Rivera said.
Rivera had strong high school grades and test scores - she received MDC's full-tuition
American Dream scholarship - but the 18-year-old said she didn't bother applying to other
schools, even though they could potentially be interested. Rivera said her older brother attended
MDC and raved about it, and that recommendation (combined with the convenience of staying
close to home and enjoying mom's cooking) sealed the deal.
"Miami Dade was my first and only choice," Rivera said.
College officials said the 2,000,000 figure was tracked through the unique stUdent 10 numbers
that are issued during the admissions process . When Rivera was admitted in March,
administrators knew she was the one, but they decided to wait until she began classes to make
the big announcement.

Miami Dade College admits tv.o-millionth student - 08/27/20131 MiamiHerald.com
For MOC leaders, the DNo-miliion milestone was a moment to reflect on all the growth that has
taken place since the school opened its doors in 1960. By the mid-1960s, enrollment had
skyrocketed from an initial student body of 1 ,428 students to more than 15,000. From there,
MOC's local footprint would only further increase. The college admitted its one-millionth student in
1999.
Rene Garcia, MOC's director of enrollment management, said reaching 2,000,000 students is in
part due to the college simply being around for a long time. But Garcia said it also shows that the
public has embraced MOC's programs as a way to improve their lives.
"It speaks to not only the reach of the college, but also the realization on the part of the community
that economic mobility is driven by education," Garcia said.

Miami Author Edwidge Danticat: "Claire of

Edwidge Danticat's cousin was buried alive under his own
house.
Like so many other Haitian-Americans, the Miami author
lost family in the 2010 earthquake that by some estimates
killed more than 300,000 people in and around Port-au
Prince.
"At some point, his body was moved to the family
mausoleum, but his son was lost in the rubble and was never
recovered," she remembers. "It's always a part of visiting
Haiti, a visit to the living and to the dead."
Released this week, Claire of the Sea Light is Danticat's first
book-length work ofliterary fiction since The Dew Breaker
in 2004. Since then, she has received her second National
Book Award nomination, for her memoir Brother, I'm Dying,
and a MacArthur "Genius" grant. Also, on her most recent
visit to Haiti, she was given a bag crocheted by the wife of
her late cousin.

children, and after that," Danticat says, "she felt like she was
going mad and started making these bags to cope. Sometimes, what you come away with from Haiti is so intangible, so from this last visit, I'm so happy to have this bag." Mitchell Kaplan, cofounder of Miami Book Fair International and owner of Books & Books, says the Oprah-anointed Danticat is "increasingly being recognized as one of our most important writers. The new novel is really powerful and will continue that trajectory." In Claire of the Sea Light, a body washes up on the shore of a Haitian fishing village. All of the
witnesses seem to be connected to each other in surprising ways that are by turns terrifying,
scandalous, and life-affirming. Overlapping narratives detail the lives ofthese characters over a
quarter-century spanning roughly the period of Haitian history between the uprising against Jean

DAILY Moviecity backs Encuentros
26 August, 2013
I By Jeremy Kay
EXCLUSNE: Latin American pay-TV network Moviecity has signed on as presenting sponsor of the 11th edition of Miami
International Film Festival (MIFF)'s post-production development programme.
Moviecity will provide a $35,000 grand prize and an exclusive four-year pay-TV deal with the winner selected by a jury for Latin America and Caribbean territories (excluding Brazil). Miami Encuentros will run during the festival's Mar 7-16 2014 dates and will provide a $35,000 grand prize.
"We are very happy to be working with Moviecity to give some of the year's top-quality projects a platform and
opportunity for a significant and substantial pre-sale, to successfully position their films for maximum success," said MIFF
executive director Jaie Laplante. "MIFF continues our commitment to support the filmmakers who will be providing us
with the great art of tomorrow."
"At Moviecity, we are committed to the Latin American film industry by encouraging and fostering productions and filmmakers from across the region to continue producing and investing in local cinema," said president and CEO Edgar Spielmann. MIFF's 2013 Encuentros winner All About The Feathers (Por Las Plumas) (pictured) by Costa Rican first-time director
Neto Villalobos, received $10,000 in completion funds and gets its world premiere in Toronto next month. Urban
Distribution International represents world rights.
Five projects will be selected to take part in Miami Encuentros 2014 and will be announced in late February. The
programme is open to features produced partially or entirely by Latin-American-based production companies or from US
Hispanic filmmakers, that are currently in post-production and will not be completed by March 2014.
Projects must between 60 and 120 minutes in Spanish and have at a minimum temporary subtitles in English for the
Encuentros screening or, in the case of US Hispanic films that are in English, have at a minimum temporary subtitles in
Spanish for the Encuentros screening.
Brazilian and Portuguese films in Portuguese are eligible to compete if the producers commit to covering the cost of
subtitling the film in Spanish for final delivery to Moviecity should they be awarded the grand prize. They must also
provide a dialogue list for electronic subtitling to MIFF in addition to having at a minimum temporary subtitles in English
for the Encuentros screening.
Projects must be submitted by Jan 10, 2014.

Scene from All About the Feathers (Por las plumas)
All About the Feathers is about Chalo, a lone security guard struggling to find his first gamecock (a rooster
trained for cockfights). His job in an abandoned factory is boring and monotonous but it doesn't seem to
bother him that his life is like that as well. Once he manages to get his longed for rooster, which he names
Rocky, a chain of funny situations ensues, testing Chalo 's passion and love for his new (and only) friend.
FollOwing its world premiere in Toronto, All About the Feathers will vie for the Kutxa-New Directors Award at
San Sebastian Film Festival with 16 first or second directors from Spain, the US, Israel, France, Turkey,
Lithuania, Costa Rica, Greece, Mexico, China, Iceland, Ukraine, Holland and Belgium.

NOli· ' AdChoices [l> class on Thursday June 20th at Castle Hill and give a poetry reading that same night, onJune 20th at 7:30pm at the Wellfleet Congregational Church, Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
The Gale Fund , the Gay and Lesbian Equity Fund, has granted The Truro Center for the Arts mJney to fund two scholarships for local students to attend Richard Blanco's Master Class on June 20th. The Gale Fund was established at the Cape Cod Foundation in 1998 with funding from the National Lesbian & Gay comrrunity Funding Partnership and matching contributions from local businesses and Individuals. Richard Blanco was made in Cuba, assembled in Spain, and imported to the United States-meaning his mJther, seven mJnths pregnant, and the rest of the family arrived as exiles from Cuba to Madrid where he was born. Only forty-five days later, the family emigrated once mJre and settled in New York City, then eventually in Miami where he was raised and educated. His acclaimed first book of poetry, City of a Hundred Fires, explores the yearnings and negotiation of cultural identity as a Cuban-American, and received the Agnes Starrett Poetry Prize from the University of Pittsburgh Press. His second book, Directions to The Beach of the Dead, won the Beyond Margins Award from the PEN American Center for its continued exploration of the universal themes of cultural identity and homecoming . A third collection, Looking for The Gulf Motel, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 2012, His poems have appeared in top literary journals including, The Nation, the New Republic, Ploughshares, Michigan Quarterly Rev iew, and Tri Quarterly Rev iew; and several anthologies inc Iud ing, The Best American Poetry, Great American Prose Poems, Bread loaf Anthology of New American Poets, and American Poetry: The Next Generation. He has been featured on National Public Radio's All Things ConSidered, and various conferences and venues including the Miami Book Fair, The Southern Writers Conference, The Sunken Garden Poetry Festival, the Dodge Poetry Festival, and The Poetry Center at Smith College. Acclaimed poet Rigobeno Gonzalez describes Blanco's poetry : ''The poems in Looking for The Gulf Motel are bittersweet songs that ache with the 'sweet and slow honey of a bolero.' They croon about journey s from Cuba and Spain to Florida and Maine ; mJurn languages, lovers , and names that were or could have been; and praise the forgotten pop culture icons that expanded one young person's view of his nationality and manhood, If all loss is like exile, Blanco tells us, then searching for love (in the self, in others) is healing, is finding home, because 'love is thicker than any country .'" -Rigoberto Gonzalez
Richard Blanco is the recipient of two Florida Anist Fellowships, a Residency Fellowship from the Virginia Center for the Creative Ans, and is a John Ciardi Fellow of the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. A builder of cities as well as poems, he holds a Bachelor in Science Degree in Civil Engineering and a Master in Fine Arts in Creative Writing . Truro Center for the Ans at Castle Hill is a vibrant year-round creative comrrunity founded by anist Joyce Johnson in 1971 and directed by anist Cherie Mittenthal The an center offers workshops in all anistic mediums, hosts art exhibitions, lectures , WNN.capecodtoday.com'e\€nVpoetry-reading-richard-blanco

Westminster is on a mission
By Andre C. Fernandez a 1fe rnand ez@Miami Hera Id .co m Westminster Christian's volleyball coaches
playfully joked about canceling Senior Night this
season.
Warriors coach Julie Doan just doesn't want to
say good-bye to one of their most talented
classes in school history.

· R
Westminster Christian volleyball coach Julie Doan instructs her players at practice on Monday August 26 , _
"We don't want them to leave," Doan said .
"They've such an awesome group to coach on
and off the court. A lot of them have had family
members graduate from Westminster. They're
like family."
Westminster Christian's "core four" of outside
hitters Sylvia Hernandez, Jenny Ceballos, libero
Susie Forbes and setter Kelsey Taylor has led the Warriors to the Class 3A state final four in
consecutive seasons.
2013.
They want their last season together to end with a state championship, something that has eluded
the quartet each time.
"They definitely haven't forgotten the bitterness of losing ," Doan said. "We're not always the tallest
team at state, but we try to make up with it with speed and our skill. That's what we're trying to
focus on this season and bring it home."
Hernandez, a 5-11, two-time Miami Herald Player of the Year, Gatorade Player of the Year nominee, and University of Miami signee, is one of the top-rated players in the country. "Aside from her skill, Sylvia just has a switch she turns on when her teams needs it the most in a
tough match," Doan said.
Ceballos, a 5-11 Rollins University commitment, complements her on the court with her versatility.
Taylor, a 5-6 three-year starter at setter, is committed to Miami-Dade College and one of the best
in South Florida at her position.
Forbes, a 5-7 libero and Palm Beach Atlantic University commit, is one of the best defensive players in the state. IMMN. miami herald.com'2013108/27/v- pri nV3587975/v.€s tmi nster - is-on-a- mi ssi on.html
