On a granite hill, Trujillo, appears to be a fortress rather than a city. Although it was important in the Middle Ages as is shown by its castle and its wall, it entered fully into the Renaissance hand in hand with the conquistadores who made its name universal and left their mark on the stones of its streets. Since 1984 the Parador of Trujillo is located in what was the Franciscan convent of Santa Clara founded in 1533 in the lower part of the city. The primitive convent was a simply squared designed building organised around a patio-cloister which connected with a church, the parish of San Clemente, which was subsequently annexed in the XVII century. This explains the Gothic style of the church which is quite some time previous to the foundation of the convent. Therefore, the church is the oldest and most valuable part of the complex and was composed of a single nave, polygonal apse with a starred, ribbed vault and both the upper and lower with choirs, where a dining room is now situated. Given the reduced space and the requirement to cover the necessities of the Parador, it was decided to build a new building with bedrooms attached to the Renaissance cloister. In order to ensure symmetry and architectonic and stylistic unity, a new modern style patio was resorted to so that one of its sides served as access and communication with the old building. This new building was constructed in the former orchard, taking advantage of the inclination of the land in order to guarantee light and respect the original profile of the complex. FRANCISCO PIZARRO, CONQUISTADOR OF PERU The conquistador of Peru was born in Trujillo probably in 1476. He left his land with no name or fortune made by himself and returned in 1528 transformed into a rich man. The people of Trujillo gave him a triumphal reception and he enhanced his city with the splendid Renaissance palaces we now admire. Trujillo commemorates him with the important equestrian statue which presides the main square. Pizarro arrived in America in 1502 and, from the beginning, his ambition was to have a grand adventure of discovery. His opportunity arrived in 1524 when, after his alliance with Diego de Almagro, he set out on an expedition to the unknown lands of the southern continent. The journey and progress were very slow and difficult and scarcely thirteen men followed him but he managed to subdue the Inca Empire and incorporated enormous, new territory for Spain. In 1535 he founded Lima and Trujillo, which he baptised with the name of his birthplace. Success lasted for a short time as a civil war broke out between the two conquistadores which, in the end cost the lives of both. Almagro was executed in 1538 and his supporters took revenge by killing Pizarro in 1541 by stabbing him in the neck. THE RENAISSANCE CLOISTER The most singular place of the Parador is its original cloister. Besides maintaining its beautiful Renaissance design, it reminds the traveller of the monastic past of the building and contributes to serenity and contemplation with its well and fruit trees. Although it is hardly noticeable, only three of its sides are from the Renaissance as the northern stretch is anterior, from the XV century and is slightly lower. The design of the cloister is also unequal as the lower cloister is a series of broad semicircular arches while the upper cloister is a gallery with flat arches. The harmony of style is achieved with the Tuscan style columns. TAMBIÉN LE GUSTARÁ: YOU WILL ALSO LIKE THE FOLLOWING: Ruta a pie por Trujillo. Walking route through Trujillo Cáceres. Cáceres Mérida.
