get the very best out of your visit to the city and

PRIMER DÍA
DAY ONE
¿Ya dejaste tus maletas en el hotel?
Antes de salir, descárgate la aplicación móvil “Gijón en el
bolsillo” y tendrás toda la info para hacer tu primera visita
autoguiada por el casco antiguo y barrio de pescadores,
Cimavilla, y acercarte a dar un paseo por el Puerto
Deportivo.
Aprovecha y visita nuestra oficina de Información
turística, coge tu plano, resuelve tus dudas y compra
los productos que más te interesan para sacarle todo el
partido a la ciudad.
Las fuerzas empiezan a flojear, seguro que te has traído
tu bañador, y estás deseando zambullirte en las piscinas
de Talasoponiente. Desde su piscina exterior verás el
atardecer gijonés.
Después de esta sesión de relax, ya es hora de cenar y que
mejor que en una sidrería para regar con la bebida patria,
la sidra, deliciosos platos del mar y de la huerta.
Pero el día en Gijón no tiene porque acabar aquí, la oferta
nocturna es lo suficientemente amplia como para que
encuentres el estilo que más te gusta.

Head into the old part of town, visit the former fisher quarter
Cimavilla, and enjoy a pleasant stroll along the Marina.

If your energy is flagging, grab your swimsuit and immerse
yourself in the Talasoponiente baths. Watch the sun gently

mouth-watering seafood dishes and regional vegetables. But
why stop there? Your evening is just about to get started; the
varied Gijon nightlife is sure to suit all tastes and styles.

DAY TWO
Un buen desayuno en el hotel para empezar el día y
después nos acercamos a una de las paradas del bus
turístico. Una forma de recorrer la ciudad y descubrir sus
principales recursos desde el bus rojo de doble piso. Si lo
tuyo es el fútbol, bájate en El Molinón y haz una visita
guiada al campo de fútbol más antiguo de España. Si
eres un amante de la naturaleza, continúa hasta el Jardín
Botánico Atlántico, una joya verde a escasos minutos
de la ciudad. Si prefieres historia, te quedarás con la
boca abierta ante la monumentalidad de la Universidad
Laboral de Gijón. Y para acercarte a los usos y costumbres
del pueblo asturiano, que mejor que visitar el Muséu del
Pueblu d’Asturies y el Museo de la Gaita.
After a hearty breakfast in your hotel you are ready to start
the day. Head over to one of the visitor bus stops and hop
aboard a red double-decker for an enjoyable way to see the
city sights and discover the main tourist attractions. If you
are football fan, get off at the Molinón stadium and enjoy
a guided tour of the oldest football grounds in Spain. For
all green-fingered visitors, a trip to the Atlantic Botanical
Gardens is a must; an emerald paradise just minutes from
the city. If history is your bag, the monumental Universidad
Laboral of Gijon will leave you open mouthed. And what
better way to appreciate the traditional Asturian customs
than to visit the Pueblu d’Asturies Museum and the
Bagpipe Museum.

TERCER DÍA
Un paseo diferente para empezar el día, desayuno en
ruta con Gijón Goloso para conocer las especialidades
más dulces de las confiterías gijonesas. Un mantecado de
manzana o las clásicas princesitas conseguirán que inicies
tu última jornada con más energía.
Si no eres de los que se llevan sus zapatillas para hacer tu
sesión de running por los diferentes circuitos que ofrece
Gijón, quizás te apetezca aprovechar cualquiera de las
sendas verdes de la ciudad para caminar un poco o coger
una bici y dar una vuelta por cualquiera de los 66 km. de
carriles bici de la ciudad.
Es la hora de descansar. Sin darte cuenta, has dejado la
ciudad y te encuentras en plena zona rural. Con buen
tiempo, sin duda, la mejor opción para comer es un
“merendero” , al aire libre, disfrutando del paraíso
natural a escasos minutos de la urbe.

los Llagares de la zona para conocer de primera mano
el proceso de elaboración de la sidra. Por cierto, ¿ya

Start your day in style with breakfast on route with Sweettoothed Gijon, and taste the sweetest Gijon specialities. Try

If you can’t be tempted by the numerous running routes
in Gijon, you may be convinced by one of the many green
routes the city has to offer. Go for a walk or rent a bike and
take a ride along any of the 66 km of the city cycle lanes.
It’s time to unwind. Without even realising, you have left
the city behind you and are immersed in the surrounding
countryside. Weather permitting, an al fresco picnic is the

Gijón dispone de una amplia red de museos así
como numerosos lugares de interés, a través
de los cuales se pueden recorrer más de dos
mil quinientos años de historia. El pasado más
remoto y el presente más inmediato están en
ellos.
Gijón has an extensive network of museums as
well as numerous places of interest via which it
is possible to journey through over twenty-five
hundred years of history. They house both the
remotest past and the most recent present.
Un paseo por los museos
de Bellas Artes de Gijón
Los amantes de la pintura y la escultura del siglo XX
encontrarán en la Fundación Museo Evaristo Valle y el
Museo Nicanor Piñole, a los dos más representativos
pintores asturianos de las escuelas regionalistas del siglo
XX, en el Museo Barjola a un extremeño que encontró
su hueco en Gijón, y en la Casa Natal de Jovellanos, la
colección artística de la ciudad. Son los Museos de Bellas
Artes de la ciudad, una cita que a la que no debes faltar en
tu visita a Gijón.
MUSEO CASA NATAL DE JOVELLANOS
El museo se ubica en la casa natal del ilustre Gaspar
Melchor de Jovellanos (JKØO 1VFSUP EF 7FHB
Navia, 1811), situada en el límite meridional del barrio de
$JNBWJMMBJOUSBNVSPTEFMBDJVEBEFMBSPNBOPNFEJFWBM&T
uno de los edificios señoriales más antiguo de la ciudad,
cuya historia corre paralela al relevante papel de Gijón
durante la Edad Media.
El Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos abrió sus puertas
al público el 6 de agosto de 1971, con la colección
artística municipal, hasta entonces expuesta en la

principal, coincidiendo aproximadamente con la zona que
ocupó Jovellanos como mayorazgo, se exponen piezas
relacionadas con su vida, parte del mobiliario original de
la casa y obras pictóricas de su colección; así como una
selección de pinturas procedentes del legado LledóSuárez, cuyos estilos, escuelas y géneros están vinculadas
a algunas de las obras que formaron parte de su colección
particular.
En el resto de las salas se presenta una amplia selección
de arte asturiano de los siglos XIX y XX, con obras

y de la producción pictórica de Evaristo Valle y Nicanor
Piñole, así como de los autores asturianos que a partir

Museums
Art enthusiasts will find the city’s art collection in the
Jovellanos Birthplace Museum, while lovers of 20thcentury painting and sculpture will discover works by the
two most representative Asturian painters of the regionalist
school in the Nicanor Piñole Museum and the Evaristo
Valle Foundation Museum, as well as those in the Barjola
Museum by a native of Extremadura who came to find his
niche in Gijón. These comprise the list of the city’s Fine Arts
Museums, a must on your visit to Gijón.
THE JOVELLANOS BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM.
The museum is located in the birthplace of the illustrious
Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (Gijón, 1744-Puerto de Vega,
Navia, 1811), situated on the southern limit of the district of
Cimavilla, within the walls of the Romanmedieval citadel.
It is one of the city’s oldest stately buildings, whose history
runs parallel to the important role played by Gijón during the
Middle Ages.
The Jovellanos Birthplace Museum opened its doors to the
public on 6th August 1971 to exhibit the municipal art
collection, until then on display on the ground floor of the
former “Instituto Jovellanos”. Coinciding roughly with the
área occupied by Jovellanos as his inheritance as eldest son,
the main floor houses exhibits related to his life, part of the
original furnishings and paintings that belonged to his own
collection. There is also a selection of paintings from the
Lledó-Suárez bequest, whose styles, schools and genres are
linked to some of the works that comprise the house’s own
collection.
The remaining rooms contain a broad selection of 19thand 20th-century Asturian art, with excellent works
belonging to the regionalist school of the late 19th century
and paintings by Evaristo Valle and Nicanor Piñole,
as well as those of Asturian artists with links to mid-20th
century trends in artistic renewal. Sculpture also occupies
an important place in the exhibition in the form of Sebastián

de la figura del ilustrado y de la creación artística de

of monographs, magazines, newspaper and periodicals
archives, pamphlets, photographs and documents of a
diverse nature that make the centre a place of reference
regarding not only the figure of the Enlightenment scholar
and statesman, but also artistic creation of a local and
regional scope.

El museo está ubicado en el antiguo Asilo Pola,
proyectado a principios del siglo XX por Luis Bellido y
construido bajo la dirección de Miguel García de la Cruz.
This museum, located in the former Pola Asylum, was
designed at the beginning of the 20th century by Luis Bellido
and built under the supervision of Miguel García de la Cruz.

histórico, social, económico y cultural del artista Nicanor
Piñole (Gijón, 1878-1978).

social, economic and cultural environment of the artist,

de cuatro mil obras que recogen de forma exhaustiva

The museum also contains a series of personal objects linked
to Nicanor Piñole, from both before and after the Spanish
Civil War. These comprise objects related to his artistic
activities, such as a number of sculptures, a form he pursued
occasionally, his palette and box of brushes, and catalogues
of some of the exhibitions in which he took part. There are
also some interesting photographs that illustrate daily
aspects of his life and the settings where this took place.

El museo recoge la obra que el artista Evaristo Valle
(Gijón, 1873-1951) conservó hasta su muerte: desde
sus primeras pinturas realizadas en París a partir de 1903,
retratos de familiares, carnavaladas, delicados temas
rurales de madurez, a pinturas de sus últimos años en las
que se muestran arquetipos de personajes variopintos.
This museum houses the work that the artist Evaristo Valle
(Gijón, 1873- 1951) conserved until his death, ranging from
his first paintings done in Paris from 1903 onwards, portraits
of relatives, carnival scenes and delicate country themes from
his period as a mature artist through to a series of paintings
from his final years depicting a variety of archetypal

The building conserves the front façade and the constructive
structure and elements of the chapel, with the emainder
having been rebuilt to fulfil the requirements of a museum.
The three upper floors of the museum house the Permanent
Collection. This comprises the work of Juan Barjola,
hose evolution as a painter can be seen through the
most representative thematic series of his work from the
1950s until his death. These display his search for his own
artistic language, evolving from abstract art through to
xpressionism.

At 1.5 km long and with its 3 km of bustling walkway along the
seafront, this is perhaps the most traditional and frequented
beach in Asturias. The San Pedro church majestically oversees
what has come to represent a clear favourite among beachgoers, regardless of the season. In the 19th century when sea
swimming grew in popularity, various spas took advantage
of this privileged location to set up shop. Nowadays, the
beach maintains its prestige as a place to meet, to relax, and
as the hub of the city life. It is considered to be one of the best
city beaches for surfing, for beginners and pros alike.

Esta playa, situada junto al Puerto Deportivo, se encuentra
muy abrigada del Nordés ( o vientos del nordeste). Por

oficial a Asturias, se tomó aquí los saludables “baños
de ola” prescritos por sus médicos. También llamada
Playa de Pando, Arenal de Natahoyo o el ‘playón’, por
sus dimensiones, fue recuperada en la década de los 90.
Cuenta con un extenso arenal estable tanto en pleamar
como en bajamar. Sus aguas, con permanente bandera
verde, son ideales para la iniciación en deportes acuáticos
y para el baño de los niños. Además, es totalmente
accesible a personas con dificultades de movilidad.
This beach, located next to the Marina, is sheltered from
north-easterly winds. This is where Queen Isabel II, making
the most of her official visit to Asturias in 1858, enjoyed her
doctor-prescribed “sea-bathe”. Also known as the Pando
Beach, the Natahoyo Sands and the “playón” (big beach) due
to its size, it was regenerated in the 1990s. With its vast stretch
of sandy shoreline, it is stable in both high and low tides. The
green flag is a permanent feature on this beach, signalling
safe waters which are ideal for children and those learning
water sports. The beach is completely accessible for people
with reduced mobility.

PLAYA DE L’ARBEYAL:
Es la gran playa del oeste de la ciudad, ubicada entre
los populares barrios de El Natahoyo y La Calzada.. En
1995, se reabrió al baño tras una importante actuación
regenerativa, ya que había estado durante años en
desuso debido a su cercanía al Puerto de El Musel. En la
actualidad, es un arenal dorado estable, de unos 500
metros y bañado por aguas tranquilas. Tiene una afluencia
alta y muy buenos servicios. Escenario de muchos eventos
deportivos, en ella se practica de forma habitual vóley
playa o deportes náuticos como el kayak de mar.

L’ARBEYAL BEACH:
This is the large beach to the west of the city, sandwiched
between the popular neighbourhoods of El Natahoyo and
La Calzada. Following major regeneration in 1995, the beach
was reopened to bathers following years of disuse due to
its proximity to the El Musel Port. Now the golden sands are
stable, measuring some 500 metres, and bathers are invited
to take a dip in the calm waters. It receives many visitors and
offers excellent services. It is home to many sporting events,
in particular beach volley and water sports such as sea
kayaking.

La playa de los Mayanes se halla al final del paseo de la
playa de San Lorenzo, por su margen derecha, en el Paseo
de Rosario Acuña. Prolongación de la principal playa de la
ciudad, está formada por rocas y cantos y con un arenal
extenso, variable según mareas.
The Mayanes Beach is located at the end of the San Lorenzo
Beach on the right hand side, on the Rosario Acuña Walkway.
An extension of the main city beach, it is formed of rocks and
pebbles with a vast sandy beach area, depending on the tide.

La playa de Cervigón, o el Rinconín, es, como su nombre
indica, la esquina este de San Lorenzo, una pequeña cala
de arena y rocas situada al final del paseo marítimo, justo
delante del Parque de El Rinconín. Tiene una longitud de
unos 400 metros y la extensión de su arenal varía según
las mareas. Se recomienda el baño con precaución debido
a su fondo rocoso, perfecto para hacer snorkel o pesca

una ruta de 9,3 kilómetros apta para el senderismo y el
cicloturismo.
The Cervigón Beach, or the “Rinconín” (little corner), is, as its
name suggests, the eastern corner of the San Lorenzo Beach.
This little cove of sand and rocks is located at the end of the
seaside promenade, just in front of El Rinconín Park. It is
around 400 metres long, the beach width varying with the
tide. Bathing is recommended with extreme caution due to
the rocky sea bed, ideal for snorkelling or underwater fishing.
The beach is the starting point for the El Rinconín-La Ñora
greenway, a 9.3 kilometre route suitable for hiking and cycletouring.

Cerrados los accesos a la playa ante el grave riesgo de
desprendimientos que existe tras producirse un argayo
en la zona. Se reabrirán una vez realizados los trabajos de
mantenimiento necesarios.
Es la primera de las playas rurales que hay en la zona
este de Gijón. Se accede a ella por la carretera de La
1SPWJEFODJB P TJHVJFOEP MB TFOEB MJUPSBM &M 3JODPOÓO-B
Ñora. Con una longitud de 500 metros aproximadamente,
es una estrecha franja de grava y arena, rodeada de altos
acantilados que encierran una importante riqueza fósil.
La afluencia a esta playa es variable, y es frecuentada por
OVEJTUBTOBUVSJTUBT 4F BDPOTFKB FM CB×P DPO QSFDBVDJØO
más recomendado en el margen derecho de la playa. Es
una playa perfecta para la práctica de deportes acuáticos
como la pesca submarina, el buceo o el surf.
Access to the beach is closed due to the serious risk of falling
rock following a landslide in the area. It will be reopened
when the necessary maintenance work has been undertaken.
This is the first of the rural beaches to the east of Gijon. It can
be accessed via the La Providencia road or by following the
coastal path El Rinconín-La Ñora. Its 500 metres constitute
a narrow strip of gravel and sand, overlooked by tall cliffs
which are a rich source of fossils. Visitor numbers are variable,
and it is a favourite spot for nudists-naturists. Bathing is
recommended with extreme caution, the right hand side of
the beach constituting the safer section. It is a perfect location
for water sports such as underwater fishing, diving or surfing.

Esta estilizada playa, de unos 350 metros de longitud, está
enclavada entre acantilados y abierta al Mar Cantábrico.
Como su acceso es peatonal, y con bastante pendiente,
la afluencia es escasa a lo largo del todo el año, lo que

naturistas y un lugar perfecto para alejarse de la zona
urbana. Se accede a ella por la carretera de La Providencia,
tras pasar el cruce que lleva a la ermita, cogiendo un
camino rural que sale a la izquierda hacia un aparcamiento
habilitado para la senda litoral. Desde esta senda, se puede
coger la bajada a la playa.
This narrow beach, 350m long, is nestled between the
cliff face and the waves of the Cantabrian Sea. Due to its
pedestrian-only access via a steep climb, the beach does
not receive many visitors throughout the year. This makes it
a favourite among nudists-naturists, and an ideal spot for
disconnecting from the city. It can be accessed via the La
Providencia road: after passing a junction that leads to the
chapel, take the country road that veers left towards a car
park designed for the coastal path. From this path, there is a
route down to the beach.

La Cagonera es un pequeño arenal que en su día se
utilizaba como refugio de barcas y pescadores. El acceso

recomienda acceder a ella mediante embarcación.

and fishers. Access is particularly tricky as it has not been

ESTAÑO BEACH:
Más allá de La Providencia, está señalizado el desvío a la
playa de Estaño. Pequeña, de arena oscura y en atractiva
forma de tómbolo, tiene una longitud aproximada de 200
metros. Es muy reconocible por la peña que tiene en el
centro de la playa y que la divide en dos orillas, la de la
izquierda más aconsejable para el baño. Destaca en Estaño
el Pozo del Cura, una piscina natural labrada en la roca.
Further along from La Providencia, a turn-off is signposted
to the Estaño beach. This small yet attractive, dark-sanded
bay is shaped like a tombolo, measuring approximately
200 metres in length. It is recognisable for its rock in the
centre of the beach which divides the two shores. The left is
recommended for bathing. The Pozo del Cura (Priest’s Well) is
a highlight of the Estaño beach.

Situada en la zona este de Gijón, en la desembocadura del
arroyo de La Ñora, que divide la playa entre los concejos
de Gijón y Villaviciosa. El acceso se puede realizar tanto de
forma rodada como peatonal aprovechando los senderos
que llegan a ella. Con un maravilloso arenal de color
tostado, cuenta con servicios de salvamento e higiénicos.
En ella se pueden practicar actividades naúticas y otras
actividades como el rappel o la escalada de acantilados.
Como principal atractivo, destaca su paseo, que sube
hasta un mirador sobre el acantilado.
Located to the east of Gijon where La Ñora river meets the
sea, the beach is divided between the districts of Gijon and
Villaviciosa. It can be accessed by car or on foot via the
various routes that lead to its shores. With its fabulous deep
golden sands, it has lifeguard services and other washroom
facilities. Perfect for water sports, it also offers abseiling and
cliff-climbing. Its main attraction is its walkway, which climbs
to a viewing point at the top of the cliff.

‘Gijón, Asturias con sal’. El lema que se eligió
para definir la ciudad de Jovellanos no fue
fruto de la casualidad y este condimento y la
ciudad parece que siempre han ido de la mano:
sal de la alegría de vivir, sal de su gente, sal de
salar cualquier anécdota diaria y, como no, sal
que adereza una oferta gastronómica cuya
diversidad la hace referente dentro de Asturias
y que se suma a la tradicional fabada, al pote
asturiano, a los cachopos o a los innumerables
quesos que ofrece el Principado
“Gijón, Northern Spain with Zest”. The theme
chosen to define the home town of Jovellanos
was not coincidental and this ‘condiment’ and the
city seem to have always gone hand in hand: the
zest for life, the zest that the locals possess and,
naturally, the zest of its cuisine whose diversity
makes it a reference point in Asturias, alongside
the traditional fabada (bean and pork meats
stew), pote Asturiano (bean, potato, greens and
pork meats stew), cachopos (veal cordon bleu)
and the countless cheeses the Principality has to
offer.

son los reyes del horno y de los platos ‘de mesa’: pixín
(rape), besugo, chopa (sargo)… Aunque algunos, como
la merluza o el propio pixín, también pueden encontrarse
(young Atlantic horse mackerel), bocartinos (young
anchovies), parrochines (young sardines) or panchinos
(young sea bream) are some of the most common species
usually enjoyed accompanied by a few bottles of cider in the
many cider taverns that dot the city.
These fish are often eaten as ‘tapas’, while others are the kings
of the oven and of ‘table’ dishes, such as pixín (monkfish),
besugo (sea bream) and chopa (black bream). Although

Siguiendo en la familia, llegamos a un plato
inequívocamente gijonés: el pulpín con patatines, un

tiñosu (red scorpionfish) and golondru (tub gurnard), are
the basis of two casserole specialties cooked with potatoes.
Garlic, onion, olive oil, parsley, paprika, white wine and little
else is used to season fish whose flavour stands out on its
own. Rock dwellers also are the splendid salmonetes (striped
red mullet) which are caught in the area, although these are
only prepared in the most logical way: fried or griddled.
Other fish dishes to have come out of Gijón’s kitchens are
monkfish with lobster, conger eel with peas, splendid
alfonsino in sea urchin sauce, black bream in cider sauce,
seafood stuffed megrim and, in the summer, bonito belly.
Calamares de potera, i.e. squid caught with just a hook and
line in the most artisanal way possible, are also typical in the
summer. They are squid in their reduced version, as soft as
butter to the senses and are usually fried in strips and rings.
You can also find chipirones afogaos, literally “drowned”
squid due to being cooked with the lid on, a delicious and
tender way of braising them without their ink that is very
typical in Gijon.
Staying in the same family, we come to a dish that is
unequivocally from Gijón: pulpín con patatines, a slowsimmered stew that brings out all the succulence of small,
rocky-shore octopus accompanied by diced potatoes. Some

bugres (bogavantes), percebes, almejas, quisquillas,
andaricas (nécoras), cigalas, centollos o ñoclas (bueyes
de mar) hacen la boca agua y corren por cetáreas,
pescaderías, mostradores, barras y mesas. Pero hay dos
mariscos que, por encima de todos, se identifican con la
ciudad de Jovellanos por su sabor y su popularidad: les
llámpares (lapas) y, sobre todo, los oricios (erizos de mar).
Estos últimos constituyen uno de los mayores placeres
gastronómicos que brinda el mar y en Gijón se venden a
paladas y se les rinde pleitesía: solos, en guisos, con arroz...
Fruto de esa pasión colectiva queda el honor de haber sido
el primer lugar donde se envasaron como conserva y de
dejar una receta autóctona bajo forma de pastel de oricios.
Resta aún el capítulo repostero, donde reinan la charlota y
la tarta gijonesa y los frixuelos, las casadielles o el arroz
con leche.

Other no less tasty variants of this dish are pulpu con berces
(octopus with cabbage) and pulpu amariscao (octopus
done in a seafood sauce).
Like the rest of the Asturian coast, Gijón has long been a
shellfish stronghold: clawed and spiny lobsters, gooseneck
barnacles, clams, shrimp, velvet swimming crabs,
crayfish, spider and brown crabs make your mouth water
and abound in stock tanks, fishmongers, counters, bars and
tables. However, there are two shellfish especially identified
with the town of Jovellanos for their taste and popularity:
llámpares (limpets) and, above all, oricios (sea urchins). The
latter constitute one of the greatest gastronomic pleasures
offered by the sea and used to be sold by the shovelful in
Gijón, where they are paid due tribute: alone, in stews, with
rice, and so on. The result of this collective passion is the
honour of Gijón being the first place where they were canned
and of creating a local recipe in the form of sea urchin roe
loaf.
Last, but not least, is the pastry offering, where the cakes
called Charlota and Tarta Gijonesa reign alongside
frixuelos (crepes), casadielles (walnut-filled pastries) and
arroz con leche (rice pudding).

Para la gente de Gijón, la sidra es más que una bebida.
En Gijón, la sidra se bebe y se vive. Introducirse
en sus ritos es simple, pero requiere un cierto
aprendizaje. Si quiere comportarse como una persona
experta, sólo tiene que conocer un vocabulario básico
y seguir unos pasos muy sencillos.
For Gijoners, cider is more than a drink. In Gijón, cider is
drunk and lived. To be introduced to its rituals
is easy, but it does need certain study. If you want to act
like an expert, you just have to know a little
basic vocabulary and follow some very simple steps.
En Asturias no se sale “de sidras”, sino a tomar una botellina
(aunque luego serán más, seguro).
Porque la sidra se escancia, se lanza desde lo alto, de
manera que el chorro choca (restalla) contra el vaso
y libera dióxido de carbono: la sidra espalma, forma
burbujas que se evaporan enseguida.
La cantidad de sidra que se escancia de cada vez es
variable. Se le llama culín o culete. Echar un culín de gran
tamaño se denomina calcar.
Ver escanciar a los echadores profesionales puede llamar
a engaño. Filar la sidra (dejarla caer de forma suave y
continua) parece fácil, pero requiere técnica y habilidad.
Para practicar, aconsejamos hacerlo en la bañera y con
agua.
Con el escanciado se liberan todas las cualidades de la
bebida: el aroma, el color…, lo que se llama el cuerpu de la

the bouquet, the colour… what’s called the cider’s cuerpu.
When it espalma in a good way, it is said that it has got alma
and that it fai buen vasu (makes a good glass).
Don’t hesitate: cider is to be shared! The glass is passed from
hand to hand. It is very important to drink the culín in only

No ponga reparos: la sidra se comparte, el vaso pasa de
mano en mano. Es muy importante beber el culín de un
solo trago. Darle al vaso pequeños sorbos podría generar
impaciencia entre sus amigos y desembocar en la muerte
social…
No olvide dejar una cantidad mínima de sidra. Ese
poso se arroja fuera del vaso. Algunos lo atribuyen a una
antiquísima tradición celta por la que se devuelve a la
Madre Tierra una parte de lo que ella nos da.
Otros, más prosaicos, dicen que se hace por higiene, para
limpiar el borde del vaso. Cualquiera sabe.
La sidra, como el flamenco, tiene palos. El palu lo
componen las cualidades organolépticas (el aroma, el
sabor, el color) que caracterizan a la sidra de un mismo
tonel (según su tamaño se le llama pipa) o que procede
de un mismo llagar.
Cada bebedor experto (sidreru) tiene sus palos favoritos
que no se encuentran en todas las sidrerías (chigres).
De ahí que cada una cuente con parroquianos fi eles,
generalmente bulliciosos. Puede que alguno se anime
a entonar un canciu de chigre, una canción asociada al
consumo de sidra. Cuanta más sidra, más canciones.
La sidra invita a la camaradería. En torno a la botella nadie
se siente extraño. No obstante, que no le engañen la
alegría del momento y su escasa graduación.
Aunque sólo sea porque, en exceso, hasta la sidra
puede ser perjudicial, así que siempre es recomendable
acompañarla con algo de “picar” (comer).

Do not forget to leave a small amount of cider in the glass.
Those dregs are to be thrown out. Some people attribute it to
an ancient Celtic tradition of giving back to Mother Earth a
part of what she gives us.
Other, more prosaic, people say it is done for hygiene, to clean
the rim of the glass. Who knows.
Cider, like fl amenco, has palos. The palu is made up by the
organoleptic properties (the bouquet, the fl avour, the colour)
which characterize the cider coming from the same barrel
(according to its size it is called a pipa) or coming from the
same llagar (cider presshouse).
Each expert drinker (sidreru) has got favourite palos that are
not found in all the sidrerías (chigres). So that is the reason
why each sidrería has got its own loyal, regular and generally
noisy clients. Maybe some of them will feel like singing a
canciu de chigre, a song associated with cider drinking. The
more cider there is, the more songs are sung.
Cider is an invitation to comradeship. Nobody feels like a
stranger around the bottle. However, do not be misled by the
happiness of the moment and the low alcohol content. If only
because, taken in excess, even cider can be harmful so a good
tip is to accompany it with something a bite to eat.

Serín, Cagonera, Estaño o La Ñora.
The El Rinconín-La Ñora pathway is the natural continuation
of the San Lorenzo Wall walk, making it a popular choice for
the Gijon locals and earning it the name of ‘the cholesterolfriendly route’. It is the longest of the district routes. Its 10.35
kilometres along the east coast, accompanied at all times by
the deep azure backdrop of the sea, offer marvellous views
over the sea and the cliffs, with mountains lining the horizon.
As we make headway, we stumble upon natural viewpoints
such as the point of Cervigón, the Cape of San Lorenzo or
the hill of the Cuervo and cliffs over remote beaches such as
Peñarrubia, Serín, Cagonera, Estaño and La Ñora.

But the pathway is also an open air museum. Past the wellknown Eulogy of the Horizon by Chillida, which overlooks
the Santa Catalina Hill, a stunning collection of sculptures
offer homage to the sea along the route, such as the Madre
del Emigrante (or ‘the Lloca’), Sombras de Luz (‘les
chapones’) and the Homenaje a Galileo Galilei XV, to name
but a few.

ornitológico se suceden una detrás de otra en las orillas
de estos bellos ríos gijoneses. En la primera, que atraviesa
el Parque Fluvial, destacan los humedales y las famosas
pomaradas asturianas en un entorno de belleza natural.
Llama la atención ver cómo los caballos pastan en los
prados nada más salir de la zona urbana.

They can be started from the very same San Lorenzo beach,
level with the Piles bridge, or from the legendary stadium
of El Molinón. Lagoons, ponds, meadows, oak forests and
areas of ornithological interest appear in quick succession
along the banks of these beautiful Gijon rivers. In the first,
which crosses the River Park, the wetlands and the famous
Asturian Apple Orchards are particularly outstanding, all set
within a stunning natural backdrop. Just minutes from the
city, the horses grazing in the meadows are a head-turning
sight.

The second, along the Peñafrancia river, not only offers the
riverside woodland, but also outstanding points of interest,
such as the Atlantic Botanical Gardens, with the historical
La Isla garden dating back over 150 years, and the Tragamón
Oak Grove Natural Monument, an exceptional oak wood
with four-century old trees, or the Universidad Laboral, a
monumental building which today is home to the Laboral
City of Culture. Yet the biggest surprise is waiting at the
end of the route, the source of the Peñafrancia river, known
as the Güeyu Deva. Here the river bursts forth from under
the sanctuary that shares the same name, continuously
replenishing the bucolic and monumental washing place. A
recommendation for those that choose this path, is to visit
some of the cider presses dotted around this area and to
experience how cider is made first-hand.

railway to transport coal from the mines to the El Musel
port. From Tremañes to the famous La Camocha mine
headframe, the transition from industrial landscape to rural
parishes is the most striking feature of this easy and flat route,

en el Botánico y el campamento en inglés, Summer in the

the general public how to interpret the Cantabrian landscape,
with visits to different natural enclaves located from the coast

of the change of season, with the solstice and equinox, which
have become an unmissable part of the Botanic programme.
Over the summer months, children can let off steam in a
very different space in the Garden, with summer camps:

youngest nature-lovers with the Aventura pequebotánica

disciplines. At night, the garden comes into its own, with
the Music with Roots concert cycle and the novel Intimate
Concerts at the Botanic Gardens lending a musical note to
the gardens.
New activities are added to the traditional performances of
Magical Nights and its mythical creatures, with learning
and fun coming together such as Night Adventure, a family
campout with plants, stargazing and careful listening to the
nocturnal sounds of night time animal visitors to the Garden,

Durante mis años universitarios, siempre que
volvía a casa por vacaciones, le pedía a mi
padre que fuésemos por el Paseo del Muro
para poder ver el mar desde el coche. Desde
hace cinco años, cada vez que regreso a Gijón,
repito el mismo ritual, pero ahora lo hago a
golpe de zapatilla.
Tengo mi particular ruta: bajo desde Cabueñes, por la
Universidad Laboral, hasta llegar a la Guía, para desde allí
enganchar el carril bici hasta el Molinón. De rigor, dar un
par de vueltas por El Kilometrín, para luego ir en dirección
al Muro. Veo el mar y lo primero que hago es dirigir mis
zancadas hacia el paseo del Rinconín y saludar a la Madre
del Emigrante (“La Lloca”, como se conoce en Gijón a esta
escultura de Ramón Muriedas). La rodeo –casi como si le
presentase mis respetos–, respiro y saboreo el olor a mar
para enfilar de nuevo el paseo en dirección a la iglesia de
San Pedro.
Sé que el cemento no es lo mejor para las articulaciones
de un corredor, pero yo no puedo resistirme a este mítico
paseo mientras voy contando las escaleras, pasando por
la “Escalerona”, hasta llegar a la iglesia. Y de ahí, casi como

Throughout my years as a university student,
whenever I went home over the holidays, I would
always ask my father to take me to the Paseo del
Muro seaside walk so we could watch the sea
from the car. For the past five years, every time I
go back to Gijon, I run through the same ritual,
but this time I do it with my trainers on.
I have customised my route: I head down from Cabueñes,
via the Universidad Laboral, until I reach the Guía, where
I catch the cycle lane to Molinón Stadium. I do a couple of
compulsory laps of the Kilometrín running circuit, then turn
my pace in the direction of the Muro (Wall) seaside route.
Upon contemplating the sea and the first thing I do is stride
to the Rinconín path and greet the Madre del Emigrante
sculpture by Ramón Muriedas (or “La Lloca” as it is known to
the Gijon locals). I circle around her, paying my respects, take
a deep breath and inhale the sea air, then get back on track
and follow the path to the San Pedro church.

si tocase meta, deshago el camino. Es un pequeño ritual y
también mi particular saludo a la ciudad que me vio crecer.
Empecé a correr hace cinco años, sin mucha fe, pero con
constancia. Confiando en que, por fin, parecía haber
encontrado mi deporte. Y lo que comenzó como “un a ver
si me muevo un poco” se ha convertido en una gran pasión
y en parte fundamental de mi día a día. Ya no entiendo la
vida sin correr.
A la largo de estos años, he comprobado cómo se ha ido
sumando mucha gente a esta afición, que no para de
crecer, sobre todo, en el caso de las mujeres. Recuerdo que
en mis comienzos no me cruzaba con muchas chicas. Pero,
ahora, son ellas la mayoría. En Gijón, el atletismo siempre
ha tenido mucha tradición, pero en los dos últimos años,
el boom del running (sobre todo el femenino) se ha hecho
más que evidente. Basta darse una vuelta por la ciudad
para comprobarlo o tomar la salida en la multitudinaria
Carrera de la Mujer, que todos los años bate récords
de participación. Lo que está claro es que este deporte
engancha y que en Gijón no practicarlo es casi delito.
I know that concrete is taxing on runners’ joints, but as I
count the steps, running past the “Escalerona” landmark
stairs at San Lorenzo Beach, till I reach the church, I know
I can never say no to this legendary route. It is here where I
reach my imaginary finishing line and turn back. It is my own
little ritual, and my very personal way of greeting the city that
watched me grow up.
I started running five years ago, with little faith but
considerable perseverance, trusting that I had finally found
my sport. What started as a “let’s see if I can get myself
moving a little” has blossomed into a great passion and
a fundamental part of my day to day life. I can no longer
envisage life without running.
Over the years I have watched how many people have taken
up this pastime, which has not stop growing, especially
among women. I remember that when I first started out I did
not cross paths with many other women, but now they make
up the majority. Athletics has always had a deep-rooted
tradition in Gijon, but over the past two years, (particularly
female) running has clearly made its mark. Just a tour round
the city is enough to prove it, or take a look at the mass of
women at the Spanish Race for Life starting line, which
smashes participation records year upon year. This sport is
clearly addictive, and coming to Gijon and not running, is
truly sinful.
Al Kilometrín, el emblemático punto de encuentro runner
gijonés, le ha salido una sana competencia y, ahora, es
posible correr hasta agotarse por otras rutas, como la
senda del Cervigón o la Fluvial del Piles. Espacios verdes
con sabor a mar que me recuerdan que no hay nada mejor
que correr en casa.
A healthy competition has emerged from the Kilometrín,
the symbolic meeting point for Gijon runners, and now it is
possible to run till you drop along other routes, such as the
Cervigón Greenway or the Piles River way. Green spaces that
taste of the sea, serving to remind me that there really is no
place like home to go running.

Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura ocupa un edificio
singular en Gijón. Erigido a mediados del siglo
XX, la idea original era dar cabida y formación
a los huérfanos de la minería, sin embargo
el proyecto, bajo la dirección del arquitecto
Luis Moya Blanco, comenzó ya a construirse
como Universidad Laboral. Desde 1948 y
hasta la paralización de las obras en 1957 se
construyeron diferentes dependencias que
darían forma a este edificio de más de 130.000
metros cuadrados, pensado como un recinto
autárquico y cerrado sobre sí mismo que
contaba con aulas, talleres, salón de actos,
capilla, residencias e incluso una granja de 100
hectáreas. Ya en los años ochenta la antigua
Universidad Laboral de Gijón pasó a formar

Laboral City of Culture occupies a remarkable
building in Gijón. Erected in the mid-20th century,
the original idea was to provide accommodation
and an education for miners’ orphans.
However, when building commenced under the
supervision of architect Luis Moya Blanco, it was
as a Universidad Laboral, i.e. an educational
centre for working-class children. From 1948
until the termination of work in 1957, different
edifices were raised that were to give shape to
this building occupying over 130,000 square
meters, intended as a self-sufficient complex with
classrooms, workshops, an auditorium, a chapel,
halls of residences and even a 100 hectare farm.
In the 1980s, the former Universidad Laboral de
Gijón was transferred to the National Institute
of Integrated Education, with secondary and
vocational training studies being imparted there
among other specialties. From the 90s on, many
of the facilities already into disuse entered into a
process of steady deterioration.

After a profound refurbishment, this monumental complex
was re-opened in 2007 reconverted into a place where
different proposals converge, including creativity, art,
education and culture. The guided tours of the Laboral, the
varied artistic programme of the Theatre, the temporary
exhibitions and the activities for children and families
comprising the Vamos! programme are just a sample of
what is on offer in this cultural complex; an offer that is
rounded off with venues for congresses and conventions and

plazas castellanas, aunque su principal inspiración es la

The Church is a spectacular oval-shaped building that

an elliptical ground plan occupying an area of more than 800

Behind the Church rises the Tower, perhaps the most
characteristic building of the Laboral, serving to identify the
City of Culture at a glance. Inspired by the Giralda in Seville,
the Tower of Hercules in A Coruña and the Lighthouse of
Alexandria, its privileged scenic balcony allows visitors to
enjoy fantastic views of the Laboral complex and many of the
city’s attractions, including the Botanic Gardens, the campus,
the surrounding mountains and the Asturian coastline.
SPACES WITH NEW USES
Interesting activities make the most of the superb facilities of
the Laboral. The former convent of the Poor Clares Sisters, who
were responsible for the logistics of the Universidad Laboral
for decades, is now the headquarters of the Principality
of Asturias Radio and Television Corporation (RTPA). The
Laboral also houses the Principality of Asturias Services
Agency (SERPA), the ThyssenKrupp Innovation Elevator
Center R&D and Innovation Offices and Laboratory, and the
Public Company responsible for Managing and Promoting
Tourism and Culture, dependent on the Principality of
Asturias Government.

LABoral Centre for Art and Industrial Creation occupies over
14,000 square meters of old vocational training workshops

definitiva, tal y como reza el eslogan turístico

esas frases resumen el carácter dinámico,
participativo, de una villa que presume de

Before Antroxu transforms the face of Gijon, the women
of Gijon celebrate “Jueves de Comadres” (Thursday of
Sisterhood); an event exclusively for women when they
meet, eat and relish in their lively and carefree evening that
stretches well into the night. February is also the month
in which Gijon offers up the best theatre to its youngest
residents. FETEN, the European Performing Arts Fair for

A primeros de agosto, se celebra el Día de Asturias en
Gijón. Se trata de una fiesta de exaltación de la asturianía,

The arrival of summer in June gets the city’s pulse racing and
street entertainment takes on a life of its own. Gijon unveils
its most festive nature on the 23rd June with the midsummer
night celebration of the “Night of San Xuan” on the Poniente
Beach. Thousands of Gijon residents congregate around
a huge bonfire to welcome the arrival of summer, to make
wishes and participate in the traditional danza prima dance.
Folk music, cider, bonfires and fireworks are the beating heart
of this Celtic-style celebration with a buzzing atmosphere.
The 29th June is party time once again in Gijon as the city
celebrates San Pedro Day. The waters are blessed and
numerous folklore groups brighten up the streets with their
music. It is also the day upon which Honours and Distinctions
are awarded, and when municipal authorities acknowledge
the hard-work of individuals and associations that have
contributed to the city. The end of June the Recinto Ferial Luis
Adaro (Fair Ground) plays host to “Metrópoli”, a cultural and
entertainment media festival, where comics, humour, music,

In July the Festivities Department sets about organising “Art
in the Street”, a pioneering Spanish cultural programme
that has been running for decades, offering young Asturians
the chance to show off their skills to their neighbours and
visitors alike. Throughout July and August in different

personas, desfilan artistas de talla nacional e internacional
convirtiendo a Gijón en la capital cultural y festiva del

la Bahía de San Lorenzo en la que se congregan más de
600.000 personas.
Una de las fiestas más populares y de mayor repercusión es
la dedicada a la sidra natural. La sidra es la bebida asturiana
por excelencia y se obtiene de la fermentación del mosto
de la manzana. Durante una semana, siempre la última del
mes de agosto, los gijoneses y los numerosos visitantes
se echan a la calle para dar cuenta de la sidra y de todos
sus derivados. En la zona del Puerto Deportivo se puede
disfrutar de un mercadillo tradicional, de conciertos, de
charlas y conferencias, de visitas guiadas a pomaradas y
llagares, del récord mundial de escanciado simultáneo, de
neighbourhoods, musicians, actors, magicians, dancers and
other talented individuals, take their place on stages set up
on pavements, in squares and in parks, charging summer
evenings with atmosphere. The end of July sees the city adopt
its more international spirit, organising a festival in which
it reveals its more Atlantic side by welcoming cultural and
gastronomic expertise from other coastal countries such as
Portugal, France, Britain, the Netherlands, etc.
July is also the month in which Gijon holds its Semana
Negra (Noir Week) a multicultural festival, which fuses

can enjoy popular culture, and get the chance to hear
conferences, participate in book launches, enjoy a sandwich
or hop on one of the tallest big wheels in Europe.
In summer, Gijon sounds great. The biggest concerts take
place in different locations. For example, in 2015 on 17th and
18th July, the city is set to host performances by Elton John
and Lenny Kravitz in the Las Mesas Sports Complex. Two
concerts that put Gijon on the map, adding to the list of other
hugely successful acts such as the Rolling Stones and Bruce
Springsteen.
The start of August brings with it Asturias Day in Gijon. This
is a celebration of all things Asturian; from gastronomy to
folklore. The Plaza Mayor and the Santa Catalina Hill hold
traditional dances, the danza prima, and a collective picnic
on a day when traditional sports and rural-style meals are
enjoyed by groups of friends and family. From the 31st July till
the 2nd August 2015, the Mod culture rolls up to the city thanks
to the “Euro Yeyé”, a festival dedicated to sixties culture, with
concerts, scooter routes and market stalls.
Gijon’s patron saint festivities are celebrated in the middle
of August with Semana Grande (Grand Week). The cultural
programme runs from 7th till the 16th August, with two
daily concerts, one in the Plaza Mayor and the other on the
Poniente Beach. Tens of thousands of people come to watch
as national and international artists transform Gijon into the
Northern Spain Cultural and Festive Capital. On 14th August,
the city gathers on San Lorenzo Bay to enjoy a spectacular
firework display, attended by over 600,000 people.
One of the most popular and influential festivals is dedicated
to natural cider. Cider is the Asturian drink of excellence and is
produced by fermenting apple juice. The final week of August
sees Gijon locals and visitors taking to the streets to raise a

throughout the 11th and 12th centuries and transformed the
Santiago Way into a hugely important form of spreading
economic, cultural and artistic offerings. The arrival of
Romanesque art and repopulations were associated with the
Way.
The small fishing port and thriving commercial hub of
Gijon, began to expand with the emergence of little villages
around the capital, transforming it into an important part
of the Pilgrimage Route. In the rural areas, no less than 12
Romanesque churches have been preserved: Ceares, Deva,
Castiello, Caldones, Fano, Baldornón, La Pedrera, Porceyo,
Ruedes, Leorio, Cenero and Serín. These modest temples are

The following are particularly noteworthy:
San Miguel Church in Castiello. Dated 12th century, it is very
simple with a semi-circular apse, located in a splendid setting.
Cenero Abbey, 13th century, arguably the best Romanesque
temple in Gijon. It still preserves its poly-lobed arch, with its
succession of lobes in small semi-circumferences symbolising
Heaven from which other skies emerge.
San Salvador de Deva is one of the oldest Romanesque
churches in the Iberian Peninsula, founded as a monastery
in 1006 by Queen Velasquita, the wife of Bermudo II. Linked
to the Way since its beginnings, and clearly connected with
San Salvador de Oviedo, from where the pilgrimage can be
followed along the Primitive Way. Suffering fire damage in
the Civil War, it has been massively reformed, still preserving
its recognisable stone stele. Located near the Deva Campsite
Hostel.
During the 11th and 12th centuries, following the conquest of
Toledo (1085), the Kings of Leon, Alfonso VI and Alfonso IX,
favoured the so-called French Way as a privileged route given
its accessibility. However, by no means did this detract from

a lo largo del siglo XX, sino que Gijón se ha convertido en
el elemento catalizador de los nuevos tiempos en Asturias:
Es una excelente elección para empezar el Camino tanto a
pie como en bici.
Gijón siempre ha sido parte de un tramo del Camino del
Norte. De la capital de la manzana (Villaviciosa) a la capital
de la Costa Verde, así como de la Villa de Jovellanos a la
Villa del Adelantado, son dos etapas de este Camino que
tienen a Xixón como protagonista.
Desde Gijón el peregrino tiene tres posibilidades:
El Camino del Norte. Son 355 Km por la costa hasta co
nectar en Arzúa con el Camino Francés.
Conexión con Oviedo (31 Km) y seguir por el Camino Primitivo (319 km). No hay que olvidar que Gijón es el kiló
metro cero de la actual Ruta Vía de la Plata y es una buena
opción como etapa prólogo a la ruta Jacobea Primigenia.
Conexión con el Camino del Salvador. De Gijón a Oviedo
(31 Km) y seguir la ruta de la Plata hasta León haciendo el
llamado Camino del Salvador a la inversa (120 Km) y desde
León seguir a Santiago por el Camino Francés.
Currently, the Gijon stage can be accessed via Villaviciosa,

Why choose Gijon as a starting point to Santiago?
Gijon is immensely attractive for pilgrims. Not only is it a
welcoming space, which has allowed it to grow over the 20th
century, but it has also become a catalyst in modern times in
Asturias: it is an excellent choice for starting the Way on foot
or by bike.
Gijon has always formed part of the Northern Route. From
the home of the apple (Villaviciosa) to the capital of the
Green Coast, as well as the Town of Jovellanos to the Town
of Adelantado, Gijon steals the show on these two stages of
the Route.
From Gijon, pilgrims have three options:
Follow the Northern Route. This is 355 Km along the coast to
Arzúa where it joins the French Route.
Connect to Oviedo (31 Km) and continue via the Primitive
Route (319 Km). Bear in mind that Gijon is the starting point
of the current Ruta de la Plata and it is a good option as a
prologue to the original Santiago Way.
Connect to the Salvador Route. From Gijon to Oviedo (31
Km) and following the Ruta de la Plata until Leon, complete
the Salvador Route backwards (120 Km), and from Leon continue on to Santiago via the French Route.

ARNAO MINING MUSEUM
The Arnao mine is among the most emblematic collections
of mining heritage in Spain. Located in a privileged coastal
setting, it is the oldest coal mining sites on the Iberian
Peninsula, the oldest vertical mine shaft in Asturias and the
only underwater mine in Europe. Closed in 1915, its headframe, which has been declared a Place of Cultural Interest,
and its underground galleries dating back over two-hundred
years, really bring the atmosphere of a primitive mine back
to life.

La mina de Arnao es uno de los conjuntos de patrimonio
minero más emblemáticos de España. Situada en un

SAMUÑO MINING VALLEY ECO-MUSEUM
En pleno corazón de la cuenca minera asturiana, en el
concejo de Langreo, se encuentra el valle de Samuño.
Como ocurre en toda la zona minera, en este valle convive
el verde y espléndido paisaje natural de la región, con la
huella que ha dejado la actividad minera después de más
de un siglo de extracción.
La recuperación de una trinchera de ferrocarril que
transportaba el mineral desde las minas del alto Samuño
hasta el valle del Nalón, permitirá a los visitantes del
Ecomuseo subirse a un auténtico tren minero y visitar el
Pozo San Luis.
At the very heart of the Asturian mining area, in the district
of Langreo, lies the valley of Samuño. Just as with the entire
mining area, the naturally lush and magnificent trademark
landscape holds the characteristic peculiarities that result
from over a century-worth of mining extraction activity.
The restoration of a railway waggon which transported the
coal from the mines of upper Samuño to the valley of Nalón,
gives Eco-museum visitors the chance to experience an
authentic mining train and visit the San Luis Mine Shaft.
