It is crystal clear that the Gospel of Mathew
Es claro que el Evangelio de San Mateo presenta a
presents Jesus always as a welcoming person with great
joy, filled with compassion and with an extraordinary
sense of humor. However, it seems not really true for
everyone. For instance, in today’s Gospel reading,
Mathew shows an uncharacteristic rudeness from Jesus
which is a very different attitude from how we know Him
in similar circumstances. One of my favorite tones about
Mathew is how he uses different analogy to show us how
faith is the most important matter for Jesus? Either he
portraits Jesus through his humanity or his divinity; the
bottom line is how we get to really know him very
profoundly.
Amazingly, Jesus, in his conversation with the
woman, makes her feel that she doesn’t belong to or she
might not fit neither she is the right person. Surprisingly,
that doesn’t bother her at all and she became more
annoying to the point the disciples told Jesus send her
away. Oh, again send her away, get rid of her, she is
annoying, she is disturbing, she is not really fit. This
attitude from the apostles is really expressed
unequivocally the one of the vast majority of the people
in the church that often thinks others don’t meet the
criteria to belong here. What was in Jesus’ mind when
he said the Canaanite woman: “I was only sent to the lost
sheep of Israel”.
The other point I would like to present is about
the reaction of the woman, in spite of being ignored,
rejected even bullied by those hearing and watching from
distance, she persists, kneels before Jesus and continues
to plead on behalf of her daughter. The uncharacteristic
rudeness of Jesus does not stop her to make her voice
heard even though in the eyes of the disciples she did not
belong. Three reasons that can explain why she did not
belong: first, she is a woman; second, she is a Canaanite
or gentile; and, third, she is annoying.
But her
determination has won her a space among Jesus’
followers and also makes her and her family eligible for
healing and grace.
The lesson for us today is: “God’s love and
mercy are universal - Inclusive, all-encompassing,
complete – for all peoples of all time”. The first and the
second reading echoed that very explicitly as the Prophet
Isaiah exhort the foreigners who join the Lord to keep the
Sabbath free of profanity with the promise that they will
be part of the house of prayer. Likewise, Saint Paul
makes his plea to the gentiles about the gifts and the call
of God to humanity is irrevocable and through Jesus they
have received mercy and grace. God’s mercy is for all.
So today let’s try to be very grateful because we belong
to God, we can easily fit in his grace and mercy. We are
the right people for Him.
Jesús como siempre una persona acogedora, con gran alegría,
lleno de compasión y con un extraordinario sentido de humor.
Sin embargo, no parece realmente cierto para todo el mundo,
por ejemplo, en el Evangelio de hoy la lectura de Mateo
muestra una grosería no característico de Jesús, que es una
actitud muy diferente a como lo conocemos en circunstancias
similares. Uno de mis tonos preferidos sobre Mateo es cómo

más importante para Jesús. Que sea que el presenta a Jesús a

Sorprendentemente Jesús en su conversación con la
mujer la hace sentir que ella no pertenece al grupo o que ella no
encaja tampoco es la persona adecuada. Sorprendentemente,
que no le molestó a ella en absoluto por el contrario ella sigue
molestando a tal punto los discípulos le dijeron a Jesús de
repudiarla. Oh, de nuevo repudiarla, despacharla; ella molesta,
es preocupante y que ella no es realmente del grupo. Esta
actitud de los apóstoles realmente se expresa inequívocamente
la de la gran mayoría de las personas en la iglesia que a
menudo piensa que los demás no cumplen con los criterios para
pertenecer aquí. ¿Que estaba en la mente de Jesús cuando dijo a
la mujer cananea? "Yo sólo fui enviado a las ovejas perdidas
de Israel".
El otro punto que quisiera agregar es acerca de la
reacción de la mujer, a pesar de ser ignorada, rechazada incluso
intimidada por aquellos que escucharon y la vieron desde lejos,
ella persistió, se arrodillo ante Jesús y continúo a rogar por su
hija. La actitud no característica de Jesús no la detiene para
hacer oír su voz a pesar de que a los ojos de los discípulos y
otros que ella no pertenecía. Tres razones que pueden explicar
por qué ella no pertenecía: en primer lugar es una mujer, la
segunda es una cananea o gentil y tercera que es una molestia.
Pero su determinación le ha ganado un espacio entre los
seguidores de Jesús y también hace que ella y su familia sean
elegibles para sanación y la gracia.
La lección para nosotros hoy es que: "el amor y la
misericordia de Dios son universales - Inclusivo, que todo lo
abarca, completa - para todos los pueblos de todos los
tiempos". La primera y la segunda lectura se hizo eco
explícitamente de este mismo punto como el Profeta Isaías
exhortó a los extranjeros que se unen al Señor para guardar el
sábado libre de profanación con la promesa de que serán parte
de la casa de oración. En el mismo sentido, San Pablo hace su
súplica a los gentiles sobre los dones y el llamado de Dios a la
humanidad es irrevocable y por medio de Jesús que han
recibido la misericordia y la gracia. La misericordia de Dios es
para todos. Así que hoy estamos muy agradecidos porque
pertenecemos a Dios, podemos fácilmente ser recipiente de su
gracia y misericordia. Somos las personas adecuadas para Él.

p.m., at St. Joseph’s House (Aug. 14, 21, & 28).
