Si estuvo creado con la idea del dancehall jamaicano, los Toubab All Stars extendieron muy rápidamente el
campo de sus investigaciones abriéndose a todas las formas de músicas negras, rompiendo definitivamente
las fronteras y agregando a sus referencias caribeñas otras más abiertamente provenientes de Africa.
Influencias roots tomadas de los sesenta y setenta, todo esto surgido en el barrio de La Goutte d’Or donde el
grupo comenzó en el 2003, no se necesitaba mucho más para que David Toubab, cantante y al contrabajo,
Magik Franky a la guitarra, Milo N’Dombolo a la batería y Jeff Nga Def al saxo y al clarinete nos presentaran
una nueva creación con dulce olor a especias que nos atrapa de la mano para llevarnos a los más lindos
lugares de Barbès, esos donde el grupo tiene la costumbre de embrujar a su público para volverlo fanático de
su música….. Bienvenido a « Mekfoul District » !
Reggae y Ska, Afro y world, Rumba y un toqué de calypso y de dub, eso es lo que logra seducirnos de este
grupo compartido entre dos mundos y dos épocas, un grupo que juega al mismo tiempo con los anacronismos
y los complementos y que logra hacer de sus canciones piezas auténticas de originalidad, que sugieren
interpretaciones más allá de las palabras y sobretodo de groove. Un solo emblema, el festejo a toda costa, es
así que Toubab All Stars se esmera a cada instante para crear música alegre y festiva hecha con buena letra y
bellas sonoridades, una música que se traduce en temas en los cuales muchos invitados como Djeli Moussa
Kondé, Cheikh Faye, Mesh, Fab Moryou de Owen’s Friends o también Toma Feterman de La Caravane Passe
vienen a acompañar con una kora , teclados o simplemente una voz para « Taxi-Brousse à Paris », « M.
Traoré », « Business Class » o « Cumbia Te Quiero » tantas pequeñas estrellas que de punta a punta
iluminan el « Mekfoul District » a la vez de una manera muy exótica e irresistiblemente parisina. Vayan a
festejar el Kingston en Paris pasando por Yaoundé y Bamako, en apenas una hora, había que contar con el
talento de Toubab All Stars para lograr hacerlo … Prepárense a bailar para encontrar definitivamente el
« Remedio auténtico »!

A metaphorical world away from Paris's
postcard-friendly tourist traps, Barbes
is one of the city's less visited but
most fascinating corners, an Arab and
African enclave colourfully reshaping
the capital's cultural landscape. WOMAD
favourites Orchestre National De Barbes
hail from these streets, as do the
equally wonderful Toubab All Stars. But
while ONB looked towards North Africa
for their source material, the All Stars
reach out to Jamaica and sub-Saharan
Africa,
brilliantly
absorbing
ska,
dancehall and soukous in a thrilling,
impossible-to-resist
formula.

a
fruity horn section to the fore, several
of the songs from their excellent new
record, Mekfoul District, suggest an

à toutes”, David Toubab introduced the
Toubab All-Stars over a ska beat; there
was comedy simultaneous translation
from French to English; the audience
were
coached
in
increasingly
complicated dances. “Ali Boma Ye” was
half-Prince Buster, half-Skatalites, with
the
saxophonist
and
trombonist
shoehorned into red and blue corners
and the crowd chanting a Kinshasa
death cry. By their spaghetti western
encore, “Hang ‘Em High”, the All-Stars
achieved a total knockout.

Toubab All Stars, with their infectious blend of ska, reggae
beats, dancehall and soukous were moved to the Charlie Gillett
Stage where their set got the crowd bouncing around in no time.
They are known as the French version of The Specials, as their
set grew and gained momentum they proved to be another act easily
able to engage the crowd and attempted to teach the crowd some
complicated French phrases so we they all join in! Perfect
festival fun delivered in a get down to this and boogie manner we all did of course, they left us no choice!
