“Como si fuera jugando” (Like playing)
“Como si fuera jugando” (Like playing) Dossier 2015 “COMO SI FUERA JUGANDO (LIKE PLAYING) speaks of play as a part of life, of imagining positive things and of making the world a better place; basically these things that all human beings are born with”. Anselmo Navarro, performer and director. About the play About the the mise en scene “COMO SI FUERA JUGANDO (LIKE PLAYING) was created by the maestro Quique Acuña in 1985 and it was the last play he directed in Costa Rica. Thirty years later the play is still relevant to the reality of the world t o d a y, where inventiveness and technology have become, paradoxically, friend and foe of our society and the planet. LIKE PLAYING is a fable that is narrated in forms and colors, a poem that is told with music, a dream that is shared like a myriad of hands that come together to play with music. Because when puppets need to say nice things, very nice things, they do it like playing. This is a seemingly naive show, as if it was a simple tale. It seeks to contrast through poetic images the wishes and dreams of the workers with the dominant, perverse and humiliating conducts of power. The play seeks to show that knowledge can produce change and that technology requires ethics for its correct utilization. It intends to provoke aesthetic and amusing sensations while at the same time it asks its young spectators to form opinions and reflections. It is based on the fact that puppeteer language is a synthesis of movement, visual artistry, color and specially music. It is meant for all audiences but is fundamentally a family show. Techniques The story is told without words using diverse puppet theater techniques and uses, to achieve this, two scenic areas: the space of the factory and the space of wishes and dreams. The musical environment The music has an important semantic value because it creates environments, effects and thematic phrases that are incorporated as part of the objects’ language. It also provides the rhythm that allows the choreography of movements. In essence, the puppets move as if dancing. The music travels from the synthesizer sounds of Herbie Hancock to the piano harmonies of the Costa Rican composer Manuel Obregón. About MTM Teatro de Muñecos MTM Teatro de Muñecos was founded in 1968 in Costa Rica by Juan Enrique (Quique) Acuña (1915-1988), an Argentinean master puppeteer, poet, and playwright whose work revolutionized Costa Rican puppetry. Since then, MTM has been an independent theatrical organization dedicated to promoting puppet theater through performance and investigation with an aesthetic oriented towards provoking a critical reflection on current reality from the audience. Throughout more than 40 years of existence, MTM has thrived in diverse theatrical spheres: performances for children and adults; advanced workshops for training and professional specialization; basic courses for promoting the art of puppetry; tours throughout the country; performances at national and international festivals; as well as an active participation in Costa Rica’s cultural life. Since 1973 the group has participated in a great number of international tours such as the following: the I Festival de Teatro of Manizales, Colombia (1973); the Encuentro Internacional de Teatro of Puerto Rico (1979); the Campaña Nacional de Alfabetización of Nicaragua (1980); the III Encuentro Internacional de Títeres of Mexico (1980); the VII Festival Internacional de Títeres of Mexico (1984); various puppet festivals in the winter circuit in Spain (1987); the International Festival of Puppets of America in Atlanta, USA (1989); the Semana Mundial de las Marionetas in Canadá (1990); the II Bienal de Títeres of Puerto Rico (1992); the Festival Internacional of Jazz in New Orleans, USA (1997); the VI Bienal de Títeres of Puerto Rico (2000), the Festival Internacional de teatro infantil in El Salvador (2002); the Festival Puppets Up in Canadá (2005); various winter festivals in Spain (2007); the Festival Ruquita Velazco of Colombia (2008); the Festival Internacional de Teatro of Bogotá (2012); the FIT of Cádiz and Madrid (2013); and the Festival Mirada in Brazil (2014).
