The Ignatian Corner!
A Personal Viewpoint on Ethics in Technology
While his Christian Life Community was
discussing the Pope’s Encyclical, Laudato Si’,
Elmer Aznar raised the issue of ethics in
technology. I asked him to write an article on this
topic. Elmer laid out the broad outlines. I will
strive to show how Francis looks at technology
and it ethics.
Pope Francis has a scientific background
himself, in chemistry. He agrees that technology is
here to stay. But, TECHNOLOGY IS NOT
NEUTRAL. Its ethical goodness depends upon
whether it is beneficial or harmful, not only to
human beings but also to animals, plants, and all
of creation. So, Francis is both positive and critical
in his attitude toward technology. His ethical
treatment begins in Chapter Three, by looking at
THE HUMAN ROOTS OF THE ECOLOGICAL CRISIS.
I insert that section, paragraphs 102 - 105:
I. Technology: Creativity and Power
102. Humanity has entered a new era in which
our technical prowess has brought us to a
crossroads. We are the beneficiaries of two
centuries of enormous waves of change: steam
engines, railways, the telegraph, electricity,
automobiles, airplanes, chemical industries,
modern medicine, information technology and,
more recently, the digital revolution, robotics,
biotechnologies and nanotechnologies.
It is right to rejoice in these advances and
to be excited by the immense possibilities that
they continue to open up before us, for “science
and technology are wonderful products of a Godgiven human creativity.” The modification of
nature for useful purposes has distinguished the
human family from the beginning: technology
itself “expresses the inner tension that impels
man gradually to overcome material limitations.”
Technology has remedied countless evils
that used to harm and limit human beings. How
can we not feel gratitude and appreciation for this
progress, especially in the fields of medicine,
engineering, and communications? How could we
not acknowledge the work of many scientists and
engineers who have provided alternatives to
make development sustainable?
103. Technoscience, when well directed, can
produce important means of improving the
quality of human life, from useful domestic
appliances to great transportation system
bridges, buildings and public spaces. It can also
produce art and enable men and women
immersed in the material world to “leap” into the
world of beauty. Who can deny the beauty of an
aircraft or a skyscraper? Valuable works of art
and music now make use of new technologies. So,
in the beauty intended by the one who uses new
technical instruments and in the contemplation of
such beauty, a quantum leap occurs, resulting in a
fulfillment that is uniquely human.
104. Yet it must also be recognized that nuclear
energy, biotechnology, information technology,
knowledge of our DNA and many other abilities
that we have acquired have given those with the
knowledge, and especially the economic
resources to use them, an impressive dominance
over the whole of humanity and the entire world.
Never has humanity had such power over itself,
yet nothing ensures that it will be used wisely,
particularly when we consider how it is currently
being used.
We need but think of the nuclear bombs
dropped in the middle of the 20th century or the
array of technology that Nazism, communism and
other totalitarian regimes have employed to kill
millions of people, to say nothing of the
increasingly deadly arsenal of weapons available
for modern warfare.
In whose hands does all this power lie or
will it eventually end up? It is extremely risky for
a small part of humanity to have it.

Lenten Directed
Retreat
February 14-20, 2016
Our Lenten Weeks of Directed Prayer have been a great success. They enable the
participants to get into the Liturgical Season and to deepen their relationship with
God. A team of Ignatian Spiritual Directors will provide individual prayer direction for
interested parishioners in a “retreat” which you can do at home.
The retreat will begin with a group meeting on Sunday, February 14th from
1:15pm - 2:15pm. During the week (Monday - Friday), each person making the retreat
will meet with an Ignatian Spiritual Director for 30 minutes daily. Your director will
discuss prayer with you and suggest Scripture for you to pray each day of the retreat.
On Saturday, February 20th, all participants will gather after the 9:00am Mass for the
conclusion of the retreat.
The only requirement is your commitment to pray for approximately 30 minutes
each day during this time and to meet with your spiritual director daily.
For more information and/or to register, please call the parish office at 704-6643992 by Wednesday, February 10th.

Join Fr. Don on a Pilgrimage to France
September 14 - 23, 2016
Please come join Fr. Don Ward, SJ and a small group of pilgrims as we travel through the
heart of France in search of St. Peter Faber.
Unitours will provide us with a private guide and motor coach throughout the pilgrimage
which includes:





3 nights in Paris
3 nights in Annecy (near the birthplace of Faber)
1 night in Paray Le Monial (St. Margaret Mary and St. Colombiere, SJ)
1 night in Nevers (St. Bernadette)
We will also visit Chartres
The cost of $3,699 (based on 20 pilgrims) includes airfare, breakfast and dinner,
double occupancy in 4 star hotels.
For more information, contact Deanna Hagan at [email protected].
An invitation from Fr. Don:
“The pilgrimage is a very ancient tradition in the church. Holy people and holy places
have attracted believers and have instilled a desire in them to know more about the
people whom God had blessed in such significant ways. But the pilgrimage was also a
most happy and human event, attracting interesting persons who
sought the adventure of community and the joy of discovery along the road they would
be traveling. (The Canterbury Tales is a wonderful example of this). With our
pilgrimage to discover a most interesting Jesuit saint, one of the least known but most
important founders of the Society of Jesus, Peter Faber, we hope to create a community
and enjoy each other’s company discovering together the places that influenced Peter
in his young life and his early Jesuit life. The ‘City of Light’ where Peter met Ignatius of
Loyola and where by that meeting his life was changed is where we begin. The
pilgrimage then goes back to Savoy where he was born and raised. Between those two
points many surprises, much laughter and, hopefully, strong friendships, like that of
The Chapel at Villaret,
Peter and Ignatius, will be the end result of our ten days together.”

Encouragement for Women
Who Have Moved
Beginning Wednesday, February
17th, we will offer to all women a
ten week Just Moved –
Newcomers’ class which will
provide encouragement for
women going through the transition and
adjustment of moving. Based on the book After
the Boxes are Unpacked, this is an opportunity to
meet others, exchange insights, and find the
courage to put down roots all over again. Whether
you stay at home, work outside the home, are
single, married or retired, the stress of moving
can overcome you at times. Make some time for
yourself to share and to be assured by new
friends that you will not feel lost in the shuffle.
Sessions meet from 10:00 a.m. to
noon. Interested? We will be at a table after
Masses the weekend of February 13th and
14th.

Presentation of the Lord
This Tuesday the Church celebrates the feast of
the Presentation of the Lord which occurs forty
days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as
Candlemas day, since the blessing and procession
of candles may take place at Mass. This is known
as a "Christmas feast" since it points back to the
Solemnity of Christmas. Many Catholics practice
the tradition of keeping out the Nativity creche or
other Christmas decorations until this feast.
Luke tells us, quoting Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary
and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every
firstborn child was
to be dedicated to
the Lord. They
also went to
sacrifice a pair of
doves or two
young pigeons,
showing that Mary
and Joseph were
poor. Once in the
temple, Jesus was
purified by the
prayer of Simeon,
in the presence of
Anna the
prophetess.

P. Donald Ward,SJ
