WORSHIP AND SPIRITUALITY
SYNOD 2017
“People in our diocese are generous givers, for which I am
particularly grateful. We are called on to support our parishes, the
work of the diocese, Catholic Charities, multiple collections, service
organization and countless other worthy causes. The appeals for
money, volunteers and involvement can become overwhelming at
times. Yet, I see that our people respond with great sacrifice and
goodness. Without such support, the mission and work of the local
Church could not continue.” - Bishop Donald J. Hying

Effective immediately, the business office for the three churches is
closed. All requests should be referred to the St. John the Baptist
Church rectory (see above for details).
This week, Scott Barnes, a representative from our bulletin publisher, Diocesan Publications, will be seeking new and renewing present parish bulletin ads. If you are interested in advertising please

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
The Emerald Isle’s Guide to Life: I had a lot of time to myself last
week in the course of traveling from what could be the greatest
place on Earth (sorry Disney), Beaver Island, Michigan. As an aside,
I truly LOVE this vacation. 30-40 people, on an island, without
much else to do besides have fun. I can't think of any better way to
spend the last few moments of my summer with my family. We
golf, play games, have fun on our "island on the island" and laugh.
Lots of laughs...
Throughout the course of my plane ride & drive to meetings, which
unfortunately had me leave my family a few days early this year, I
couldn't help but keep repeating the same thought over and over
in my mind. I'm always amazed at how simple life can be. On the
Island, there's 1 grocery store, a few bars, a handful of beaches,
but lots of love and care. It's a place where people wave when you
drive by them. You can show up before the incredibly polite golf
course attendant is there, which we often do, and leave money in
the drop box or pay after your round on the honor system. You
can pay for gas AFTER you pump! Cars stay unlocked and the
amount of dust you accumulate is worn proudly like a badge of
honor. Toys and games stay out on the picnic table all week and
are never disturbed.
St. Paul encourages us to “keep our eyes fixed on Jesus”. When
we focus on Jesus and continue to develop a deeper relationship with him we become transformed. Let His love transform
your marriage. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are October 7-9, 2016 or December 9-11, 2016, both at Elk
Grove Village, IL. Early registration is highly recommended. For
reservations/information, call Jim & Kris at 630-577-0778 or
contact us throughhttp://wwme-chicagoland.org .
It's not Utopia by any means. There can be a lot of struggle there
too and life can be incredibly harsh during winter, but there is a
mutual respect by everyone there that is unrivaled. Maybe during
the dark times we have lived through lately, this could be the place
where "change" has already been hiding. The Emerald Isle as it's
called by the locals could be where love, respect, and care has
been building up for a long time. Maybe the rest of the world will
get a taste of this life shortly. One can dream can't he? I have already begun the countdown to next year so I can get my fix! Until
next August Beaver Island...
PEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
FOREVER BLUE AND GOLD
Worldwide Marriage Encounter
Your Name-place
God gives you two names, yours and God’s. Listen for that place
deep within where God has given you God’s own name, the name
that lovers reveal to one another in intimate moments, where God
has told you who God is for you. Who is God for you? It’s unlike
anybody else. You reflect a part of God that no one else will ever
reflect. You reflect back to God a part of the mystery that no one
else will understand.
Where God has given you God’s intimate name, you also have
been given your own name. It takes a while; it takes some listening, so listening, and probably some suffering. It takes some
waiting, desiring; it takes some hoping. But finally we discover
that place where we know who we are; we know what God said.
That place-where-the-names-are-One, God’s name and your
name, that’s the place of inner authority. That’s the place where
the Spirit is able to be heard and received. It’s the only place big
enough and grand enough to be able to believe the daring Gospel
of Jesus Christ.
Hopefully someone has given you the freedom and permission to
trust your own experience, to listen, and to believe your name. It
speaks and evokes you and no one else.
(Taken from The Passion of God and the Passion Within By Richard Rohr, O.F.M.)
A BROKEN HEART
Ann Matura went in for heart surgery last week and she was
called home to her heavenly home to be back with the love of her
life, John, whom she was married to for sixty-five years! It was
evident to all that when John died last December, Ann’s heart was
truly broken.
John and Ann’s relationship with St. John School is beyond doubt
remarkable. They both volunteered to help at school when their
children were students, and then when their grand children
attended St. John, they continued to volunteer, taking on playground duty, an unenviable task. Amazingly, even after all the
grandchildren graduated, the Matura Team continued to volunteer, they were partners that gave totally of their time and talent
for the children of St. John School. It was always a joy to see that
big white Buick rambling down the street carrying John and Ann
for their “job” on the playground.
Yes, John and Ann are united again, volunteering their services
in heaven. God Bless Them!

Obispo Donald J. Hying
"Las personas en nuestra diócesis son donantes generosos, por lo que estoy particularmente agradecido. Estamos llamados a
apoyar nuestras parroquias, trabajar por la
diócesis, Caridades Católicas, múltiples organizaciones de servicio y otras innumerables
causas.
