Lesson 19 www.inglesparaespanoles.com 1 Basic English Grammar saxon genitive 1. = genitivo sajón Si el poseedor es singular se le añade ( ’s ). Tom’s car is red. (El coche de Tom es rojo.) Con los nombres proprios no se pone el artículo. The Tom’s car is red . 2. ¡Error! Si el poseedor es plural se le añade solamente ( ’ ). My friends’ house is large. (La casa de mis amigos es grande.) 3. Si el poseedor es plural irregular, se le añade ( ’s ). The children’s room is small. (El cuarto de los niños es pequeño.) 4. Si el nombre del poseedor es singular y termina por “ s ”, se le puede añadir tanto ( ’ ) como ( ’s ). > Charles’ house is small. también > Charles’s house is small. Si hay dos poseedores, se le añade la “ ’s ” solamente al último. 5. > (menos común) Tom and Margaret’s tastes are different. Nota > Abel’s sister’s name is Debra. The dog’s tail. 7. Con algunas expresiones la posesión se puede expresar de diferentes maneras. > The hotel heating system was not working. The heating system of the hotel was not working. A two weeks’ holiday. A two-week holiday. A two weeks holiday. A two hours’ film. A two-hour film. A two hours film. 8. La relación de posesión entre dos objetos se puede expresar usando uno como adjetivo (en primera posición), y el otro como substantivo (en segunda posición). > The book cover is green. (La portada del libro es verde.) ¡Error! The book’s cover is green. The church roof is red. The church’s roof is red. ¡Error! también The cover of the book is green. The roof of the church is red. (¡Por el amor de Dios!) 10. > El Saxon Genitive se usa también con expresiones de tiempo, de distancia y nombres de ciudad. Today’s programme. (El programa de hoy.) An hour’s walk. (Un paseo de una hora.) They went for a five miles’ walk in the forest. (Se fueron por un paseo de cinco millas en el bosque.) London’s museums. (Los museos de Londres.) New York’s underground. Go to the baker’s (shop) and buy some bread.
