Dear SGMS Families,
In the upcoming weeks, the results of our students’ California Assessment of Student Progress and
Performance will be released. These scores will tell you and our school how your child is doing
under the updated California learning standards for math and English language arts. These
standards focus more on real-world skills like critical thinking and problem solving.
The new assessments are fundamentally different from the old tests. You should not try to compare
these results with your child’s previous scores, as they are measuring very different things. These
results are a starting place for a detailed record of your child’s progress through school, which will
help you and our school give them the support they need to succeed. This year’s tests establish a
baseline and the results will not be used to determine if your child moves on to the next grade.
You will receive your child’s results in a Student Score Report. Students will receive an overall score
for each subject, ranging from 2,000 to 3,000. This score shows if students met, did not meet, or
exceeded expectations for their grade. The second page of the report includes a further breakdown
of that score, providing individualized information on your child’s academic strengths and potential

There are a few pieces of key information parents with students preparing for college should know
about the updated standards and assessments:

Higher education in California strongly supports the new standards, including the University of
California, CSU, CCC, and the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities.
These new assessments were developed with the cooperation of the California State University
System (CSU). For students planning to attend a CSU or most California community colleges,
meeting/exceeding expectations on the 11th grade test can be used to demonstrate they are ready for
college level work and will not need to take remedial English or math courses. This can save time and
money in the first years of college. For students who fall short of meeting the 11th grade standards,
the test provides an early warning on areas to focus on during their senior year, to avoid enrolling in
remedial courses when entering college.
Beginning in 2016, the updated SAT will be aligned with the new rigorous California State Standards.
That means the critical thinking, problem-solving, and reading and writing skills emphasized by
these standards will help prepare your child for that important test.

Queridas familias de SGMS,
En las semanas que vienen, los resultados de las Asesorias de Progreso y Actuacion de Estudiante de
California estaran disponibles. Estos resultados le diran a usted y a la escuela como su estudiante esta
haciendo bajo los nuevos estandares de Matematicas y Artes de Lenguaje. Estos estandadares se enfocan mas
en habilidades del mundo real como: Pensar Criticamente y Resolver Problemas.
Las nuevas asesorias son fundamentalmente diferentes a examenes viejos. No debe de comparar los
resultados de ahora con los viejos porque son medidos por cosas diferentes. Resultados son un lugar de
comienzo para tener detalles del progreso de su estudiante en la escuela, el cual les ayudara a ustedes y la
escuela a darles el apoyo que necesitan para tener exito. Los examenes de este año estableceran una base y
los resultados no se usaran para determinar si su estudiante pasa al siguiente grado.
Usted recibira los resultados de su estudiante en un reporte. Los estudiantes recibiran una puntuacion
general para cada clase/sujeto en una escala de 2,000 a 3,000. Estos resultados enseñan si los estudiantes
alcanzaron, no alcanzaron o sobrepasaron lo que se esperaba segun su grado.

Hay unas pocas piezas de informacion clave para padres con estudiantes preparandose para el colegio que
deben saber en cuanto a los estandares y asesorias:

Educacion alta en California apoya fuertemente los nuevos estandares, incluyendo la Universidad de California,
CSU, CCC, y la Asociacion de Colegios Independientes y Universidades de California.
Estas son nuevas asesorias y fueron desarrolladas con la cooperacion del sistema de universidades aqui en
California (CSU). Para los estudiantes que planean ir a CSU o a los colegios de la comunidad en California, el
alcanzar/exceder expectaciones en el 11 grado examenes se pueden usar para demostrar que estan listos para
trabajo a nivel de colegio y que no necesitan tomar clases remediales de matematicas o de Arte de Lenguaje. Esto
ahorraria tiempo y dinero en los primeros años de colegio. Para estudiantes que no alcanzan los estandares del
11 grado, el examen prove una advertencia temprana en areas para enfocar durante el ultimo año de
preparatoria para evitar registrarse en cursos remediales al entrar al colegio.
Empezando en 2016, el SAT estara alineado con los Estandares rigurosos del Estado de California. Significa que
pensamiento critico, resolver problemas y habilidades de escritura y lectura emfatizadas por estos estandares
prepara a su estudiante para este importante examen.
