para complementar nuestros nuevos aviones y tripulaciones para quedar certificados y poder aterrizar

Esperamos que pronto obtengamos esa certificación. Esto es el último paso de nuestra modernización de flota, porque los últimos 2 aviones que faltaban llegaron en julio. Nuestros Boeing 737-200 los
retiramos este mes de circulación.

This winter we have had particularly severe problems due to fog and inevitably, have experienced poorer punctuality than usual: there were a number of days on which almost 90% of our night
flights were affected, even more so in the early morning, at several airports.
I deeply regret this situation and ask for your understanding on the matter. We are striving to
certify our new planes and pilots to be able to land automatically on runways which have the instrument landing system in place, thus enabling our planes to land in foggy conditions.
We hope to receive this certification soon and it is the last step in our fleet modernization process.
Our two latest planes arrived in July and our Boeing 737-200s are being retired from service this month.

antecedente histórico: Charles Darwin habló del poder curativo
de sus aguas termales y del aire puro del lugar cuando estuvo
por aquí en 1834, durante su famoso viaje alrededor del mundo. Las instalaciones actuales del hotel abrieron en 2005, con
lujosas habitaciones, un restaurante enfocado en cocina chilena
e internacional, un bar con vista al valle del Aconcagua y, por
cierto, dos piscinas termales –una exterior y otra interior, que alcanza los 37 grados– y un sofisticado spa, donde ofrecen desde

La flamante infraestructura de este hotel y centro termal lo convierte, sin duda, en uno de los más importantes de la Región de
la Araucanía. Ubicado a los pies del volcán Lonquimay, a la entrada de la localidad de Malalcahuello y rodeado por araucarias,
destaca por su imponente piscina techada de piedra laja, que
además tiene hidromasaje, camas de aire, cascadas, nado contra corriente y jacuzzi, con temperaturas entre 37 y 43 grados
Celsius. En invierno es un espectáculo: cuando cae nieve –lo que
no es raro–, es posible bañarse en la piscina y ver afuera todo

Termas de Jahuel
Situadas al medio de una quebrada de 450 metros en pleno
Parque Nacional Villarrica y rodeadas de bosque nativo, estas
son una de las termas más sorprendentes de Chile. Se trata de
20 pozones de formas geométricas y unidos por pasarelas de
madera –todo diseñado por el arquitecto Germán del Sol, el mis-
mo tras los primeros hoteles Explora–, que se llenan con agua
termal que brota de la tierra a 80 grados Celsius. Aquí no hay
luz eléctrica ni modernidad: sólo unos vestuarios de madera
cerca de los pozones y un agradable quincho con chimenea y
cafetería para relajarse –aún más– después del baño. Toda una
experiencia.

Located near San Felipe, in the Aconcagua Valley, the most sophisticated thermal baths in Central Chile have an important
historical background: during his famous journey around the
world, Charles Darwin passed through here in 1834 and he
spoke of the healing properties of its thermal waters and the
fresh air of the area. The current facilities of the hotel opened in
2005 with luxurious rooms, a restaurant specialized in Chilean
and international cuisine, a bar with a view of the Aconcagua
Valley and, of course, two thermal pools – one indoors and the
other outdoors, with temperatures that reach 37° Celsius – and
a sophisticated spa, where you can get soothing massages or
facial beauty treatments like exfoliations using chocolate, seaweed, milk, honey and cinnamon.

Termas Geométricas

Located in the middle of a 450 meter-deep ravine in the Villarrica National Park and surrounded by native woods, these
thermal baths are some of the most amazing in Chile. There
are 20 geometric pools linked with wooden walkways – entirely designed by Germán del Sol, the same architect in charge
of the first Explora hotels - , that are filled with thermal water that sprout from the ground at 80° Celsius. Here you won’t
find electricity or modernity: just some wooden dressing rooms
near the pools and a nice wooden pavilion for you to relax on
which has a chimney and coffee shop– you will want to even
more after swimming. Quite an experience.

Termas de Malalcahuello

This hotel’s brand new infrastructure and thermal spa resort
makes it, without a doubt, one of the most renowned within the
Araucanía Region. Located at the foot of the Lonquimay Volcano surrounded by araucarias, just as you enter the town of Malalcahuello, it stands out for its indoor flagstone pool that also
has hydro massage, lilos, cascades, against-the-current swimming, and a jacuzzi with temperatures that range between 37°
and 43° Celsius. During winter it’s quite the spectacle: when it
snows – which is often - , it’s possible to take a swim in the pool
while admiring the white landscape. It also has a hotel with 27

Pucón es la capital termal de Chile. Y Huife, uno de sus exponentes más destacados. El sello de estas termas, además de sus
confortables cabañas, su buen restaurante y su spa, es el río Liucura, que corre caudaloso al lado de los pozones; tanto que llega
a tronar. Por eso, lo que muchos hacen en Huife es bañarse en
alguna de las tres piscinas exteriores, con aguas de notorio olor
a azufre que tienen entre 25 y 39 grados Celsius, y luego salir
para meterse rápidamente en el río. Los expertos dicen que este
cambio de temperatura es muy beneficioso para la circulación.
En Huife, además, hay una piscina semitechada hidroterapéutica
y piletas privadas de agua termal.

Pucón is the thermal capital in Chile and Huife is one of its most famous exponents. These thermal baths are known not only for their
comfortable cabins, their great restaurant and their spa, but also
because the Liucura River rushes and thunders right next to the
pools. That’s the reason why many that go to Huife swim in one of
the three outdoor pools -with waters that have a strong smell of
sulphur and reach temperatures of between 25° and 39° Celsiusand then quickly dive into the river. Experts claim that this change
in temperature is great for circulation. In Huife, there’s also a semi
roofed hydrotherapeutic pool and private thermal water pools.

El valle de Curarrehue sorprende por lo frondoso de su paisaje.
Aquí, camino hacia la frontera con Argentina, las montañas están
tapizadas de bosques, que forman parte de uno de los sectores
menos conocidos del Parque Nacional Villarrica. Es en ese entorno donde se emplaza este pequeño centro termal, que cuenta
con dos piscinas, una al aire libre y otra techada, con aguas que
alcanzan los 39 grados Celsius. Además, hay cabañas de madera

The valley of Curarrehue surprises with its lush landscape. Here, on
the road to the border with Argentina, the mountains are covered
in woods that are part of one of the lesser known areas in the Villarrica National Park. This is where this small thermal resort is located. It has two pools, one outdoors and one indoors, with waters
that reach a temperature of 39° Celsius. They also have wooden
cabins that can accommodate up to 6 guests and a dining room
with a rural atmosphere that specializes in seafood.

These spa facilities are hard to reach – you can only get there by
sailing on a catamaran through the Seno Ventisquero. Its location and modern facilities make Termas de Puyuhuapi, without
a doubt, the most exclusive thermal resort in Chile. Also, its first
class hotel was built with native wood, it boasts three thermal
pools surrounded by vegetation; a spa with an indoor thermal
pool and treatments like thalassotherapy, which is based on the
use of seawater and seaweed to eliminate toxins, alleviate rheumatism or arthritis. Although it’s now popular in other thermal
resorts, it has to be said that Puyuhuapi was the first one to apply it. You can only stay at the hotel on a 3 to 5 night basis which
includes a ride from the thermal baths to Balmaceda airport in
Aysén, and several excursions around the surrounding area, like
walks in the Queulat National Park or fishing excursions in the
beautiful Risopatron Lake.

River, this thermal resort is surrounded by a mountain range
and has six pools, most of them outdoors – there’s only one

National Park, the Aguas Calientes thermal baths are another
good alternative, although slightly more simple. They have an
indoor and an outdoor pool where you can swim with a view of
the Chanleufu River. There are also 26 cabins, camping sites and a
restaurant that is open all year round. The surroundings are green
and spectacular: here you can do several activities like trekking
through native forests, skiing in Antillanca – during the winter season – and going on a 900-meter long adrenaline-fuelled canopy
ride, among others.

and Turkish baths, you will also find a treatment called “Baño de

Creado hace miles de años por los chinos, el
famoso juego de piedra, papel y tijera –conocido en Chile como “cachipún”– es mucho
más que un juego de niños. Tanto así, que
existe una sociedad llamada World Rock Paper Scissors Society (RPS, la sociedad mundial del piedra, papel y tijera), que cuenta
con más de diez mil afiliados de Estados Unidos, Canadá y Europa. Creada en 1918, cuenta con un reglamento establecido, libros,
manuales y hasta camisetas sobre el juego. Es
más: desde 2002 que realizan el campeonato
mundial de cachipún en Canadá, en donde el
ganador se lleva un premio de más de 7.000
dólares.

The most famous song for celebrating someone’s birthday, hard as it may be to believe, is
copyrighted. Actually, it is one of the world’s
most lucrative songs: for every time it is sung in

Once upon a time, Cartagena of the Indies was brimming with
gold: this was the main port used for shipping all the wealth from
the New World to Spain. While centuries have passed, this beautiful
Caribbean city – tourist capital of Colombia – still holds many
treasures but these days they can be found on its streets. Below you

covered in amber tones. The effect comes from the lights
that illuminate every square, street, and church; every corner
hidden behind its famous and ancient walls. The same walls
that were built over 400 years ago to protect this city from

por sus plazas: la principal es la de la Aduana, donde ocurren la
mayoría de los eventos masivos. Pero también está la turística
plaza de San Diego, donde está el famoso hotel Sofitel Santa
Clara –que inspiró la novela de García Márquez Del amor y otros
demonios–; la de Bolívar, donde está el Museo del Oro, la Galería Cano (con piezas de arte muy refinadas) o el espeluznante

En el Centro Histórico no faltan sitios donde sentarse, ya sea
para ver el atardecer o probar la cocina local. Un imperdible para
lo primero es el Café del Mar (Baluarte de Santo Domingo; www.

vista al mar Caribe y donde hay que sentarse, pedir una piña
colada y ver el sol caer. Para lo segundo, el exclusivo restorán El

ture inside is very well preserved and, best of all, it can be perfectly explored on foot. The idea is to walk aimlessly around its
cobblestoned streets. A good way to do so is to use its squares
as reference points: the main square is known as Aduana, where
most of the city’s mass events take place. There’s also the very
touristy square of San Diego, which houses the famous Sofitel
Santa Clara Hotel – which served as inspiration for the García
Márquez novel Of Love and Other Demons-; or Bolívar square,
where you can find the Museo del Oro, Galería Cano (with refined art pieces) or the creepy Museo de la Inquisición, which
exhibits torture implements used to punish heretics during the
colonial period; or Santo Domingo square, which holds Botero’s
famous fat lady statue, right next to busy bars and restaurants
where the atmosphere is always cosmopolitan and lively.
You will always find somewhere to sit in the Historic District,
whether it is for watching the sunset or trying local food. For
the former, you cannot miss going to Café del Mar (Baluarte de
Santo Domingo; www.cafedelmarcolombia.com), located just
along the walls, with a view of the Caribbean Sea and where
you only need to sit down, order a piña colada and watch the
sunset. For the latter, go to the exclusive El Santísimo restaurant (Calle del Santísimo 18-19; www.restauranteelsantisimo.
com), where French chefs use Colombian ingredients in their
recipes, like shrimps in tamarind and coconut sauce or mango
mousse with grape sauce.

Con un Centro Histórico tan bien conservado y con tantas opciones para ver y hacer, la verdad es que no dan muchas ganas de
salir de allí. ¿El problema? Hace tanto calor (30 grados promedio)
y la humedad es tan alta (no baja del 90 por ciento) que hay que
refrescarse de algún modo.
With a very well preserved historic district and so much to see
and do, the truth is that you don’t feel like leaving the city. The
problem is that it’s so hot (30° Celsius average) and so humid
(it doesn’t fall below 90%), you have to cool off somehow.
Y viene aquí la aclaración: aunque Cartagena está junto al mar
Caribe, las playas cercanas a la ciudad no son lo más recomendable. Tienen arena oscura, agua no tan clara y, lamentablemente, suelen estar llenas de insistentes vendedores ambulantes que
ofrecen desde poleras hasta masajes.
Por eso, lo mejor es partir hacia el Muelle de los Pegasos y tomar
alguna lancha que lo lleve hasta las Islas del Rosario, un parque
nacional coralino situado a una hora de navegación. Hay tures por
el día que incluyen almuerzo y que llevan a hacer esnórquel en
aguas realmente cristalinas –ahora sí–, ver shows de delfines o tiburones amaestrados o, simplemente, a acostarse en las hamacas
sobre la arena que cada hotel de las islas –como la Isla del Sol o la
Isla del Encanto– dispone para sus pasajeros.
Pero hay más: otra isla imperdible por sus playas cristalinas es
Barú, a la que se puede llegar tanto en lancha por la Bahía de
Cartagena como por tierra, cruzando el Canal del Dique desde
Pasacaballos (vía Mamonal). Con poco desarrollo turístico, allí hay
algunos hoteles como el Decameron y, sobre todo, arenas blancas
de postal.
Ahora, si quiere algo mucho más exclusivo, el dato es la Isla Múcura, a dos horas en lancha, que ya es parte del llamado Archipiélago de San Bernardo. Allí funciona el hotel Punta Faro, con
acogedoras cabañas de estilo rústico y tucanes que se posan en
las mesas como si nada. Todo ciento por ciento tropical.

However, a point of clarification: although Cartagena is right
next to the Caribbean Sea, the city’s beaches are not the best.
The sand is dark, the water is not very transparent and, unfortunately, they’re packed with insistent street vendors selling
things such as t-shirts and massages.
That’s why it’s best to head for Muelle de los Pegasos and board
a boat that will take you to Islas del Rosario, a coral National
Park located just 1 hour by boat from Cartagena. There are day
tours that include lunch and snorkelling in crystal-clear waters,
shows with trained dolphins and sharks, or the possibility to
just relax on the hammocks that every hotel on the islands –
like Isla del Sol or Isla del Encanto – offers to its guests.
There’s another island you cannot miss: Barú, with pristine
beaches, can be accessed either by boat through the Bahía de
Cartagena; or over land, through Canal del Dique from Pasacaballos (via Mamonal). With not much tourism development,
here you will find some hotels like Decameron and, above all,
pristine white sands.
Now, if you want something much more exclusive, we recommend going to Isla Múcura, which is a two-hour boat ride away
and a part of the San Bernardo Archipelago. Here you will find
the Punta Faro Hotel, with cosy rustic cabins and colourful toucans everywhere. A Caribbean experience through and through.

El otro Cartagena
El boom turístico del Centro Histórico ha tenido consecuencias:
Prácticamente todas sus casas han sido convertidas en hoteles, restaurantes y tiendas comerciales. Sin embargo, hay un sitio que aún
se resiste a la desaparición de la auténtica vida cartagenera: El antiguo barrio obrero de Getsemaní.
Ubicado a un costado del Centro Histórico, en las sinuosas calles de
Getsemaní aún se puede ver la vida comunal, las conversaciones
de puerta a puerta, las tradiciones de raza negra. Sin embargo, las
cosas también están comenzando a cambiar, y eso debido a sitios
como el Hotel Armería Real y su restaurante El Reducto (Calle Larga con Pedregal 25-28; ), un alojamiento boutique de lujo que le ha
atraído nuevos aires –y visitantes– al barrio; o el restaurante La Casa
de Socorro (Calle Larga 8E-112), destacado por ser el favorito de los
vecinos y por sus platos abundantes, donde brillan los camarones y
cangrejos acompañados con arroz de coco y plátanos fritos.
Lo ideal es recorrer de día las calles de Getsemaní y, a la noche, escoger entre sus dos bares emblemáticos, que están en los límites con
el Centro Histórico. Uno es el Café Havana (Calle de la Media Luna
con Calle del Guerrero; www.cafehavanacartagena.com), bastión de
la salsa y muy frecuentado tanto por locales como turistas. El otro,
la famosa discoteque Mister Babilla (Av. Del Arsenal 8B-137; www.
misterbabilla.com), que a estas alturas es toda una institución de
Cartagena de Indias: Allí la costumbre es bailar arriba de las mesas.
¿Algún problema? Ninguno. No se olvide que esto es el Caribe.
The Other Side to Cartagena
The historic district’s tourist boom has had its consequences: virtually all of its houses have been turned into hotels, restaurants and
shops. However, there’s still a place that refuses to let go of authentic
Cartagena life: the old working class neighbourhood of Getsemaní.
Nestled next to the historic district, in Getsmaní you can witness everyday life, door-to-door conversations, and Afro-Colombian traditions. However, things are already changing due to places like Hotel
Armería Real and its restaurant El Reducto (Calle Larga and Pedregal 25-28), a boutique hotel that has given the neighbourhood a
new air and new visitors; or La Casa de Socorro restaurant (Calle
Larga 8E-112), famous for being a favourite among locals and for its
hearty dishes, where shrimps and crabs with a side of coconut rice
and fried bananas are the main stars.
During the day, the ideal thing is to walk around the streets of Getsemaní, and at night, choose between its two emblematic bars located
on the border of the historic district. The first one is Café Havana
(Calle de la Media Luna and Calle del Guerrero; www.cafehavanacartagena.com), a mainstay of salsa and frequented by locals and
tourists alike. The second one is the famous club Mister Babilla (Av.
Del Arsenal 8B-137; www.misterbabilla.com), which these days is
a Cartagena institution: people tend to dance on the tables. Don’t
worry though; this is the Caribbean after all.

Inaugurado en noviembre de 2012, el hotel boutique Su Merced
se ubica en el barrio Lastarria, entre los barrios Bellas Artes y
Bellavista, y el Parque Forestal. Pero emplazarse en uno de los
polos turísticos y culturales más interesantes de Santiago no es
el único atractivo de este hotel: el edificio en el que se ubica
data de principios del siglo XX y fue declarado de conservación
histórica. Por esto, para construir sus 9 piezas (desde US 170) se
restauraron las fachadas, al mismo tiempo que se reconstruyó
toda la estructura interior. El resultado final es una mezcla de
modernidad y valor patrimonial, que fue aprobado por el Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales.
Además, en el primer piso está abierto a todo público el restorán
SU Grill & Wine Bar, cuya cocina está a cargo del chef Mauricio
Núñez, ganador del XXV Concurso Nacional de Gastronomía, y
se caracteriza por los sabores de carnes, mariscos y pescados
cocinados a la grilla acompañados de una excelente selección
de vinos chilenos. Durante la semana a la hora de almuerzo hay
un menú que, por ejemplo, puede contar con un mix de hojas
verdes con verduras grilladas, queso parmesano y dressing balsámico, brochetas de pollo al curry con panqueques de brócoli
y salsa de chardonnay y, para terminar, un pudín de chocolate.

Opened in November 2012, the boutique hotel Su Merced is located in the neighbourhood of Lastarria between Bellas Artes
and Bellavista, and the Forestal Park. But being in the middle
of one of the most interesting tourist and cultural corners of
Santiago isn’t the only appealing thing about this hotel: the
building dates back to the beginning of the 20th Century and
was declared a historical conservation site. To build its 9 rooms
(from USD 170 per night), the façade was restored at the same
time as the inside forming a building which maintains both a
modern look and its past heritage; it has since been recognised
by the National Monument Council.
On the first floor is a restaurant open to the public called the SU
Grill & Wine Bar. Mauricio Núñez is the head chef, winner of the
25th National Gastronomy Competition in Chile. The restaurant
is known for its flavoursome grilled meats, shellfish and fish
married with an excellent selection of Chilean wines. At lunchtime during the week there is a menu which offers dishes such
as mixed greens with grilled vegetables, parmesan cheese and

No sólo de comodidades se vive en Huilo-Huilo y una visita a este
lugar no estaría completa sin un recorrido por su bello y verde

Huilo Huilo is not just about comfort, though. A visit to the reserve

para luego tomar el camino Internacional PanguipulliPuerto Fuy que lo llevará hasta la Reserva. Sky Airline
ofrece vuelos todos los días a Temuco desde Santiago
y de lunes a domingo (excepto sábado) a Valdivia.
Desde el aeropuerto Pichoy de Valdivia, el traslado
hasta Huilo-Huilo toma 2 horas y 30 minutos, y desde
el aeropuerto Maquehue, en Temuco, el traslado es
de 2 horas y 45 minutos.
The main access route follows Highway 5 South
(Southbound Panamerican Highway), until
reaching the Lanco junction. From there you need
to continue east on Route 203, until you reach
the borough of Panguipulli. Next you take the
International Panguipulli-Puerto Fuy road which
will lead you up to the reserve. From Valdivia’s
Pichoy Airport, the transfer to Huilo-Huilo takes
around two and a half hours and from Temuco’s
Maquehue Airport, it takes around two and three
quarter hours.

hace tres años, ofrece una de las mejores cocinas naturistas de la ciudad.
Hard as it may be to believe, this hot spot for beef and barbeques is also the
perfect place for lovers of greens. For three years now it has been offering
one of the best places for organic food in the city.

Sí, son los reyes del ojo de bife, el chorizo y el asado; pero también de las preparaciones verdes. La capital Argentina, como
nadie hubiera imaginado, es hoy el nuevo paraíso para los
amantes de las verduras. De hecho, en los últimos tres años,
más de cincuentas restoranes vegetarianos, veganos e incluso
crudistas –en los que ningún vegetal se cocina– han abiertos
sus puertas.
Uno de los más destacados es Hierbabuena, ubicado a pasos
del Parque Lezama, en San Telmo. ¿El fuerte? Cocina naturista
y llena de sabor, capaz de conquistar hasta al carnívoro más
acérrimo. Con una carta en la que casi el cien por ciento está
basada en preparaciones sin carne –salvo una o dos recetas
que incluyen la pesca del día o pollo–, los huevos florentinos
(62 pesos argentinos) son una excelente opción para comenzar; por lejos, unos de los mejores de la ciudad: dos huevos
pochados con salsa holandesa sobre pan hecho en casa,
acompañados de espinaca salteada, crujiente cebolla morada

but also of vegetarian cooking. The Argentinean capital, to everyone’s disbelief, is now the new paradise for vegetable lovers.
In the last three years, more than fifty vegetarian, vegan and
even raw food restaurants (where none of the vegetables are
cooked), have opened their doors to the public.
One of the most popular of these restaurants is Hierbabuena,
just a few steps from Parque Lezama in San Telmo. What’s so
good about it? Its organic, flavoursome food, capable of converting even the most devout meat-eater. It´s menu is nearly
100% vegetarian, except for one or two dishes such as the
catch of the day or the chicken. Eggs Florentine (ARS 62) are
an excellent starter, by far one of the best in Buenos Aires: two
poached eggs with Hollandaise sauce on homemade bread,
served with stir-fried spinach, crunchy red onion and mushrooms. Addictive. Another great choice is the hearty, hot and
original roasted tomato and goats cheese tart tatin (ARS 49),
ideal for sharing.

brotes de quínoa y cebolla morada.
Ojo con su suculento brunch los fines de semana –con un menú de cinco tiempos– y su creativa carta de jugos: son más de treinta opciones distintas –con
limonadas, smoothies y licuados– en las que destaca el juice fresh (32 pesos),
una sorprendente y fresca combinación de jugo de pomelo, naranja, manzana y

For the main course, one of the must-try dishes is the ravioli
made from quinoa flour (ARS 69) which is stuffed with delicious smoked beetroot and goat’s cheese, smothered in tomato sauce and rocket leaves. You can also choose from risottos,
quesadillas and curries, but if you fancy yourself more of a vegan, don´t think twice and go straight for the mushroom burger
(ARS 65): One of the menu´s classic dishes which comes with
green leaves, tomatoes, quinoa spouts and red onion.
Look out for the succulent brunches on the weekend with its
all-season menu and creative drinks menu offering more than
30 lemonades, smoothies and milkshakes. The Fresh Juice
(ARS 32) is a house favourite - a surprisingly fresh combination
of grapefruit, orange, apple and beetroot juice. Good enough
to make you want to go back again and again.

Una dupla poderosa es la que está a cargo de este restorán, que desde hace seis meses
cambió su tradicional ubicación del centro de Santiago hacia una calle residencial de
Vitacura, en una acogedora y ondera casa. Tras los fogones está Carolina Bazán, que
desde hace un buen tiempo está dando qué hablar con sus delicadas preparaciones
con ingredientes de temporada. Todo lo que sale de esta cocina se complementa con
los vinos elegidos con pinzas por la destacada sommelier Rosario Onetto. Y aunque la
carta cambia todo el tiempo según lo que hay en el mercado, hay dos platos que se han
mantenido y con razones de sobra: el raviole solar, que envuelve una yema de huevo
lista para romperse; y el sabrosísimo ragú de cordero con pasta casera.
A very capable couple manage this restaurant which moved six months ago from its
traditional location in Santiago centre to a welcoming and cosy house on a residential
street in Vitacura. Carolina Bazán is the woman behind the kitchen whose delicate
dishes made with seasonal ingredients have been causing a stir for quite some time.
All of her food is complimented by wine cherry picked by the distinguished sommelier
Rosario Onetto. Although the menu constantly changes according to what the market has to offer at that time, there are two dishes which are always on offer for many
reasons: the solar ravioli which is covers an egg yolk, ready to break; and the exquisite
lamb ragout served with freshly made pasta.

Debutó en televisión a los catorce años haciendo el papel de “La Feña” en
la serie juvenil Amango. El personaje tuvo tanto éxito, que llegó a tener un
programa propio. A siete años del fenómeno y grabando un nuevo programa,
hoy está a punto de lanzar su primer disco solista, con el que pretende ser
valorada en la música y eliminar de una vez por todas los prejuicios que
generó su famoso personaje.
She made her television debut when she was 14 years old in the role of “La
Feña” in the teen series Amango. The character was such a success that she
even had her own show. Seven years after this success and currently shooting
a new show, she’s about to release her first solo album, with which she aims
to be appreciated in the music world and get rid, once and for all, of the
prejudices created by her famous character

Cuando salía del concierto de Shakira en el Movistar Arena, Denise contestó un llamado de un número desconocido. “Aló, Denise. Te avisamos que fuiste seleccionada para Amango, la nueva
serie juvenil de Canal 13”, le dijo un encargado de producción.
Entonces, ella no mostró ningún tipo de entusiasmo. Llegó a su
casa y sin darle mucha importancia le pidió a sus papás que la
acompañaran a la primera reunión. Estaba convencida de que
–al igual que las veces en que fue empaquetadora, garzona y
copera–, su nuevo trabajo sería sólo un medio para pagarse sus
vacaciones. Pero se equivocaba.
Just as she was exiting a Shakira concert at Movistar Arena, Denise received a call from an unknown number. “Hello, Denise. We
wanted to let you know that you were chosen to be in the cast of
Amango, the newest teen series of Canal 13”, a production manager told her. At that moment, she didn’t show any kind of enthusiasm. She arrived home and without giving it much thought, she
asked her parents if they would go with her to the first meeting.
She was convinced that – just like other odd jobs she had hadher latest would only be a means to pay for her holidays. But she
was wrong.
—¿Por qué crees que el personaje de “La Feña” tuvo tanto
éxito?
—Yo creo que nadie se imaginaba que una niña tan chica como
yo se iba a tomar las cosas tan en serio. Hice una construcción
del personaje tan profunda que resultó creíble. No era fácil hacer que la gente quisiera a alguien tan insoportable. La Feña era
súper arribista y como estudié en un colegio exclusivo, convivía
con esa realidad. Pero yo era muy distinta. Entonces tomé a la
Feña como un juego de observar y descubrir ese mundo en el
que nunca me sentí cómoda. Y funcionó.
—Why do you think that the “La Feña” character was so successful?
—I think that nobody believed that a girl as young as me would
take things so seriously. I made a construction of the character
that was so deep, it ended up being believable. It wasn’t easy to
make people love someone so insufferable. La Feña was a big
social climber and as I was studying at an exclusive school, I was
familiar with that environment. But I was very different. So, I took
the character of La Feña as a way to observe and discover that
world I’d never really been comfortable in. And it worked.

—¿Ha sido un problema que siempre te relacionen con ese personaje?
—Lo que pasa es que La Feña cuando tuvo su programa propio
le hablaba directamente a la cámara, la gente llamaba por teléfono para decidir qué quería que pasara, se generaba una conexión
muy fuerte con la audiencia. Era inevitable que me relacionaran
con ella, porque mucha gente no tiene la capacidad de ver más allá
de lo que la televisión muestra. En un momento no podía sentarme
a conversar con alguien sin que esa persona tuviese un prejuicio
en contra mía.
—¿Crees que fue muy alto el costo de ese éxito a sus catorce
años?
—Todo trae consecuencias, pero no me arrepiento de nada. Fueron
las circunstancias. Partí trabajando muy chica, entonces mis amigas me invitaban a salir y yo no podía, porque tenía que trabajar
de siete a siete y no todas entendían eso. Me fui separando de las
cosas que no me hacían bien y a la vez acercando a las personas
que más quiero. Tengo muy buenas amigas, una familia que me
apoya y hago lo que me gusta. No se puede pedir más en la vida.
La reinvención musical
Amango se acabó en el año 2008 y El Blog de La Feña en 2009.
Denise había repletado escenarios en todo Chile junto al grupo
musical inspirado en la serie, vendió miles de discos y actuó en
el Festival de Viña del Mar. Llevaba años sin vacaciones, no había
estudiado nada y pensó que necesitaba un tiempo para sí misma.
Entonces tomó un avión y se fue sola a Argentina a tomar un curso de canto y teatro. Cuando volvió, además de protagonizar dos
largometrajes (El Limpiapiscinas y El Babysitter) quiso consolidar
una carrera musical.
—¿Cuándo empezaste a tomar más en serio la música?
—Siempre se me ocurrían melodías y pensaba que con ellas podía
hacer alguna canción. De a poco empezó a evolucionar mi imaginación y ya no escuchaba en mi mente sólo las melodías, sino los
arreglos, los cortes, incluso visualizaba el show. Quería hacer algo
con todo eso, pero no sabía cómo, porque no sabía tocar instrumentos.
—¿Cómo se le dio forma a este proyecto?
—Me costó mucho llegar a alguien que me escuchara y me tomara
en serio. Me juntaba con productores que me decían: “No, eso que
tú piensas no va a servir, el R&B es muy repetido, no funciona”.
Todos tenían sus propias ideas y querían que yo fuese como una
máquina que las reprodujera. Y ahí llegué a Bastián Herrera, que
ahora es mi pareja, que entendió lo que quería y supo arreglar mis
canciones, mis letras y hacer un trabajo muy bonito que mantiene
el concepto que buscaba.
—Haces R&B contemporáneo y pop bailable, ¿qué diferencia tus
canciones de las miles que hay en el mundo con este estilo?
—Primero mi voz es muy característica. La he pulido y tiene un
timbre especial. Además soy una mujer latina y orgullosamente
chilena, y que haga mi música es algo ya distinto en sí.

—Has it been a problem for you to always be associated with
that character?
—What happens is that, when La Feña had her own show, she
spoke directly to the camera and people would call to decide
what they wanted to happen, which created a very strong connection with the audience. Inevitably, people related me to her
because many of them don’t have the capacity to see beyond
what television shows them. At one point, I couldn’t sit down
and have a conversation with someone without them having a
prejudice against me.
—Do you think that the cost of that fame was too high when you
were fourteen?
—Everything has its consequences, but I have no regrets. It was
the circumstances. I started working when I was very young, so my
friends would invite me to parties and I couldn’t go because I had
to work 12 hours a day and not all of them would understand that.
I started letting go of things that weren’t good for me and at the
same time, I started getting close to the people I loved the most.
I have very good friends, a family that supports me and I’m doing
what I love. What else can I ask from life?
Musical reinvention
Amango ended in 2008 and El Blog de La Feña in 2009. Denise
had filled stages throughout Chile with the band inspired in the
teen series, sold thousands of albums and performed at the Viña
del Mar International Festival. She had spent years without taking
a holiday, hadn’t studied a thing and she thought she needed time
for herself. So, Denise jumped on a plane and left for Argentina
by herself and enrolled on a drama and singing course. When she
returned, apart from starring in two films (El Limpiapiscinas and El
Babysitter), her aim was to consolidate her music career.
—When did you start taking music more seriously?
—I would always think up tunes and I thought that I could make
a song with them. Little by little, my imagination started evolving
and not only was I hearing the melody in my head, but also the
arrangements, the cuts; I even visualized the show. I wanted to
do something with that, but I didn’t know how because I didn’t
know how to play any instruments.
—How did you start shaping this project?
—It was really hard to find someone that listened to me and
took me seriously. I would meet with producers that would say
“No, what you want won’t take off, R&B has been done time
and time again, it won’t work”. Everyone had their own ideas
and they wanted me to be a sort of machine that would reproduce them. That’s when I got to Bastián Herrero, who is now
my partner, and who understood what I wanted and figured
out how to arrange my songs, my lyrics and did a great job that
stays true to the concept I was aiming for.
—¿Por qué utilizas el spanglish en sus letras?
—Estudié en un colegio donde tuve todo en inglés hasta octavo básico y la música
que escuchaba era en inglés. Y cuando empecé a hacer letras y melodías estas me
fueron llevando a ese idioma. No fue forzado. Además los chilenos somos muy mestizos, no tenemos mucha identidad y no me gusta quejarme de eso. Mi manera de
afrontar la vida es aceptarlo y decir: “Ok, soy multicultural, sé inglés, estudié en un
colegio inglés, soy chilena, soy orgullosa y voy a sacarle partido a todo eso”.
—¿Cuándo saldrá tu primer disco?
—Está en camino y me ha costado mucho, porque todos los recursos han sido de mi
propio esfuerzo. Ahora estoy trabajando en una serie y la plata que gano en el canal
se vuela, no la veo, también vendí mi auto y todo eso se ha ido a este proyecto, porque es mi apuesta. Pero ya está todo grabado, son once canciones y ahora estamos
en lo último, la carátula, el arte y cosas técnicas.
—¿De qué trata Chico Reality, la nueva serie en la que trabajas?
—Es una comedia sobre un chico (interpretado por el actor Fernando Godoy) que
estuvo en un reality hace diez años y que sigue pensando que es famoso. Mi personaje es una chica farandulera que quiere ser conocida y poco menos que casarse con
Daddy Yankee, es la coprotagonista y es alguien muy distinta a mí.
—¿Qué opinas de ese mundo que parodia esta nueva serie?
—En realidad no veo nada de tele, así que tuve que investigar mucho para nutrirme
de la farándula. Pero no tengo una opinión al respecto, porque no me interesa. Me
entretengo en otras cosas, leo, ando en patines, no pierdo el tiempo viendo algo que
siento que no me aporta.

—You make contemporary R&B and dance-pop. What makes
your songs different to the other thousand songs of this same
style in the world?
—First of all, my voice is very characteristic. I have polished it
and it has a very special ring to it. Besides, I’m a Latin woman
and a proud Chilean, and the fact that I’m making my own music is different in itself.
—Why do you use Spanglish in your lyrics?
—I went to a school where every subject was taught in English
up until the eighth grade, and the music that I listened to was in
English. When I started writing lyrics and melodies, they started
steering me towards that language. It wasn’t something forced.
Besides, Chileans are a mixed race, we don’t have much of an
identity and I don’t like to complain about it. My way to come
to terms with life is to accept it and say: “Ok, I’m multicultural, I
know English, I went to an English-speaking school, I’m Chilean
and proud of it, and I’m going to take advantage of all that.”
—When will you release your first album?
—It’s on its way and it has been really hard, because all the resources for this album have come from my own efforts. I’m currently working on a TV series and the money that I make with it
fades away, I don’t get to see it. I also sold my car and all that money went into this project, because it’s my project. But everything is
already recorded, there are eleven songs and now we’re working
on the final details, the cover, artwork and technical things.
—What is your new show, Chico Reality, about?
— It’s a comedy about a guy (played by actor Fernando Godoy)
that was in a reality show ten years ago and still thinks he’s famous. My character is a star struck girl that craves fame and
wants to marry a famous rap star. She’s the co-star and someone
very different to myself.
—What do you think of this world that is mocked by this new
TV series?
—I actually don’t watch TV at all, so I had to investigate a lot to
learn about Chilean show business. But I don’t have an opinion
about it because I’m not interested in it. I spend my time doing
other things; I read, I go roller-skating, and I don’t waste my time
on things I feel don’t give me anything useful in return.

Since the 60s, several economic bubbles have inflated and burst throughout the
world: from the Japanese Miracle of the 80s, the dot-com companies of the 90s,
through to the emerging markets. Today the trend is for buying stocks that will
generate solid long-term returns. Will there be another bubble?

En cada década hay uno o dos temas dominantes en las inversiones globales, que suelen ser suelo fértil para posibles burbujas, es decir, un conjunto de expectativas optimistas injustificadas sobre un cierto activo financiero, ya sea un commodity,
acción o bono. El término burbuja, de hecho, es muy gráfico en
este sentido: una estructura frágil, con volumen y consistencia
sólo compuesta de aire en vez de un material sólido. Y aunque
parezca muy fácil hablar e identificar esta anomalía en retrospectiva, la realidad es que descubrir una burbuja antes de que
explote es una tarea, a lo menos, desafiante.
Every decade there are one or two dominant trends on the
global investment market, and they usually provide fertile
ground for the growth of bubbles. That is to say, a series of
unjustified optimistic forecasts around a particular financial
asset, be it a commodity, share or bond. The term ‘bubble’, in
fact, is the perfect metaphor: a fragile structure whose volume
and substance is comprised of air instead of solid material. Although it might seem easy to talk about and identify this phenomenon in hindsight, the reality is that discovering bubbles
before they burst is a real challenge.
En 1960 la manía estuvo en las acciones Nifty 50, cincuenta acciones large cap (de gran tamaño) que tenían la fama de ser
sólidas en su crecimiento. Su performance durante los sesentas fue cerca de un 100%, pero durante los setentas su comportamiento fue deplorable. Dado el impresionante avance de
la inflación esa década, la nueva moda se instauró en los activos
“duros” o “reales”, lo que finalmente se tradujo en un crecimiento exponencial en el precio del oro. En los ochentas el tema fue
el milagro japonés. Esto no sólo lo podemos ver en la película
Blade Runner, que predecía que el país asiático superaría económicamente a Estados Unidos, sino también en la bolsa de Tokio,
que subió más de 800% en dólares durante esos diez años. En
la década siguiente, los noventa, la obsesión se apoderó de las
acciones tecnológicas y esa exuberante irracionalidad llamada
empresa “dot com”, que en muchos casos no ofrecía nada, sólo
un portal o una idea que, en algún momento remoto en el tiempo daría dividendos de una manera que ni los dueños sabían
cómo. Con el cambio de milenio, la burbuja tecnológica explotó
y de las cenizas de la crisis asiática fuimos testigos del entusiasmo por las acciones chinas, los mercados emergentes y los
commodities en general.
In 1960, there was a craze for Nifty 50 stocks, the fifty largecap stocks that were famous for their buy-and-hold growth.
Their performance throughout the 60s was almost 100%, but
during the 70s they nosedived. Given the irrepressible advance
of inflation during the 70s, the fashion changed to “hard” or
“real” assets, which eventually led to an exponential increase
in the price of gold. The 80s became famous for the Japanese
Miracle. This can be seen not only in the film Blade Runner,
which predicted that Japan would overtake the USA economically, but also in the results of the Tokyo stock exchange which
grew over 800% in dollar terms during that ten-year period.
The following ten years, the 90s, were characterised by the euphoria surrounding shares in high-tech ‘dot-com’ companies
that in many cases didn’t have anything to offer; just a homepage or an idea that, at some far off point in the future, would
pay off shareholders’ investments in ways that not even the
companies’ owners were sure of. After the dawn of the 21st
Century, the dot-com bubble burst and from the ashes of the
Asian Crisis we bore witness to the hunger for Chinese stocks,
the emerging markets and commodities in general.
El boom de las acciones
de alta calidad
Esta década, la producción de utilidades ha sido un tema recurrente y se candidatea para ser la nueva moda. En resumidas
cuentas, la tesis llama a comprar acciones que tengan una sólida
generación de beneficios a lo largo de un tiempo considerable.
Todo lo contrario a creer de forma ciega en los flujos futuros
sin sustento en el presente. Este tipo de títulos accionarios se
pueden definir como aquellas que tienen la menor volatilidad en
sus ingresos y que pasan una serie de test financieros, entre los
que destaca una sólida producción de caja y bajos cambios en
el apalancamiento financiero o deuda entre ciclos contractivos
–como una crisis– y expansivos.
Prueba de esta tesis es que el índice S&P 500 Diviend Aristocrats, el cual sigue cincuenta acciones con un récord importante
en el crecimiento en sus dividendos, ha rentado casi un 210%,
desde el peor punto de la crisis sub prime, versus el 144,16% de
ganancias del mercado en general (S&P 500).

The high-quality stocks boom
These days, the profit-making has become a recurrent theme
and is one of the candidates for becoming the new ‘in thing’ for
investors. Put briefly, the idea is to buy stocks that show solid
long-term revenue generation. The exact opposite of blindly
believing in future increases that have no solid basis in present
conditions. This kind of stock can be defined as making low-volatility returns and passing a series of financial tests, including
solid cash flow and minimal changes in leverage or debt during
economic contractions -like crises- or expansions.
Hay una serie de explicaciones de por qué las acciones de “alta
calidad” están teniendo una performance superior al mercado.
Dentro de estas se pueden nombrar, primero la “diversificación”.
Multinacionales como Procter & Gamble o WalMart no están expuestas a una sola economía, sino que venden sus productos en
prácticamente todo el globo. De esta forma tienen una protección contra el alza de impuesto o cambios en las regulaciones de
los países desarrollados.
En segundo lugar está la “resiliencia al ciclo económico”. Seis
trimestres consecutivos de contracción en el producto de la eurozona han impulsado a los inversionistas a comprar acciones
de empresas que son relativamente inmunes al ciclo económico,
es decir, que puedan generar ingresos en épocas de vacas flacas
y gordas. Y, por último, “la solidez del balance”: Las compañías
que gozan niveles de cajas gigantescas tienen la habilidad de
devolver dinero a sus inversionistas a través de dividendos o
recompras de acciones, lo cual les da un gran atractivo en un
mundo con finanzas públicas tambaleantes y bonos en niveles
altísimos que ofrecen muy bajo retorno.
¿Nueva burbuja?
La decisión pareciera ser fácil, pero el gran problema con estas
acciones es que son escasas: sólo un 15% de las compañías europeas se espera que tengan retornos mayores al 8% o más en el
mediano plazo, comparado a más de un 40% de las que se veían
al principio del milenio. De hecho, del índice FTSE World (índice
bursátil que reúne a compañías de todo el mundo) sólo el 2% de
las compañías cumplen el criterio buscado: una de las menores
proporciones en los últimos veinte años.
¿Habrá oportunidades para subirse a este carro o estamos llegando tarde? A juzgar por el ánimo general de los inversionistas, aún
hay tiempo. Hay que recordar que los mercados alcistas nacen en
el pesimismo, maduran en el escepticismo y mueren en la euforia.
Y de eufórico el mercado de las acciones aún no tiene nada.

Proof of this idea is seen in the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats
index, which follows fifty stocks with decent records in growth
of returns and which has increased by almost 210% since the
lowest point of the sub-prime mortgage crisis, compared with
144.16% for the market in general (S&P 500).
There are several explanations as to why the high-quality stocks
are doing so well compared to the rest of the market. These
include, firstly, “diversification”. Multinationals like Procter &
Gamble or WalMart are not exposed to just one economy, but
sell their products almost the world over. Therefore, they are
more protected against rising taxes or changes in regulations in
developed countries.
Secondly comes a company’s “resistance to economic cycles”.
Six consecutive quarters of contraction in Euro zone production
have led to investors buying stocks in companies which are relatively immune to the effects of economic cycles, i.e. companies
that can make money in the good times and the bad. The final
factor is companies’ “strong balance sheets”. Companies which
enjoy huge cash flows are able to return money to investors via
dividends or stock buyback, which is very attractive in a world
where public finance is unstable and bonds are expensive and
offer low returns.
A New Bubble?
The decision for investors seems an easy one, but the big problem with these stocks is that they are few and far between: only
15% of European companies can hope for returns above 8% in
the medium-term, compared to over 40% at the turn of the millennium. In fact, of the FTSE World index (which follows companies from all over the world), only 2% of companies meet
the required criteria: one of the lowest percentages in the last
twenty years.
Can we still get in, or have we arrived too late for the party?
Judging by the general attitude of investors, there is still time.
We have to remember that bull markets are born out of pessimism, mature in scepticism and are killed off by euphoria. And
there doesn’t seem to be much euphoria on global markets
these days.

Ocho documentales, ocho estrenos, ocho ciudades. De eso se
trata Miradoc, un programa que busca descentralizar este género
en el país y desarrollar nuevas audiencias.
Eight documentaries, eight premieres, eight cities. That’s the
premise of Miradoc, a programme which aims to decentralise
the genre in Chile by moving away from the capital, Santiago
and develop interest in new audiences.

Una pequeña sala de cine de un video
club de Chillán ha sido la prueba de
los buenos resultados de Miradoc,
un programa que busca descentralizar los documentales en el país y
que desde abril realiza un estreno
mensual a lo largo de Chile. Ante la
incógnita de si los asistentes pagarían
por ver documentales en una sala con
una veintena de butacas donde suelen exhibirse ciclos de cines gratuitos,
la repuesta fue positiva. Y pese a que
ya van en el tercer estreno, aún siguen
proyectando los dos primeros debido
al éxito que han cosechado.
A small screening room in a video club in Chillán
has been testament to the success of Miradoc, a
programme which aims to decentralise documentary film making in Chile and that, starting in
April, will show one premiere per month in different regions across the country. At first, the group
was unsure as to whether people would pay to
see documentaries in a screening room with
twenty-odd seats where films are usually shown for free, but the response
has so far been positive. Despite the
fact that the programme is now into
its third premiere, the first two are still
being shown due to popular demand.
“We thought Chillán would be just another location but it has ended up being
one of the biggest successes”, says Flor
Rubina, one of the Executive Directors
of Chiledoc, an organisation dedicated to
the marketing and distribution of nationally
produced documentary films and which also
sponsors Miradoc, backed as it is by the Audiovisual Fund of the National Council for Culture
and Artes (CNCA).
“Chillán era un dato y terminó siendo el
más exitoso”, dice Flor Rubina, una de las
directoras ejecutivas de Chiledoc, una organización dedicada a la difusión y distribución de documentales chilenos y que es la promotora del programa, que cuenta con el apoyo del Fondo Audiovisual del
Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (CNCA).

más en términos artísticos y de reconocimientos, tanto nacionales como internacionales, es difícil verlo”, cuenta Paola Castillo,
también directora ejecutiva de la organización.
Y destaca que junto con la distribución, una capa que subyace al
proyecto es la formación de audiencias, ya que lo más importante
–asegura– es invitar a la gente a cambiar un paradigma: “Hay un
tema de fondo. La gente cuando piensa en la palabra documental
lo asocia a lo que ve en la televisión, como tipo reportaje o una
cosa más bien educativa. No se lo imaginan como películas posibles de ir a ver una sala”, agrega Rubina.
Los documentales
Para comenzar a cambiar el paradigma, el programa contempla exitosas cintas de importantes realizadores nacionales, y el
criterio de selección fue básicamente, explica Castillo, la calidad
y la emoción. “Elegimos un conjunto de películas que por una
parte tuvieran mérito artístico, pero que también fueran películas que trabajaran un tema que interesara emocionalmente a las
personas”, precisa Castillo. Para Rubina la clave es que hay una
diversidad de temáticas y de estilo, que permite un programa
bastante amplio.
El proyecto incluye los documentales Las mujeres del pasajero de
Patricia Correa y Valentina Mac-Pherson; Sibila de Teresa Arre-

She also points out that aside from distribution, another hidden
layer to the project is audience building. This is because the most
important thing –she explains- is inviting people to take part in a
paradigm shift: “There’s a certain underlying theme here. When
people think of ‘documentaries’ they associate them with what
they see on television: special reports or education-oriented
projects. They don’t think of them as films to go and see at the
cinema”, Rubina adds.
Documentaries
In order to put this paradigm shift in motion, the programme has
included successful films from important Chilean directors, and
the selection criteria were, basically, quality and emotion, says
Castillo. “We chose a set of films that were, on the one hand,
artistically accomplished, but that were also films which dealt
with themes people find emotionally stimulating”, says Castillo.
Rubina considers the diversity of themes and styles to be the key
to success, lending the programme a broader scope.

El programa también contempla que el director o un miembro del
equipo viaje a las distintas ciudades. “Ha sido súper interesante
cómo ha ayudado a crear audiencia, porque obviamente la gente
va mucho más cuando está el realizador o algún personaje, pero
también es interesante porque tocan temas”, explica Castillo.
Los estrenos son simultáneos en ocho de las 10 salas y la idea
es que estén durante dos semanas en cartelera. Sin embargo, el
programa ha tenido la flexibilidad para estudiar cuáles son las
particularidades de cada ciudad y cada sala ha ido definiendo los
horarios y los días. “Y como cualquier estreno comercial, si les fuera súper bien podría seguir una tercera semana”, agrega.
Las salas
Para el desarrollo del programa, Chiledoc escogió 10 salas –siete
en regiones y tres en la capital– bajo el criterio de que se tratase
de lugares que fueran más allá de los grandes complejos característicos y que permitieran abrir nuevos nichos. “Nos asociamos
a salas que ya tenían cierta experiencia, ya sea vía festivales o
muestras culturales, en una forma de potenciar también el trabajo
de ellos”, cuenta Castillo.

The programme also intends to send a director or documentary participant to each of the premiere cities. “It has been a
very interesting way of increasing audience numbers, because
people are obviously more interested in going to the show if
the director or a person from the film is there, but it is also interesting to hear what they have to say”, says Castillo.
The premieres are shown simultaneously in eight of the
ten screening rooms and the plan is that the films are to be
screened for two weeks. Nevertheless, the programme has
been flexible enough to take the individual situation of each
city into account and each screening room has set its own
times and dates. “And just like a commercial premiere, if the
screening goes well, there’s nothing to stop them showing the
film for another week”, she adds.
The Screening Rooms
When setting up the programme, Chiledoc chose 10 screens
–seven in regions across Chile and three in the capital- according to the criteria of being rooms with an intimate and less
commercial atmosphere than a typical cinema, which allows
the group to find new niche audiences. “We tried to find locations with a certain amount of experience, ones that had put on
film festivals or cultural shows, hopefully helping them to consolidate the good work they were already doing”, says Castillo.
That was how they settled on the final list of Teatro Estibadores

“Nosotros queríamos potenciar las regiones”, dice Rubina, y destaca que “las expectativas eran un misterio,
pero sabíamos que iban a partir bajas, porque estamos
instalando una nueva oferta en el público”.
Pero lo bueno, aseguran, es que han ido subiendo y
cada película ha ido aumentando en espectadores.
“Es un camino súper lento y a largo plazo”, dice Castillo, ya que se trata de partir desde cero: “Cambiar
paradigmas, instalar lugares nuevos, consolidar cosas que estaban aisladas y darles un circuito”.
Para Rubina, uno de los objetivos que se plantearon en un principio ya se cumplió en el caso de
Chillán: “El dueño de esa sala va a seguir mostrando documentales independiente de nosotros o no. Eso se instaló”.

“We wanted to strengthen the industry in
Chile’s regions”, Rubina says. She also points
out that they “were unsure as to what to expect,
but we knew we shouldn‘t expect much, as we are
offering something completely new to the public”.
What is encouraging, they say, is that the numbers
have been steadily increasing and each screening has a larger audience. “It’s a very slow
road and we are thinking in the long term”,
says Castillo, since they began from zero: “We
are hoping to change paradigms, set up new
screens, strengthen areas which were isolated and
increase publicity”.
For Rubina, one of the main goals established at
the beginning of the programme has now been
met in the case of Chillán: “The owner of that
screen will continue to show documentaries
from now on, whether we begin another programme or not. It has really taken off”.

before they embark on a journey with no return ticket. A
camera records the passing of time, the feeling of abandonment and the solitude the residents feel. The film was
part of the official selection for several festivals such as
DokLepizg 2012 and the International Documentary Film
Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) 2012.

exhibidos en Europa como salvajes en un zoológico humano bajo la autorización del Estado chileno, que no hizo

documental en Pintacanes 2011 y Festival de Cine Recobrado 2012.

cinta. El documental obtuvo financiamiento del Fondo Internacional ITVS.

En la década de los 80 una serie de asesinatos, violaciones y robos desataron una sicosis colectiva en la V región.
Este documental revive la investigación del caso de los
sicópatas de Viña del Mar a través de cuatro personajes
claves. La cinta recibió el premio a la mejor película en
la XXIV versión del Festival Internacional de Cine de Viña
del Mar.

It’s the 19th Century, and a group of natives from Tierra del
Fuego are captured to be shown in Europe as savages in a
human zoo, under the direct authorisation of the Chilean
government which does nothing to stop it. The documentary
received the Audience’s Choice Award and a Special Mention at the Fidocs 2012 Festival, and won Best Documentary
at the Pintacanes 2011 and Festival de Cine Recobrado 2012
festivals.

being included in a social housing project. But the process
will not be easy due to the lack of resources, the problems
with construction, the impact of the rains and a community which rejects them. The film documents the characters’

from the International ITVS Fund.

Pena de Muerte (Death Penalty), by Tevo Díaz
During the 80s, a series of murders, rapes and robberies
caused mass hysteria in the Region of Valparaíso. This documentary revives the investigation into the psychopaths of
Viña del Mar through the eyes of four key figures. The film
won the Best Film prize at the XXIV Festival Internacional
de Cine in Viña del Mar.

más los que se arriesgan practicando este emocionante deporte.
¿La clave? Bajar lo más rápido posible.
More and more people are taking to risking their lives with this
exciting sport, racing at speeds of up to 60km/hour on a route
riddled with nature´s obstacles. The aim of the game? To pedal
downhill as fast as you can.

Adrenalina y velocidad. Esas son dos palabras que repiten quienes practican downhill, un deporte extremo que consiste en una
prueba de descenso rápido pedaleando, en la que varios competidores luchan por ser el más veloz en un camino tapizado de
obstáculos –como piedras, árboles, troncos o barro–, que deben
ser superados para ganarle al cronómetro. Y al resto, por cierto.
Para practicarlo, hay que ser capaz de controlar la bicicleta a altas
velocidades y mantener el equilibrio en todo momento; también
de manejar los nervios y estar preparado para cualquier cosa que
se pueda cruzar en el camino. La capacidad física es clave, ya que
como los cambios de ritmo son continuos, se necesita una gran
resistencia para enfrentar este tipo de carreras. La concentración
también es fundamental: un pequeño obstáculo mezclado con un
exceso de confianza puede hacer caer al competidor.
¿Dónde se practica este deporte? Por lo general en terrenos de
gran dificultad y muy inclinados, para que se puedan realizar
descensos a alta velocidad, además de saltos y sorteo de obstáculos. Pueden ser circuitos tanto naturales como artificiales,
creados para realizar una competición. Los saltos pueden ser
de entre cinco y veinte metros de altura, siempre junto a árboles, piedras, pendientes muy pronunciadas y curvas que parecen imposibles. En el caso de los pistas creadas, se incluyen
piedras artificiales y hundimientos de terreno para hacer aún
más complicadas las carreras.
To practice this extreme sport you must be able to control a
bike at high speed and keep your balance at all times, keep
calm and be prepared for anything to cross your path. Physical fitness is key as your pace continuously changes; you must
have high stamina to cope with this type of race. Concentration is also extremely important: something small in your path
combined with over confidence can make the competitor fall
off his bike.
Where can you do it? It´s generally practiced on very uneven
and steep terrain so you can dive down at high speeds and
often contains a few jumps and an array of obstacles. They can
be natural or man-made race courses, created for competition
purposes. The jumps range from 5 to 20 metres high, always
amongst trees, rocks, very steep inclines and seemingly impossible curves in the road. The man-made race courses include
artificial rocks and potholes to make the course even more
complicated.
Santiago offers various places to practise downhill. One of the
most well known is San Cristóbal Hill with its Pista cuatro y medio (Track 4.5). You can also speed down the snowy inclines of
Valle Nevado, Farellones, Til-Til or on the Cerro Chena.

Adrenalin and speed form the mantra of those who practice
downhill, an extreme sport which consists of various cyclists
racing each other at high speed dodging the many obstacles
woven into their path such as stones, trees, trunks or mud in
order to beat the clock, and each other, lest we forget.

En Santiago hay varios sitios para practicar downhill. Una de las
pistas más conocidas es la del cerro San Cristóbal, llamada “Pista
cuatro y medio”. También se pueden realizar descensos en lugares como Valle Nevado, Farellones, Til-Til o el Cerro Chena.
Eso sí, para realizar este deporte es necesario tener una serie
de implementos. Lo principal es una bicicleta especial para descensos, es decir, con marcos de aluminio –porque es un material
muy resistente–, de titanio o de carbono; una horquilla telescópica de 203 milímetros para la suspensión frontal y un sistema
de frenos hidráulico en ambas ruedas, con discos de 203 milímetros –los más grandes– para mayor ventilación y potencia.
Además, cambios de diez velocidades y una guía para que la
cadena no se salga. Los neumáticos dependerán de si la pista es
artificial, de polvo o barro.
¿Precios? Aquí está la mala noticia: es un deporte caro. Una bicicleta de este tipo cuesta entre tres y seis millones de pesos. Eso
sin considerar que se le debe realizar una mantención cada dos
meses –cuyo valor rodea los treinta mil pesos– y, por supuesto,
el equipo adecuado: casco integral, rodilleras, un peto –traje que
incluye protector de columna, pecho y costillas, hombreras, coderas y muñequera–, pantalón con acolchado, guantes, antiparras y
zapatillas especiales, con fijaciones que se peguen a la bicicleta o
de plataforma para que se adhieran al pedal. La inversión total de
la vestimenta bordea los cuatrocientos mil pesos.
Suena de locos, pero lo cierto es que aún cuando es un deporte
de alto riesgo y bastante costoso, la carrera contra el reloj y la
adrenalina que garantizan el downhill cada día gana más adeptos en Chile.

You do, of course, need to have the right gear. The most important is a bicycle built with downhill racing in mind which
has a frame made of aluminium - as it’s a very resistant material – or titanium or carbon; a 203mm telescopic front suspension fork and a hydraulic break system on both wheels, with a
full disc of 203mm (the largest size) for better ventilation and
minimal drag. They also have 10 gears and a chain guide so that
it doesn’t come off. There are different tyres available for different terrains – whether it’s a man-made course, a dust track
or muddy terrain.
How much does it all cost? Here´s the bad news: It’s a very
expensive sport. These types of bikes cost between CLP
3,000,000 and CLP 6,000,000. That’s not including maintenance costs which need to be carried out every 2 months and
costs around CLP 30,000… Then there´s the correct equipment
you must have: special helmet, knee pads, a special suit which
has an in-built spinal, chest and rib support, shoulder pads, elbow guards and wristbands, padded trousers, gloves, goggles,
special trainers with grips which stick to the bike so that they
stay on the pedal. All of this could cost around CLP 400,000.
It sounds ridiculous, but there’s no doubt that even though it’s
a high-risk and fairly expensive sport, the race against the clock
and the adrenalin that downhill guarantees is attracting an increasing number of followers in Chile.

Queens of the Stone Age
“…Like clockwork”
Seis años perduró la sequía creativa de Josh Homme, la voz y el
líder de Queens of the Stone Age. Sequía que acaba violentamente con un aguacero de proporciones como es “…Like clockwork”,
el sexto disco de la banda californiana. El álbum en cuestión, se
convirtió en su primer número uno en Billboard.
Con ilustres invitados, como el líder de Foo Fighters, Dave Grohl, dejando su imborrable rastro en las baterías de cinco temas, y
Elton John tocando piano en “Fairweather friends”, “…Like clockwork” sembró altas expectativas.
Expectativas que fueron cumplidas. Seguro su férrea fanaticada
está feliz con el nuevo material; hay rock, groove, melodías sólidas
y ese sonido crudo propio de Queens of the Stone Age. Se trata
de un trabajo que avanza, que se mueve sin estancarse en el pasado y que revela facetas refrescantes. “My god is the sun”, el primer
sencillo, resume quizás la suma de esa fuerza inconfundible con
ideas nuevas, que procuran matizar y distribuir los elementos con
cautela, sin sobrecargar nunca las composiciones. La madurez se
deja notar en los detalles.

Until now, Josh Homme, lead vocalist and frontman of Queens
of the Stone Age, had been immersed in something of a creative hibernation for six years. That hibernation was violently
shattered by the bucket-of-cold-water-to-the-face which is “...
Like clockwork”, the Californian band’s sixth studio album. The
album has just become Queens of the Stone Age’s first Billboard number one.
With a star-studded soundtrack, featuring the Foo Fighters’
Dave Grohl, who chipped in with his unforgettable trademark
drumming on five tracks, and Elton John, playing piano on
“Fairweather friends”, “Like clockwork” had everyone in the industry on tenterhooks.
All expectations have been met. Of course, hard-core followers
are pleased with the new material; there’s rock, groove, solid
melodies and that particular raw sound unique to Queens of
the Stone Age. It’s a dynamic work, moving the band forward,
and includes refreshing new ideas that don’t let them get stuck
in the past. “My god is the sun”, the album’s first single, is perhaps the perfect union of the sum of the group’s unmistakeable strengths with the new ideas, attempting to subtly and
cautiously balance the two without ever overcompensating or
damaging the composition. The band’s maturity is obvious in
the details.

Two Guns
Protagonizada por las superestrellas Mark Wahlberg y Denzel
Washington, Two Guns mezcla acción, crimen y drama al contar
la historia de dos agentes que coinciden investigando el mismo
caso, pero para distintas agencias de seguridad de Estados Unidos. Por cierto, ninguno de los dos personajes –Bobbt Trench de la
DEA (Washington) ni Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg), oficial de inteligencia naval– saben que trabajan como infiltrados dentro de una
banda mexicana que trafica drogas. Y, por supuesto, los conflictos
se desatan entre ambos. Dirigida por el joven Baltasar Kormákur,
la película cuenta con electrizantes escenas de acción y sólidas actuaciones de Wahlberg y Washington, quienes –a fin de cuentas–
son los mayores responsables de sostener la trama de la historia.
Aunque Two Guns no pasará a la historia de las mejores películas
del género, de seguro se tratará de uno de los estrenos más importantes del año entre los fanáticos de los filmes de acción.

a combatir a uno de los lugares más peligrosos donde se desarrolla la guerra de Afganistán. Para escribir la novela, Giordano (1982,
Turín) estuvo entre 2010 y 2012 en ese país
con el ejército italiano y por eso fue capaz de
elaborar con tanto realismo el desértico telón
de fondo donde se desarrolla la historia. Las
penurias y cavilaciones de jóvenes inexpertos –que viven en la guerra su primera gran
prueba vital– son el motor de la trama que
atrapa desde el primer párrafo. Aunque no se
trata de una historia con la misma magia de
La soledad de los números primos, esta nueva
entrega de Giordano es cien por ciento recomendable y ya asoma como uno de los títulos
más importantes del año.
Starring Hollywood heavyweights Mark Wahlberg and Denzel
Washington, Two Guns mixes action, crime and drama in the
story of two US government agents who are assigned to the
same case, by different federal agencies. To make things more
complicated, neither DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington)
nor US Navy Intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg)
knows that the other is working undercover in the same Mexican drug-smuggling gang. Which, of course, means a series of
conflicts erupt between the two men. Young director Baltasar
Kormákur gives us some electrifying action scenes, supported
by solid performances from both Wahlberg and Washington;
although it is the two actors, truth be told, who manage to keep
the audience’s attention. Although Two Guns won’t go down in
history as one of the best of its genre, it is certainly one of the
most important premieres of the year for action film fans.

Paolo Giordano
After the astounding sales of his debut The
Solitude of Prime Numbers, Italian author
Paolo Giordano is back at the top of the charts
with The Human Body: a story of a group of
youngsters who, by a cruel twist of fate, find
themselves fighting on one of the most dangerous fronts in the Afghanistan war. While
researching the book, Giordano (1982, Turin)
spent two years (from 2010 to 2012) in Afghanistan with the Italian army, which is how
he was able to conjure up the desert backdrop
with so much realism. The shortcomings and
fears of inexperienced youths –who are facing
the greatest test of their lives in the war- are
the driving force behind a plot that has you
hooked after the first paragraph. Although
this story doesn’t have the same magic as The
Solitude of Prime Numbers, Giordano’s latest
offering is one hundred per cent recommendable and is already up there among the most
important titles of the year.
