We can’t wait!
When I was attending public school a few years back, I could not wait for school to get started. I loved
the smell of fresh school supplies, enjoyed finding out who my teachers would be, and anticipated
new learning in classes. I knew that school made a difference for who I would become.
I haven’t changed since that time. I am still eager for the start – the fresh wax and paint in the
Commons, new teachers eager and nervous, athletes and band members back for practice and
camps. I still know and deeply believe that school makes a difference in the lives of the nearly 800
students who will walk in the front doors on September 2.
The school may look a bit differently when students and parents enter in coming days. New photos of
students are displayed on the walls, a result of the photography of art teacher Amanda Vogt and
Photo class students. New student artwork is also displayed thanks to Megan Buttke, DDHS Class of
2014. Check it out on the auditorium wall.
Changes are also taking place in classrooms. Perhaps the major change is the development of the
Personalized Blended Learning [PBL] Lab. Teachers in the lab will work with 62 freshmen whose
skills in mathematics and reading need to be strengthened for academic success in high school.
Other students in PBL will be working on credit recovery, while still others will target concepts or
content that needs reinforcement. The program is modelled after similar labs at the highly rated
Reagan High School in Milwaukee.
Parents also have a chance to smell the wax, look at the new artwork, and visit the PBL lab at our
OPEN HOUSE on Tuesday, August 26 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Teachers will be on hand to meet parents
and students as they discuss learning for the new year. Class schedules will be available for parents
and students. Administrators will serve as greeters at the front door. PLEASE – join us for the Open
House.

¡Lo Deseamos!
Cuando asistía la escuela pública hace algunos años, yo deseaba el comienzo de la escuela. Me
encantaba el olor de los artículos nuevos para la escuela, conocer a mis maestros, y anticipaba el
aprendizaje en las clases. Yo sabía que la escuela hizo una diferencia para quien me haría.
Yo no he cambiado desde ese tiempo. Todavía estoy deseoso por el comienzo – la cera y pintura
fresca en la sala de alumnos, maestros nuevos deseosos y nerviosos, atletas y miembros de la
banda en las practicas. Yo todavía sé y creo profundamente que la escuela hace una diferencia en
las vidas de casi 800 estudiantes que caminarán dentro de las puertas en el 2 de septiembre.
La escuela podría aparecer un poco diferente cuando los estudiantes y padres entran en los
siguientes días. Nuevas fotos se verán en los muros, un resultado de la fotografía de la maestra de
arte Amanda Vogt y los estudiantes de la clase de foto. Nuevas obras de arte también se verán
gracias a Megan Buttke, DDHS Clase de 2014. Vealas en el muro del auditorio.
Hay cambios también en los salones de clases. Quizá el cambio mayor es el desarrollo de
Personalized Blended Learning [PBL] Lab (Aprendizaje Mezclado Personalizado). Maestros

Attention Sophomores!
Josten’s will be here on Friday, October 3

Parking Permits
Students who park in the student parking lot
must possess a valid driver’s license as well
as a parking permit. Parking permits can be
purchased in the main office and are
$15.00. Students must have all fees/fines
paid before they can purchase a parking
permit.
As a reminder, only Seniors can park in the
upper lot.

Welcome New Teachers and Staff!
The 2014-2015 school year brings us the opportunity to work with new teachers and staff
members. Each of these new members of the DDHS community brings expertise in a variety
of areas.
Mr. David Copeland will be teaching the American Sign Language class. He is also a
teacher at Wisconsin School for the Deaf.
Mr. Carl Grunewald will be teaching Technical Education courses this year, including
General Woods, Introduction to Engineering and Metal Processes. He is a graduate of UWPlatteville.
Ms. Danielle Horgan is a DDHS alumna who will be teaching Special Education. She is a
graduate of UW-Whitewater.
Mr. Nicholas Marsh will be teaching Physics and Principles of Engineering. He is a recent
graduate of UW-Whiterwater.
Ms. Alexius Metten is a graduate of Marquette University who will be teaching
Meteorology/Oceanography, Biology and Chemistry. She also brings us preparation in
teaching several Project Lead the Way engineering courses.
Ms. Janice Sabin de Medina is a graduate of Marquette University who will be teaching
Spanish I and Spanish II.
Ms. Lisa Schmelz will be teaching Special Education. She is also a professional writer for
several publications and a graduate of UW-Whitewater.
Ms. Kristine Slawson will be teaching Business Education courses at DDHS and Phoenix
Middle School. She will also be coaching volleyball.
Ms. Amy Snodie will be the school Social Worker at DDHS and Phoenix Middle School. She
comes to us after working as a social worker at schools in Minnesota.
Mr. Brett St. Arnauld will be teaching Physical Education courses and Health. He is a
graduate of Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan. He is also coaching varsity football.
Ms. Tori Wille will be our afternoon study hall aide.

El año escolar de 2014-2015 nos trae la oportunidad de trabajar con nuevos maestros y
miembros del personal. Cada uno de estos miembros de la comunidad de DDHS trae
experiencia en una variedad de áreas.

HOMECOMING !
Homecoming week is September 8 – 12. This year’s theme is all about
Disney!! Each class has selected a Disney movie in which to base their floats.
Float building will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday,
of Homecoming week. Times are TBD.

There will be a Junior/Senior boys volleyball game on Monday, September 8 at 5:00
PM. The Powder Puff game will follow at 7:00 PM.
The Homecoming dance will be on Saturday, September 13 from 8 – 11 PM in the gym.
Tickets for the Homecoming dance will be sold the week of Homecoming during lunch.
Cost is $5.00. T-shirts will also be for sale at $10.00 each.

How do students register to take the SAT/ACT?
To register for the SAT or ACT, your child may pick up registration information in the high school
Student Services office. Your student will register online.
Prepare for the ACT exam. You can use the free online prep found at

¿Cómo se registran los estudiantes para tomar el SAT/ACT?
Para inscribirse en el SAT o ACT, su hijo puede recoger la información de registro en la oficina de
Servicios de Estudiante de la escuela Preparatoria. Su estudiante se registrará en línea.
Prepárese para el examen ACT. Puede utilizar la preparación libre por internet encontrada en
www.knowhow2gowisconsin.org o www.studentedge.com. El código de registro de DDHS para
Estudiantes Edge es: RAZGSBZR.

WHAT IS INCLUDED and REQUIRED IN A MEAL?
Breakfast
A school meal includes an entrée, milk, fruit, and juice.
Food Court – Lunch
A school meal includes entrée choice of one of the following:
Line 1: Classic lunch menu entrée
Line 2: Select lunch menu entrée choice of one of the following:
 Hot sandwiches (two sandwiches will be offered)
 Vegetarian Entrée
 Chef Salad (Bigger, Better Salad Bar)
plus one each of the following items; fruit, vegetable, salad, soup, dessert, and milk
A serving of fruit or vegetable must be taken with the meal.
Comet Café - Lunch
A school meal includes entrée choice of one of the following:
 Deli sandwich
 Uncrustable PBJ
plus one each of the following items; fruit, veggies and milk.
A serving of fruit or vegetable must be taken with a meal.
NOTE: School meals costs are subsided by the government so we can offer them to students at a lower
price. If the student does not take a full meal, they will be encouraged to take additional items to
complete the meal or charged the Ala Carte rate the items they chose.
 Breakfast Components are protein-grain(entrée), fruit,,juice, and milk. A meal must contain
at least 3 components of the student’s choosing. A serving of fruit or juice must be taken.
 Lunch Components are protein(entrée), vegetable, fruit, grain source, and milk. A meal must
contain at least 3 components of the student’s choosing, one of the components must be a fruit
or vegetable serving.

Student Meal Accounts
MySchoolBucks is an automated debit account system used for cafeteria sales. Each student has a
specific ID number that is used to account for his or her breakfast and lunch activity. Although
students may pay cash on a daily basis, the system works best when school meal prepayments are
made to cover the cost of future school meals. Prepayments may be made using the current envelope
system at the main office, online at myschoolbucks.com or as a last resort - in line during serving
times. All cash received in Food Court serving lines will be put on the student’s account. Change will
not be given.
Given the volume of activity, we ask that students swipe their student ID cards to use prepaid accounts
during serving times. Students will be asked to leave behind any items they are not able to
purchase using their account or cash, so please be aware of your account balance. Doing so will
reduce the amount of time students spend waiting in line to check out.
Students are always welcome to bring their own lunch to school.
The Delavan-Darien School District has a policy for children unable to pay the full price of meals
served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Applications for free
and reduced meals are accepted throughout the school year. If a household member becomes
unemployed or if the household size changes you may wish to (re)apply. Applications are available in
school buildings or by contacting Kathy Adams 728-2642 ext 4805.
Students participating in the National School Breakfast or Lunch program are entitled to one meal at
the free or reduced price. If an additional meal or extra portions are desired, the student must pay the
cost of the items as described above.
Vending
A variety of beverages and snack items are available in vending machines for cash sales.

Cuentas de Comida del Estudiante
MySchoolBucks es un sistema de la cuenta de débito automático usado para las ventas de la cafetería.
Cada estudiante tiene un número de identificación que se usa para cobrar su comida. Aunque los
estudiantes pueden pagar con dinero efectivo diariamente, el sistema funciona mejor cuando pagos se
hacen por adelantado para cubrir el costo de comida futura. Pagos por adelantado se pueden hacer por
usar el sistema corriente de los sobres en la oficina principal, en línea en myschoolbucks.com o como
último recurso – en línea durante de la hora de servicio. Todo dinero en efectivo recibido en las filas
del Salón de Comida será puesto en la cuenta del estudiante. No habrá cambio disponible.
Debido al volumno de actividad, pedimos qu e los estudiantes usen sus tarjetas de identificación para
usar cuentas pagado por adelantado durante de las horas de servicio. Los estudiantes no podrán
tomar comida que no pueden comprar con su cuenta o dinero efectivo, asi que por favor esté
pendiente del balance de su cuenta. Tal reducirá el tiempo que los estudiantes tendrán que esperar en
fila.
Los estudiantes siempre pueden traer su propio almuerzo a la escuela.
El Distrito Escolar de Delavan-Darien tiene una política para niños que no pueden pagar el precio
debajo del Programa Escolar Nacional de Desayuno y Almuerzo. Se puede solicitar por el año escolar
para comida reducida y gratis. Si un miembro del hogar sea desempleado o si el número del hogar
cambia se puede solicitar de nuevo. Formas están disponibles en las escuelas o por contactar a Kathy
Adams 728-2642 ext 4805.
Los estudiantes que participan en el Programa Escolar Nacional de Desayuno y Almuerzo reciben una
comida en el precio gratis o reducido. Si se desea una comida adicional o más racionales, el estudiante
