Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!
Prayer of the Week
Many More Years
of Grace and Blessing
to Father Don and Sister Raquel
What a joyous celebration of Father Don’s 75th Birthday (July 11) and Sister Raquel’s 50th Birthday (July 10) we
had last Sunday! The Mass of Thanksgiving was full and
alive, and we were even blessed to celebrate a Quinceañera
(15th Birthday) of Ana Gabriela Leon.
I so enjoy serving with Father Don who shows me the
face of Jesus with his smile and friendly love for all God’s
people. He shows so well the fruits of the Holy Spirit:
peace, joy, love, kindness, faithfulness, not to mention how
prayerful he is as he helps us become closer to Jesus. He
has helped me to grow in so many ways as partner in Jesus’
ministry and as friend.
St. Louis priests are not allowed to retire until 75—so
he could retire and take life easy, but he has chosen to continue serving as our full time Associate Pastor. I keep telling him to take more time off—but it does no good.
And what a joy it is to serve with Sister Raquel! She
truly is so full of life and energy and especially love and
concern for us all. We are so blessed by the Holy Spirit
who has given her to us. I am amazed at how many people
she knows so well and takes care of in so many ways. She
has been key to our building up and uniting our Borromeo
Family which is Jesus’ Vision for us. She gets more people
working together than anyone I’ve ever seen. I enjoy her
beautiful smile and joyful eyes as well as her openness and
honesty and gratefulness and collaboration and faith and
friendship. She has, like a good mother, made Borromeo
such a loving home to us all.
We love you, Madre Raquel and Padre
Donaldo, and we thank God for you daily.
And a huge thanks to so many who made the celebration so beautiful and delicious, and to all who came together to honor them!
O God, who show the light of your truth to those
who go astray, so that they may return to the right
path, give all who for the faith they profess are accounted Christians the grace to reject whatever is
contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all
that does it honor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Questions Catholics are Asked
Why do you pray for the dead?
The Bible clearly teaches the rightness of prayers for the
dead in 2 Maccabees (12:40, 42, 44-45): “Then under the
tunic of every one of the dead they found sacred tokens of
the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbids Jews to wear.
And it became clear to all that this was why these men had
fallen. . . . [A]nd they turned to prayer, beseeching that the
sin which had been committed might be wholly blotted
out. . . . For if he were not expecting that those who had
fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous
and foolish to pray for the dead. . . . [H]e made atonement
for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.”
St. Paul teaches this in a similar way: “Otherwise, what do
people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If
the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on
their behalf?” (1 Cor 15:29). This indicates prayer and fasting for the dead. The word baptism often symbolically refers to penances (Mk 10:38-39; Lk 3:16, 12:50). The apostle
Paul also appears to be praying for a dead person, Onesiphorus, in 2 Timothy (1:16-18).
Joke of the Week
While taking her driver’s test, the 16-year-old accidentally put the car into reverse and backed into the building.
After collecting himself, the driving examiner said, “You can
go ahead and finish the test if you like. It’ll be good practice
for the next time.”
She was flabbergasted. “Are you saying I’ve failed?”
Spread the Gospel, the Good News
about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!
Your brother in Jesus,
Father John
Thank You!!! Gracias!!!
Many, many thanks to all of you for a wonderful and complete surprise Birthday party for Sr. Raquel and myself last
Sunday. When I entered church for 11:30 Mass I smelled something delicious cooking and wondered what kind of coffee and donuts we were having after Masses in the cafe. Then I saw some old parishioners from Sacred Heart Parish in
Troy and wondered what they were doing at 11:30 Mass. Then I saw my family gathering in the front benches and figured something special was happening. And, thanks for the $1,430 in gifts that will go into paying for the Mission Trip
to Mexico, which, by the way, was fabulous, and has to become a new annual tradition for our parish. It is so unique
and beneficial. God continue to bless all of you.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!
Are you thinking about becoming Catholic?
Learning to Respond
God works in many different ways. Most of the time, God works through ordinary people and events—a parent, a
friend, a beautiful sunset, a song, an inspiring story. Other times, we hear God’s call during crisis moments or major lifechanges—a birth, an engagement, a sickness, a death. Sometimes, we just have a feeling that something is missing. No
matter what your reason for thinking about becoming Catholic, our hope and prayer is that when God calls, you will respond. (If you’re reading this, you’ve already begun to respond!) One part of the Catholic Church’s mission is to help
people respond to God as best they can. For Christians, initiation and on-going participation in the life of the Church are
the primary responses to God’s call. Through the process of becoming Catholic, we try to help people learn how to respond to that call not just for the moment of baptism but for every day of their lives. The way we learn how to respond
is by actually doing what Catholics do. So the process of becoming Catholic is not so much about learning things as in a
classroom but learning a way of life as an apprentice learns from a master and that master’s community.
Becoming an Apprentice
Becoming Catholic is like an apprenticeship. In the art department of a university I attended, there was a “master potter”
who was the teacher for all the pottery students. But his students didn’t really have classes in a classroom like you would
have at a school. What they did have was a lifestyle, or a discipline, and they all agreed to live by that lifestyle. In their
discipline, the master potter agreed to teach them everything he knew, and the students agreed to watch the potter and follow his example. In a way, they became
his disciples. Every so often, the potter showed them a new skill, like making a tiny
tea cup, while the students watched. Then he told them, “Make 100 tea cups like
this every day for the next month. When you can do that, then you’re ready to go
on to the next step.” Yet the potter wasn’t only teaching skills; he was also introducing them to the lifestyle of being a potter. So he had them eat together (using
the plates and cups they made), talk about life with each other, take walks together
looking at nature for inspiration, and even chop wood together for the kiln that
fired their pottery. Little by little and day by day, the students were becoming potters themselves, learning by watching
the master, doing as he did, and living as he lived. Becoming Catholic is a lot like this. There are stages to follow, benchmarks to watch for, and disciplines to be learned and lived before moving on the next step. The process is called the Rite
of Christian Initiation of Adults (often called RCIA).
You are invited to our Break the Ice Cream Social, Tuesday, September 4, at 7 pm in the Borromeo Café.
We will have an informal presentation of the process of RCIA and becoming Catholic and several adults who have gone
through the process to answer any questions you may have. For more information, please contact, Becca McCullough at
[email protected] or 946-2916.
Some terminology for you:
Christ: the Greek title given to Jesus meaning “anointed one;” in Hebrew, the title is translated as “messiah;” title
that acknowledges that the person is specially chosen by God to lead and protect God’s people
Christian: a person who believes that Jesus was the Son of God, the Christ, who follows the teachings of Christ, and
is baptized into the Christian faith through the ritual of baptism
Discipline: habits of a group that make up a way of life based on the teachings of a person considered the group’s
leader
RCIA: stands for “Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults;” process for adults for becoming Catholic

“He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but
a walking stick—no food, no sack, no money in their
belts.”
MARK 6:8
How different we are from the Apostles who took nothing when they ventured out to serve God. Today, we
make our journey through life more difficult because of
all the material baggage that we drag along. Yet, the
more we can let go of, the freer we are to serve God
with love and joy.
We pray that we may learn from the Apostles to give up our
strong attachment to material possessions.

y acomoda a 64 personas.
Padre Donaldo

greatly appreciated. Every day I am reminded of how
great our Lord is and how blessed I am to be in St.
Charles Borromeo Parish.
With love and gratefulness,
Barb Pues and family.
You are in our prayers.

Gym Floor Update:
The old gym floor tile has been removed from the gym
and the asbestos has been abated. The floor is now
down to the bare concrete. The contractor will begin
installation of the new gym floor on July 16. The floor
installation will take two weeks. Thereafter, the bathrooms will be remodeled and some painting will be
done. Thank you to everyone who has supported this
project.
Ladies Sodality News
Congratulations to Verona Kampmann who is the July
winner of the Quilt of the Month. You’ll be able to see
her picture with her quilt on the parish website. Many
thanks to our great quilters who make this possible.
There is still time to get in the drawing for 5 more quilts
this year. For chances, call Barb at 947-3939 or you can
get them at the church office.

It was a breezy spring day, with birds chirping, and
squirrels and bunnies scampering about. Sixteen year
old Lila drifted through the park gazing at the world,
lost in thought. Everything was so full of life. It was
finally sinking in that there was new life in her, too. A
baby. She didn’t know what to do. How could she tell
her parents? And her so-called “boyfriend?” When she
told him, he had dumped her in a heartbeat.
“I was so stupid!” she said aloud. “I let myself
down. My friends, my family, even God. I let them all
down.” People began to stare at this crazy girl talking
to herself. Lila didn’t care. She already knew she would
soon have a new reputation: teen mom.
Before, it was all so easy. Lila had always been the
lovable and innocent girl. But one little moment had
changed all that. Practicing chastity had made it easier
to be close to God, keeping her healthy and happy.
As she meandered on home, she knew what she had
to do. Lila sauntered home and entered her parents’
room. With an abundance of tears, she told them what
had happened. They looked at her with questioning
eyes, flabbergasted at what their little girl had become.
“What are you going to do?” Lila’s mother asked.
“I’m going to keep it, of course!” Lila hadn’t even
thought about an abortion. She knew it was wrong.
“Well, whatever you decide, we’ll support you, no
matter what,” Lila’s father reassured her.
During the next 9 months, Lila went to Confession,
because she was deeply sorry for what she had done.
She strived to be the best member of the
Church she could be. As Christmastime approached,
she thought of baby Jesus, the Savior, and wondered
what it would be like when her child was born. On December 25th, the big day, she named her daughter Angel. Lila taught her daughter chastity, and Angel taught
her mother to be responsible. And in the end, Angel
turned out to truly be Lila’s little angel.

Support our teens at the Steubenville Youth Conference
in Springfield, Missouri
Thirteen high school teens and two adult chaperones are spending the weekend encountering Jesus
Christ, and being challenged to live for Him. Through the power of the Sacraments, inspiring talks,
dynamic music, and expressive praise, teens are given an awesome weekend that can literally
change the course of their lives.
It is exciting to witness all that God has done at Borromeo and look with expectation toward the
future. We ask that you partner with us in our mission through prayer for our Borromeo community participating in this weekend – for safe travel and for the opportunity to witness Jesus in our
teens’ lives. For without the power of the Holy Spirit, we can do nothing. Please pray for Matt,
Alex, Mary, Colleen, Rachel, Fran, Elizabeth, Matt, Gabe, Nick, Evan, Austin, Jake, Sam, and Becca,
that their travels will be safe and their hearts open to all the Holy Spirit shares with them during the
conference.
Youth Ministry would like to thank everyone who purchased tickets for the 50/50 drawing to raise funds for the trip to
Steubenville Youth Conference. $268 was raised between ticket sales and donations. The lucky winner was parishioner
Dave Scholle! Thanks again for your support and please keep the students in your prayers as they travel to Springfield,
Missouri July 13-15. May they have a wonderful experience and come back on fire for God!

We used Fair Trade Flowers to honor Father Don and Sister Raquel
The beautiful flowers that decorated the church last weekend came from One World Flowers, a Fair Trade USA licensed importer and distributor of Fair Trade Certified™ flowers. Since the company was started in 2007, One World Flowers has been
committed to working with only Fair Trade Certified™ farms to sell flowers that are not only environmentally sustainable but
are also grown to promote social justice and economic development in the farming communities.
About 80% of cut flowers sold in the United States are grown internationally in Latin America, South America and Africa. Over
300,000 women are employed by flower producers all over the world. These women are often subjected to sexual abuse, human rights violations, exposure to toxic agrochemicals, and extremely dangerous working conditions. In many cases they are
not paid for overtime hours, and are lucky to be paid fairly for regular hours worked. Fair Trade changes all of that!
Fair Trade Certification means farms that grow flowers are given a fair price for their produce, workers enjoy safe working conditions, fair living wages are paid to workers, and environmentally friendly growing practices are used. By caring for the people
first, Fair Trade ensures that the local environment and the local economy are also protected and built up. For every order, One
World Flowers pays a 10% Fair Trade Premium back into a workers’ fund located on the farms they work with. Workers organize democratically and vote on how to use these funds to improve living conditions and end poverty in their communities.
For more info—and to order your own flowers—visit www.oneworldflowers.org. They don’t just want to sell flowers, they
want to make a world of difference.
