Citizen-government cooperation
to build a cycling-friendly
Santiago (Chile)
Velo-City, Tuesday 12 May 2009
Where we started from…
Ciudad Viva (Living City)
was born in the fight
g of 25
community organizations
against a major urban
highway concession, Chile’s
first the Costanera Norte
first,
(1996-2000). We saved our
neighbourhoods from
destruction and voted to
continue with new
proposals.
Today, Living City is an invitation to
all those who long
g for a more social
just, greener, friendlier city to
participate in its creation.
La igualdad precisa de tod@s.
Our anti-highway campaign became proposals for Transportation for Equality
Transport: a social issue, vital to equality
• Equality is essential to
democracy, safety,
security quality of life
security,
life,
the environment.
• Mobility defines
access: to education,
culture, housing, food
and clothing, work,
leisure.
leisure
• Barriers to mobility
and access can be
barriers to social equity.
