FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 08, 2015 Mass Intentions Today’s Gospel Reflection 1st Reading: Jb 7:1-4, 6-7 * Psalm: Ps 147:1-6 * 2nd Reading: 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23 * Gospel: Mk 1:29-39 HEALING MINISTRY During Jesus’ ministry “he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons.” This is the case in today’s Gospel. Jesus fulfills the vision of Psalm 147: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Jesus knew, however, that he couldn’t possibly heal all the illness in the world. No matter how many people he cured or how many hours he ministered, there always would be more suffering people like Job who craved his healing touch. His primary mission was not to rid the world of all suffering. His “purpose” was to preach the coming of the reign of God that heals, yes, but ultimately transcends and transforms earthly suffering. With Paul, Jesus could have said, “Woe to me if I do not preach” that good news. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. . “[The LORD] tells the number of the stars and calls them by name.” — Salmo 147 (146):4 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 1:1-19; Ps 104:1-2a, 5-6, 10, 12, 24, 35c; Mk 6:53-56 Tuesday: Gn 1:20 — 2:4a; Ps 8:4-9; Mk 7:1-13 Wednesday: Gn 2:4b-9, 15-17; Ps 104:1-2a, 27-28, 29bc-30; Mk 7:14-23 Thursday: Gn 2:18-25; Ps 128:1-5; Mk 7:24-30 Friday: Gn 3:1-8; Ps 32:1-2, 5-7; Mk 7:31-37 Saturday: Gn 3:9-24; Ps 90:2-6, 12-13; Mk 8:1-10 Sunday: Lv 13:1-2, 44-46; Ps 32:1-2, 5, 11; 1 Cor 10:31 — 11:1; Mk 1:40-45 Page 2 FEBRUARY 2015 07 Sat 08 Sun 09 Mon 10 Tue 11 Wed 12 Thu 13 Fri 14 Sat 5:00pm 7:00am 8:30am 10:00am 11:30am 1:00pm 4:30pm 6:00pm 7:30pm 8:00am 8:00am 7:00pm 8:00am 8:00am 8:00am 7:00pm 8:00am † Charles Gonzales † Rodolfo P. MICHAEL CHURCH PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO Dear Parishioners and friends, PASTOR’S MESSAGE The weekend of February 14 and 15 is the launching of the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) 2015 with the theme “Called to be Merciful”. We are sending letters and response cards by mail. Our goal is to have the entire community of St. Michael parish have a heart to pray, a heart to share, a heart to serve, a heart to witness, and a heart to build bridges. This is another opportunity for us to give back to God with gratitude for all the blessings He has given to us. We live and share our faith when we do concrete acts of mercy. The Annual Catholic Appeal supports service to the poor and imprisoned, education for children in Catholic schools and training of catechists, formation of candidates for the priesthood, ministry to our youth and to young people on university campuses, preparation of couples for marriage, and support for parish development in Imperial Valley. I invite you to be one in the Mission of the Church as we participate in joy ACA 2015. God bless our generosity. Fr. Bernard Ranoa P.S. When you are out of town, visit us at www.stmichaelsandiego.org. AMOUNT OF DONATION $____________ Page 3 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 08, 2015 The mission of the Academy is to form young disciples to be spiritually, intellectually, and socially prepared to integrate gospel values for living a Catholic, Christian life in a secular world. We are committed to providing a Christian environment where students experience God through exploration of their lives and the wonders of His creation. The Academy envisions itself as a partner with parents; sharing the educational ministry of the Church. Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community! St. Michael Academy is a Catholic faith filled school. Our students begin each day offering their thoughts, actions, and communications to God. SMA students strive to live as Jesus lived, love as Jesus loved, and serve as Jesus served. They are blessed to walk with Jesus everyday, in every way. We know that ‘Jesus walks on this campus’. Will you give your child the gift of knowing that he/she can walk with Jesus every day? Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school. You are invited to call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. If you think it is too expensive to send your child to a Catholic school, consider the high cost of regret in not sending your child to a Catholic school. Give us an opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s Catholic education can fit in your budget. Call 619 470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis at [email protected]. Fr. Manny offers a $1,000.00 discount to new families enrolling in the Academy. Religious Education Buena Algoso (619)470-2292 GOD’S WORD TODAY “I shall not see happiness again.” With these words, Job concludes his lament to the Lord. Job was obviously in the depths of despair. His words echo the way we can feel when we allow life’s struggles and disappointments to take hold of us. The Lord Jesus, however, has something else in mind for us. The simple story in Mark’s Gospel of the curing of Peter’s mother-inlaw shows us that the Lord wants to lift us up out of any despair that has set in. The Gospel is good news for us. If today is a day when we are feeling particularly burdened by illness or disappointment, let us, like the townspeople in today’s Gospel story, bring our cares and gather them at the Lord’s door. With hope, let us be attentive to the saving power of God’s sacred word. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company Culture of Life Please come and pray the Rosary to promote a Culture of Life every Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., in the Church. The Knights of Columbus will lead the Rosary in February. Page 4 WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE. In 1997, Pope John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. The World Day for Consecrated Life will be celebrated in parishes on February 7-8, 2015. Please pray for all those who have made commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God’s gift of their vocation. “If we are, in fact, now occupied in god deeds, we should not attribute the strength with which we are doing them to ourselves. We must not count on ourselves, because even if we know what kind of person we are today, we do not know what we will be tomorrow.” —Saint Gregory the Great ST.
