HOLY INNOCENTS VIGIL FOR ALL NASCENT HUMAN LIFE
December 28 at 7pm at St. Joseph Church
At the beginning of Advent on the evening of November 27, Pope Benedict
presided over a special prayer vigil in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome for all
nascent (unborn) human life and invited all parishes and communities
throughout the world to join him in prayer that evening by conducting their
own prayer services for the protection of all the unborn. Our Augusta
deanery priests have decided to respond to our Holy Father's initiative by
having a deanery wide prayer vigil on the evening of the feast of the Holy
Innocents, since there did not seem to be enough time to plan something
here on November 27 due to the short notice and busy schedule of penance
services, celebrations of confirmation, and the memorial Mass for Fr. Chidi.
The service here will consist of a celebration of Evening Prayer (Vespers),
Eucharistic Adoration, and choral and instrumental music to celebrate and
give thanks for God's gracious gift of life that begins for each and every
human person with conception in our mothers' wombs. We pray also that
the Lord who has infinite love and compassion for all will pour out his
healing, comfort, and reconciliation upon every person who has been
wounded in any way by the tragedy of abortion, miscarriage, or any other
death of a child. May all the Holy Innocents intercede for us in heaven that
our society and culture will truly become of culture of life!

CATHOLICS COME HOME
A Chance to Welcome Those Who Have Drifted Away
Perhaps you have heard of the massive outreach to Catholics who have
drifted away from the Church. The Diocese of Savannah is undertaking an
evangelization initiative-Catholics Come Home-that invites our sisters and
brothers back to the practice of the faith. This evangelization initiative
began this week and will continue through the end of January. Over 2000
television ads will air on the major area networks in English and Spanish.
These ads encourage those who have drifted away to come back home.
There are 20 million Catholics in the USA who no longer practice the faith
or do so sporadically. This is in addition to the 70 million Catholics who are
more active. In fact, if one takes the number of those who have drifted
away, it adds up to the second largest religion in the USA, practicing
Catholics being first. Amazing, isn’t it that so many have drifted away. We
need to invite our brothers and sisters to join us!

padres y los padrinos tendrán que asistir a dos clases Si los padrinos
son pareja deben estar casados por la iglesia y ser Católicos
practicantes. Si los padrinos son solteros deben practicar su fe. El
trabajo de los padrinos es ayudar a los padres a guiar el niño en la fe

LOS MÁRTIRES COLOMBIANOS DE LA COMUNIDAD
DE SAN JUAN DE DIOS (AÑO 1936)
En 1934 estalló en España una cruel persecución contra los católicos por
parte de los comunistas, masones y de
la extrema izquierda. En pocos meses
fueron destruidos en España más de
mil templos católicos y gravemente
averiados más de dos mil. Desde 1936
hasta 1939, los comunistas españoles
asesinaron a 4100 sacerdotes seculares;
2300 religiosos; 283 religiosas y miles
de laicos.
Unas de las víctimas de esta
persecución fueron siete jóvenes
colombianos, hermanos de la
Comunidad de San Juan de Dios, que
estaban estudiando y trabajando en
España a favor de los que padecían
enfermedades mentales y se
encontraban en condición de
abandono. Sus nombres eran: Juan
Bautista Velásquez, Esteban Maya,
Melquiades Ramírez de Sonsón,
Eugenio Ramírez, Rubén de Jesús López, Arturo Ayala y Gaspar Páez
Perdomo de Tello.
La Comunidad colombiana los había enviado a España a perfeccionar sus
estudios de enfermería, y a asistir a los enfermos que vivian en un centro
médicos ubicado en Ciempozuelos cerca de Madrid.
Hasta dicho lugar, llegaron personal del gobierno comunista español
quienes les ordenaron abandonar el plantel y dejarlo en manos de
empleados marxistas desconocedores de la medicina y de la dirección de
centros médicos. Los siete jóvenes fueron hechos prisioneros y llevados a
una cárcel de Madrid.
Gracias a la intersección de la cancillería colombiana en el país, los jóvenes
consiguieron su libertad, y ya su comunidad religiosa había gestionado los
pasajes y viáticos para su retorno al país natal. Sin embargo, antes de
abordar el tren que los transportaría a Barcelona, de donde partirían a
Colombia, oficiales del gobierno comunista español los asesinaron
cruelmente. El Cónsul de Colombia en España los identificó en el Hospital
Clínico del país, y dio aviso a la congregación religiosa.
Pese a las protestas por parte del gobierno colombiano y de la cancillería en
España, el gobierno comunista no realizó ninguna investigación pertinente,
dejando sin castigo alguno a los responsables del asesinato de los religiosos.
El Papa Juan Pablo II beatificó a los siete religiosos en 1992.
UNA SITUACIÓN ARRIESGADA
El Evangelio de Mateo que leemos
hoy nos dice que José estaba desposado con
María. Los esponsales eran mucho más que
como se entiende un compromiso hoy día y
había una ceremonia especial ante testigos,
la cual era considerada tan vinculante como
un contrato. La pareja podría esperar hasta
un año antes de que el novio llevara a su
casa a la novia para comenzar su vida de
casados. Cualquier actividad sexual durante
este tiempo no se veía con buenos ojos. Si la
novia quedaba encinta por otro hombre, su
novio tenía el derecho de denunciarla y la
podían matar a pedradas. La alternativa era
un divorcio callado. Esto último le hubiera
ahorrado a José vergüenza y humillación,
pero no hubiera hecho nada para proteger a
María. Su embarazo la hubiera expuesto a
una violenta condena y a un futuro incierto.
Dios le habló a José en un sueño y le dijo
que no dudara de recibir a María como
esposa. El nombre que Dios le dio al niño
fue Jesús, que en hebreo quiere decir “Dios
salva”. Normalmente era el padre quien
escogía el nombre del hijo en las familias
judías; su Padre celestial fue quien le puso el
nombre a este niño pero, por adopción,
entró a formar parte de la familia de José,
descendientes de David, el rey más
importante de Israel. José pudo haber
ignorado el sueño así como María pudo
haber rechazado el mensaje del ángel de que
ella iba a ser la madre del Mesías. José se
arriesgó a decirle “sí” a Dios sin considerar
las consecuencias. No todas las mujeres
tienen un “hombre justo” como José que
haga todo lo correcto y para permanecer
junto a ellas durante los retos de un
embarazo y al momento de dar a luz. No
todas las mujeres tienen los recursos para
hacerle frente a una maternidad siendo
solteras o a un niño con discapacidades
mentales o físicas. A algunas hasta les cuesta
trabajo proveer comida para su familia en
tiempos difíciles. Arriésgate como José y
comprométete a prestar alguna ayuda.
