Restoration Millwork® Installation Guidelines
Exterior PVC Trim Restoration Millwork® Installation Guidelines Safety • Restoration Millwork exterior trim is a cellular PVC product. Cutting will create PVC dust and particles. • Unless large fasteners are being used or the product is being installed in low temperatures, there should be no need to pre-drill for fastening. • When applying trimboards 10" and narrower, use two fasteners for every framing member. • It should be cut in an open, well-ventilated area. • When cutting with a power saw, workers must wear dust masks. Storage and Handling • Keep Restoration Millwork covered to protect it from dirt and debris. • To avoid damage, handle Restoration Millwork the same way you’d handle soft pine lumber. • If it does get dirty, clean it before using. Cleaning • Normal soil and grime can be removed with a soft bristle brush and a bucket of soapy water. • For especially stubborn stains or the presence of mold/mildew, request a cleaner suitable for PVC products from your local building materials retailer. • Test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area before full use. 2" • Fasteners should be no closer than 2" from the end of the board. No closer than 2" from end Gluing • To bond joints such as corners, window surrounds and long fascia runs, use PVC cement or cellular PVC adhesives. NOTE: These adhesives cure quickly and have limited working time. – If temperature at installation is 40° F or below, do not span beyond 12". • To allow sufficient time for a full cure, joints should be fastened through the joint or fastened on each side of the joint. Miter Joint (Front View) Scarf Joint (Top View) Fastener • Carbide-tipped blades designed for cutting wood should be used. Do not use fine-tooth metalcutting blades. Scarf Joint (Top View) Fastener Fastener • If Restoration Millwork is to be glued to another substrate, consult the adhesive manufacturer regarding suitability. Drilling • Adhesives alone are not recommended for fastening Restoration Millwork to a substrate. • Drill Restoration Millwork with standard woodworking drill bits. Bonding and Adhesives • Do not use bits made for rigid PVC. Restoration Millwork can be bonded to a variety of substrates, as well as itself. For best results, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines, and keep all material clean and dry. There are a variety of adhesives that are applicable for use with specific substrate combinations. Contact cement, epoxy, rubber-based and urethane adhesive systems are all generally acceptable. Specific formulations vary with each manufacturer, and performance is dependant on application. For best results, consult the manufacturer’s recommendations, and test the application for finished suitability before proceeding. • Use a standard woodworking router. • Carbide-tipped router bits are recommended. • Due to Restoration Millwork’s consistent density, routed edges will be clean and crisp. Edge Finishing Restoration Millwork can be finished by machine edging or sanding. Care must be taken not to allow excess frictional heat to build up. The edges will display the texture of the interior cell structure, which will allow for a cosmetically smooth finish. If desired, a smoother edge can be obtained by applying spackle, sanding or painting. To adhere Restoration Millwork to Restoration Millwork or other PVC; PVC pipe cement or other solvent-based adhesives work very well. Be careful to use one with a moderate or slow set up time. Plumber’s cement is generally a fast set up time, and may bond too quickly for detail work. Proper ventilation and a clean environment are essential for adequate curing. Bonding large panels face to face requires care and adequate pressure, as the solvent-based adhesives may not cure properly. Bending Painting Restoration Millwork responds to heat bending with minimal deformation of shape and finish. Bending may be accomplished utilizing convection air circulation ovens, strip heaters, or radiant heaters. Heat guns can also be used on small areas where appearance and uniformity may be compromised. Care should always be taken not to overheat the material, which could cause a rough texture and possible discoloration. Heating times and temperatures should be controlled to prevent the surface temperature from exceeding 300 degrees for more than 10 minutes. Heating should be done from both sides to guarantee uniformity. Heating times are generally about 3 minutes per 1/4" thickness of material. When material shape or heating is not uniform, longer times may be required. Heat should be applied evenly, until the product has become flexible, and easy to form. Once it has reached a workable state, no additional heat is required. Care should be taken when handling hot material, as severe burns could result from unprotected contact. • Restoration Millwork comes in Natural White and does not require painting for protection. If you want to paint it a custom color follow these important guidelines: – As with any surface to be painted, trim must be clean, dry and free of loose or peeling paint, chalk, grease, oil, dirt and mold or mildew. Window and Door Trim • Properly flash all openings to shed water to the exterior. Siding alone is not meant to be a watertight barrier. – Install flashing along the bottom of the window. The width of the flashing must extend beyond the width of the trim being installed. – Install side flashings by overlapping the bottom flashing; the width of the flashing must extend beyond the width of the trim being installed. – Install top flashing by overlapping the tops of the side flashing. For more details on flashing refer to AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturers Association) Installation Masters Program Methods A and B. NOTE: Be sure the bottom flashing is long enough to direct water over the nail hem of the siding. • For miter joints at the corners, use a PVC adhesive to adhere the joints. (See gluing instructions on previous column.) • Fasten to the substrate on both sides of the miter as appropriate. Corners • To fabricate your own corner, miter or butt trimboards together and seal the joint with a PVC adhesive. – For butted joints, use a fastener through the butt every 16". Let the corner cure, and install it as you would a wood corner. – For mitered corners, assemble the corner before installing it. Cut the miter angles, apply PVC adhesive to the length of the miter and fasten the corner pieces together. • Speed is important because of the short working time – For paint colors equivalent to an LRV of 54 or lower, paints specifically designed for such applications must be used. Rakes, Fascia and Bandboards – In every case, follow the paint manufacturer’s recommendations for use and application. • Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners designed for wood trim and siding (finishing nails are acceptable). • For best results, use fasteners with thin shanks, blunt points and full round heads. • CertainTeed is not liable for paint used on Restoration Millwork and/or the results of its use. • Do not use brads, staples, wire nails, ring-shank nails or fine-threaded wood screws. Expansion and Contraction • Fasteners should penetrate into flat, solid wood substrate or framing member a minimum of 1-1/2". – Do not span Restoration Millwork more than 24". – Apply a 100% acrylic latex paint with an LRV (light reflecting value) of 55 units or higher. (Generally, the higher the LRV, the lighter the color. The LRV of a particular color should be listed next to the color on your paint dealer’s color chart.) • Due to the extended cure times of paint applied to PVC cellular trim, we recommend installing Restoration Millwork first and then painting, unless done in a professional prefinishing operation and allowed to cure completely. Fastening – Install Restoration Millwork bead board perpendicular to walls. – For spanning 16" to 24", use a minimum 1" nominal thick board or 3/4" actual sheet. Fasteners Routing – When using Restoration Millwork bead board, fasten every 12" or less. • Restoration Millwork surfaces to be glued must be clean and should completely contact each other for best results. • Use a conventional woodworking saw to cut Restoration Millwork. • Avoid frictional heat build-up and remove shavings from the drill hole frequently. – For spanning 16" to 24", use a minimum 1" nominal thick board or 3/4" actual sheet. Ceiling applications: Cutting • If you get a rough edge from cutting, there may be several causes: excessive friction, poor board support, worn saw blades or badly aligned tools. • Restoration Millwork must not be used in load-bearing applications, but may be used in spanned applications such as soffits and ceilings. Soffit applications: • For 12" trimboards and sheets, use three fasteners every 12". • Safety glasses are required. Spanning Instructions of the adhesive. • For long runs, either butt boards together or make a scarf joint. A scarf joint is highly recommended for appearance. • Restoration Millwork will expand and contract with changes in temperature. 1-1/2" • Standard pneumatic nailers work well, generally at a pressure between 70 psi and 100 psi, depending on the type of gun, type of nail, air temperature and the density of the substrate. • Fastener heads should be flush with the product surface or slightly recessed. • Allow 1/8" per 18 feet of product for expansion and contraction. Allow this space at both ends of a long run. • Proper fastening along its entire length will minimize expansion and contraction. • Scarf joints work well to minimize seams and allow expansion and contraction. • Glued joints between trim pieces will help eliminate separation. 800-782-8777
