Reading and interpreting short plays Have you ever considered becoming a playwright (dramaturgo(a))? If the answer is yes, there are many things you will need in order to be successful, aside from a winning script (guión) and a great play theme (tema de la obra). Let´s look at the steps you could follow to stage a play. 1. After you finish writing your winning play (obra de teatro), with an ending twist that could be ironic (irónico), you will have to select the actors who will play the characters in your story. You will want to choose a group of actors with qualities that make them unique (singulares). Hopefully the actors’ gestures (gestos) will embody each character perfectly, from a villain who is greedy (codicioso) and miserly (avaro) to a friend who may turn out to be a fraud (farsante). 2. It is important to realize (darse cuenta de que) even though many people like to dream about (soñar con) becoming a famous director, to direct (dirigir) is no easy task. You will have to come up with stage directions (direcciones de escenografía), maybe create scenery (la escenografia), make sure the dialog (diálogo) is clear, and spend a lot of time rehearsing (ensayando) on the stage (el escenario). 3. But don´t worry, you will have plenty of company while you do your work. You will probably be working with the designer of the wardrobe (el vestuario) and others who will make sure all the accessories (accesorios) are in place. It will be your job to demand (reclamar) that everyone is ready when it is time to raise the curtain (levantar el telón). 4. Finally, the day of the opening, you will need the help of an usher (un acomodador), to help people at the entrance and the exit (salida), as well as to have someone to serve refreshments during intermission (el intermedio). Remember, it takes quite a bit of courage (coraje), an attitude that is persistent (persistente), and a lot of hard work to put a play together. But when you hear the audience clap (aplaudir), it will all have been worth the effort! At the end of a successful play, the curtain comes down!
