Let’s ALL Come Together
for our ALL Borromeo Parish
Mass & BBQ in the Park
Our 4th Annual Borromeo Parish Unity Day
10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 11, 2011
at Bales-DuSable Park
(Take N. 2nd to Tecumseh. Go right one block,
then left on to N. Main. The park is just past Hwy. 370)
(No 10:00am or 11:30am Mass in Church)
I and our whole staff personally hope and pray each
one of you and every family, who are proud to call Borromeo our home, will come together to celebrate our
Unity in Jesus Christ and His Holy Communion. We
will have a special involvement and blessing for all our
children who are preparing this year for First Holy
Communion—the Sacrament of Unity—and for Confirmation.
Because it is so important, we have decided to cancel the 10am and 11:30am Masses in Church and have
the Mass in the Park at 10:30am. One of many reasons is
so the choir, families with sports games, and others can
join us.
Let’s all come together and show our love for Jesus
in all our sisters and brothers regardless of our backgrounds—how we truly are One Body of Christ here at
St. Charles Borromeo.
Labor Day—Mass at 9:00 a.m.
We thank God for our God-given talents that we
use in our work and for all workers who serve our human family so diligently and caringly. The average
church-going adult in the U.S. spends 50-60 hours at
work, about that many hours at home with family members and doing family chores, and only 1 to 2 hours in
church service. Appropriately so, the Catholic Church
“solidarity begins with the sharing
of faith and culture”
has long viewed its mission as equipping Christians to
live out their faith in their work lives and their home
lives.
Labor Day Litany
Lord, give success to the work of our hands:
For all those who work . . .
For those who are unemployed or underemployed
or have lost their jobs because of economic conditions . . .
For those who work in hazardous conditions without sufficient protection . . .
For all employers that they may seek to provide a
just work environment and just wages . . .
For those that must balance job commitments with
the needs of their families . . .
Loving God, through Your Son You give us an example to love one another as He loved us. Give us the
strength to continue working to bring forth Your kingdom here on earth—a kingdom of justice and peace,
kindness and compassion, grace and mercy. Grant this
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
JOKE OF THE WEEK
A minister waited in line to have his car filled with
gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant
worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him.
Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant
pump.
“Reverend,” said the young man, “I’m so sorry
about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the
last minute to get ready for a long trip.”
The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean. It’s
the same in my business.”
Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus
and His Borromeo Family!

Borromeo Busy Bags
In the narthex of church you will notice a tree with several bags hanging on it. These are the “busy bags,” crafted by our
Junior Girl Scout Troop, and are meant for parents of little ones to grab one on the way into Mass. The bag contains
small, quiet items to keep the little ones busy during Mass. Then, we ask that you hang the bag back up on your way out
of Mass for those to enjoy after you.

 Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic?
 Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized?
 Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?
We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the
teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation,
and Eucharist during the Easter season. There are separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm, accepting setting.
Sessions begin Tuesday, September 6th, 7:00-8:30pm in the Bicentennial Room of the school. For information,

USED SHOE DRIVE
It is time to clean out your family’s unused and outgrown shoes! St. Charles Borromeo is starting a shoe
drive for the Shoeman (shoeman.org). Bring your used
or unworn shoes tied or rubber banded together starting
August 27th. There will be collection bins at the back of
church and at school!
The Shoeman sells these shoes to exporters in developing countries. Reselling the shoes creates jobs and provides a source of affordable footwear! The money the
Shoeman gets from the sales is utilized to purchase well
rigging systems, water filtration systems, and other items
necessary to provide clean water, with the main focus
now being in Kenya.
More children die of diarrhea (caused by dirty water
or inadequate sewage systems) than die of AIDS, malaria
and TB combined. Clean water stops cholera and other
deadly water born disease, brings sanitation, water for
the garden, fodder and water for the animals. The entire
economic system of a village changes when clean water is
accessible.
Kenya is going through the worst drought in 60
years. Families travel for miles daily to get water. One
million pounds of shoes will raise the money to purchase
a rig that can drill through granite to get to the clean
water. With the right equipment people can live and
stay in their homes.
It is not often that you can change the complexion of
a nation without money! All we need is your shoes!
Take the Lead. Change the World.
Join Girl Scouts Today!
Girl Scouts is the premier leadership development organization for girls and young

St. Charles Borromeo School
Dear Parishioners:
With three weeks of school under our belts and now Labor Day, we pass into the season of no turning back. We move
away from summer vacations and move toward the labor of school. That means our routines and procedures are established, we know what is expected of us, and we work together to accomplish our goals. Everything we do at St. Charles
Borromeo School works to support the mission of the school. The mission statement has been simplified and here it is:
Together we come to know and be in relationship with Jesus Christ.
Together we participate in Catholic worship.
Together we respond with Christian service.
Together we learn through rigorous academic programs.
Together we worship.
Together we serve.
Together we learn.
As we continue on our journey together, we pray for you and ask you to continue to pray for us!
God bless you, Mrs. Ann Hoffman

SCB Religious Education
Dear Parishioners:
We do have room for children in our Parish Preschool Classes. Those children meet in the school during
the 8:30 Sunday morning Mass and have a wonderful, prayer-filled spirit-led experience of Jesus on their
level, while parents attend Mass! These children must be 3 years old and not wearing diapers through 5
year olds who do not attend kindergarten. Contact Becca McCullough for more information.
There are no PSR or Preschool classes today, September 4, in celebration of Labor Day. Labor Day is a special day. Even though it is not a religious celebration, Catholics happily celebrate it because it recognizes the value of an
activity essential for human beings: work.
According to history, the idea of celebrating Labor Day in the United States came from Matthew Maguire, a machinist from
Paterson, NJ, who wanted to recognize those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”
In
most of the European and Latin American countries, the equivalent of Labor Day is celebrated on May 1, a date that Pope Pius
XII wanted to include in the Catholic liturgical calendar, creating the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This relation between faith
and work is not new in the Christian tradition. In the Gospel, Jesus includes workers, field laborers and shepherds in his parables
to teach us about God and his Kingdom.
In the seventh century, a great saint, St. Benedict of Nursia, founded the order of monks who in time would be known as
Benedictines. Benedict, in whose honor our current Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI, has chosen his name, wanted his monks, even
though they lived in a monastery praising God, to also work in order to earn their livelihood. They would worship God not
only through prayer, but also through their work. In this way, the Benedictine monks helped improve society in Europe. Their
monasteries expanded throughout the European continent, giving it spiritual unity. They also taught agricultural techniques to
the people and preserved the classical culture through their work copying the great Greek and Roman philosophical and artistic
works.
This cultural and spiritual revolution was founded in a simple motto: “ora et labora,” pray and work. Since its beginnings
then, the church has intimately linked these two activities: prayer and work.
For us Catholics, prayer is essential. St. Alphonsus Liguori used to say sharply: “He who doesn’t pray, won’t be saved.” With
this phrase, the saint wanted to emphasize how important prayer is for our life. In the same way that work guarantees bodily
food, prayer is the nourishment for the spirit. Without prayer, the soul dies, just like the body does when it is deprived of food
and water.
For this reason, Labor Day must be also a Day of Prayer for us Catholics. Both are intimately related, to the point that
prayer is a kind of “work” — in the sense that it is an activity in itself — and that work must become a prayer, if lifted and offered up to God.
Jesus reminds us that “the laborer deserves his keep.” Let us pray for all workers, and in a special way for those who work
for our spiritual health. Let us pray that we will always have a worthy job, and that the tables of families everywhere will be
filled with the bread that nourishes their body, and their souls will be nourished by the Bread of Life given to us by Jesus in the
Eucharist.
May Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Our Blessed Mother and St. Joseph, model of a prayerful worker, fill us with
blessings of work and peace. – Archbishop Jose Gomez
Women’s Fellowship continues on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays 6 am to 8 am. We finished our Women of
Grace study and have selected a study from Little Rock Scripture Study. LRSS develops and distributes Bible
study materials for adult Catholics in parishes and small faith communities who want to continue on their
journey of faith. This ministry was created in the Diocese of Little Rock in Arkansas and continues as a
ministry of the diocese, in partnership with Liturgical Press in Minnesota.
Women in our parish are invited to participate in the Bible study: Women in the New Testament. This
study has 8 lessons, and as we learned from our previous gathers, we need time to reflect and discuss these lessons. So,
we will take about 8 months to go through each lesson – answering about half the questions each time we meet. This
study will lead us into discussion and prayer about expectant faith, what it means to be touched by Jesus, and the meaning of discipleship through the lives of the women who lived in the first generation of Christianity. For more information
and/or to be sure we buy enough books, let Carrie Kremer, 922-2564 or Becca McCullough, 946-2916 know you want to
participate. The September gatherings are September 10th and September 24th!
Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!
Getting Ready for the New Roman Missal Beginning November 26/27
A time for renewed attendance and participation and love for our Mass
The following timetable will be used at our parish to prepare for the changes beginning Advent 2011:
September 18: Keep Holy the Lord’s Day: why we get to go to Mass or why the Mass is most central to
Catholics.
September 25: The Essential Role of the Assembly: All of us are called to full, active, conscious participation in the Mass (not just to watch the actors in a show)
October 2: Worshipping with Body, Mind, Soul, Music, Voice and Silence: Why we greet, genuflect,
bow, kneel, stand, sit and shake hands, etc.
October 9: The Introductory Rites: Penitential Rite and Gloria (which will be practiced at the end of the homily and will
be used every time the Gloria is sung from then on)
October 16: The Liturgy of the Word: Listening to God’s voice in the sacred Scriptures and the following silence, and our
response in the Creed and General Intercessions
October 23: The Liturgy of the Eucharist: Offering and Preparation of our Gifts, Preface and Holy, Holy (which will be
practiced after homily and used from then on)
October 30: The Eucharistic Prayer(s): Participating in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ’s dying, rising and return in the
Epiclesis, Consecration, Anamnesis, Acclamation, and Great Amen.
November 6: Preparing for Holy Communion: The Lord’s Prayer, Sign of Peace, Lamb of God, “Lord, I am not worthy .
. . “ (these sung parts will be practiced again after homily and used then on)
November 13: Holy Communion: Transubstantiation into the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
November 20: The Concluding Rite: Sent out to live the Mass as the Body of Christ.
Fun & friends!

Spiritual Adoption
Thanks to all of the families that came out for the Youth
Ministry potluck picnic at Blanchette Park. It was a huge
success! We look forward to more family events in the
future.
Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby.
As an expression of that love, Borromeo Parish announces an adoption program for young and old alike.
This weekend the parish family will have the opportunity to “spiritually adopt” a child who has been newly
conceived this month. Not all preborn babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 3,200 babies lose
their lives to abortion each day. It is these babies you
are being asked to spiritually “adopt” by praying for
them.
You may spiritually adopt a child individually or as a
family by accepting a Prayer card that will be given out
after all Masses this weekend. You will name the child
for whom you will be praying, thereby acknowledging
the humanity that each baby already has. Every day
pray the prayer on the back of the card, for the power of
prayer is great.
Monthly reports through the parish bulletin will describe your baby’s development. At the end of 9 months
we will celebrate the births of our “spiritually adopted”
babies and share the joy by bringing new baby items to
church which will then be donated to pregnant mothers
in need.
Millions of preborn babies are desperately in need of
your prayers. Won’t you please “spiritually adopt” one
and share the love for life that God has given you?
If you miss it this weekend contact the church office
or Sandy B 636-947-3421 and we will see that you get a
prayer card.
March For Life DC 2012 meeting for all teens and parents
will be held at 6:30pm in the SCB café before the regularly scheduled YM meeting. Permission slips and informational material will be handed out at this meeting.
Questions? Call Cindy Haehnel at 925-2821 or email
[email protected].
Our Pro Life Ministry is responsible for workers for 2
booths, Saturday and Sunday at the PARISH PICNIC. If
you helped last year and would like a special time to
work, call me and I will put you on the list right away.

focus of this celebration with our theme stemming from
the readings of the day. Youth Day exists to inspire and
evangelize youth . . . to celebrate and send them forth
