Often when we meet evil in the world and in our lives, it makes us sad. Just read the latest news: violence and killing in the world can rob your spirit of joy. We try to wrap our minds around it; the answer must be racism or Islamism or police brutality or mental illness. I’m not highlighting any particular event, these just seem to be the most common recurring problems. But then some physical tragedy strikes and we’re plunged back into darkness. How do you solve cancer or a car accident or a tornado? Who’s responsible for that? And if you call those an act of God, that just raises more questions. Why does God do that? I thought he loved us. Evil is a big problem. Man has been grappling with this problem of evil all throughout history; we are no different. How we look at the world—its good and its evil—affects the way we live. So here are some possible solutions (please forgive me for not remembering my sources). Some people say there is no evil. We can call the first group deniers. If you deny the problem of evil, then everything is good. There is no sin and you can indulge yourself in any way you want. We probably know many people who live this way, and probably when we were younger we wished this was true. The second group of those who deny evil think that it is just an illusion. So you spend your life freeing yourself from the illusion of evil—it’s all just a problem in your head. Buddhism tend to lean in this direction, or closer to home, the Christian Science movement. Then there are many people who admit that evil is a problem—it just has no solution. You just have to accept whatever happens because you can’t do a darn thing about it. This initially seems as a strong way to live, with your face set like stone against evil, but it usually leads to depression. This is another group who also agree that evil is a problem; in fact, they say that everything is evil. So they end up hating the world and everything and everyone in it. The world is always against them and they are in constant conflict in a battle they can never win. A final group admits the problem of evil; but they get everything wrong, like a photographic negative. They see what is truly evil as something that is good. Have you met people who say how great abortion is, an expression of free choice? What they do not see is they abuse their free choice to take the life of an innocent child. The really do see evil as something good. Then comes our final group. These are people who admit that there is a problem of evil, but that there is also a solution to the problem. They recognize the solution is only partial, but the hope of an answer guides the way they live in a beautiful way. They recognize the goodness of a world that comes forth from the hand of God, lovingly held by him each day, and yet ultimately must return to him on some day. In his love and providence God can call us home late in life by old age or even before our birth by a tragic miscarriage. He can call us home through the tiniest germs or the greatest storms. He can embrace us and bring us home even when we abuse the gift of our free will and take the life of one of our brothers or sisters. He always hates murder, yet always loves the children he has made. These terrible, personal evils—called sins, the moral evil that we create—these did not move him to destroy his world. No he loved the world so much he sent his only Son to save it, to forgive it, and to offer us the chance to reach a world where there is no more evil but only good. This Son has shown the courage to live in the midst of all the evils of the world, and offers us the help to do the same. So do not be overcome by evil, but by the grace of Jesus Christ, overcome it by an abundance of good. What a beautiful solution to the dark problem of evil! What is the answer? Christ our Light. May each of us find him as we struggle with the problem of evil. With my prayers, Fr. Jerome St. Matthew Mission Statement Declaración de la Misión de la Parroquia San Mateo We, the members of the St. Matthew Parish community being many parts but one sacramental body, are sent by the love of God to make Christ present in the world.
