With reading competing with friends,
homework and hormones, it’s
difficult to get them to sit still to read,
particularly at home.
A FEW TIPS YOU CAN USE:
• Let your child choose what to
read. Force-feeding them what
YOU want will only turn them
off.
• Talk about what is being read.
Have them make connections with
ideas or issues that are relevant.
• If struggling or bored, let them
abandon the book. Reading
shouldn’t be a chore.
• Subscribe to magazines of their
interest.
• Read the newspaper together and
discuss interesting articles.
• Be flexible with bedtime when
your child is in the zone reading.

Within reason, avoid asking them
to stop.
Play games that utilize reading.
Word- and vocabulary-building
games like Scrabble or Boggle are
great as are crossword puzzles.
Encourage them to read to a
younger sibling. Letting them take
over ritual reading at bedtime
once a week. They may find a
sibling’s enthusiasm for stories
contagious.
Find a good reading space they
can return to when at home.
Keep up on what they are reading.
If you can, read a few pages so
you can discuss it with them.
Encourage writing. Whether
it’s via snail mail or email,
suggest that they keep in touch
with distant friends or relatives.
Keeping a journal or chronicling
a family vacation will also provide
reading practice. Remember:
writing IS reading.
Suggest books from movies they
enjoyed. It’s fun to compare a
book’s details to that of a movie.
Model reading. Let them see you
reading, and share interesting
things about the book.

MAKING READING
The Arlington Public Library
offers homework help in
English and writing. Go
to the library’s website at
arlingtonlibrary.org and click
on homework help.
Many campuses offer literacy
events, programs and book
fairs. Check your individual
campus calendar for upcoming
events.
AISD students can use their
student ID card to check out
Arlington Public Library items,
access online learning services
from the library’s website,
download e-books and
audiobooks for recreational
reading, search the catalog and
place holds on materials.
The Arlington Public Library
offers a Creative Writing Club
for junior high grades that
meets every second and fourth
Thursday at the Central Library.

Con la lectura compitiendo con sus
amigos, los deberes y las hormonas, es
difícil conseguir que se queden quietos
para leer, sobre todo en casa.
ALGUNOS CONSEJOS QUE
PUEDE UTILIZAR:
• Deje que su hijo elija qué leer.
Imponer a la fuerza lo que USTED
quiere sólo apagara el interes.
• Hable de lo que se está leyendo.
Pídales que hagan conexiones con
ideas o temas que son relevantes.
• Si luchan o se aburren, permítales
abandonar el libro. La lectura no
debe ser una quehacer.
• Suscribirse a las revistas de su
interés.
• Lean el periódico juntos y discutan
artículos interesantes.
• Sea flexible con la hora de dormir
cuando su hijo está entrado en la
lectura.
• Dentro de lo razonable, evite pedir
que se detenga.
• Jugar juegos que utilizan la lectura.

electrónico, sugiera el mantenerse
en contacto con amigos o parientes
lejanos. Llevar un diario o crónica
de unas vacaciones en familia
también ofrece la práctica de
lectura. Recuerde: la escritura es la
lectura.
• Sugerir libros de las películas que
disfruten. Es divertido comparar
los detalles de un libro a la de una
película.
• Modele la lectura. Que lo vean que
esta leyendo y comparta cosas
interesantes sobre el libro.
