Scope
World-wide, humanity faces social and
environmental conflicts. The UNESCO
MAN AND BIOSPHERE PROGRAM (MAB)
with its 580 + Biosphere Reserves offer
models as how to preserve our biological
heritage and yet at the same time
promote sustainable economic activity.
The workshop will begin with overview
of the Biosphere Reserves Program
at the global level to set the stage for
more detailed presentations on the 40
Spanish Biosphere Reserves covering a
7% of country surface. We will discuss
how Spain, including Andalucía, are
proceeding with respect to the goals of
the Madrid Action Plan The scope of the
workshop will also include trans-Atlantic
comparisons with presentations and
discussions about Reserves of Mexico,
Canada and the United States.
Students are an important element in
the program, and are invited to present
posters for discussion in the workshop.
They can expect to finish the workshop
with a solid understanding of the
Reserves program and how Reserves
differ from other modes of protection of
resources, and sustainable development
initiatives.
Format of the Workshop
The workshop will bring together
17 speakers and a maximum of 50
participants (including speakers). The
scientific programme will start in the
morning on Monday, 1st October, and will
end on Wednesday, October 3rd. Ample
time for informal discussion will be
reserved.
Participants will be invited to present a
poster.
Venue of the Workshop
The workshop will be held in Baeza,
at the “Sede Antonio Machado”, a

Conference Centre of the International
University of Andalusia (UNIA). This site
includes a recently restored residence,
where speakers and participants will
be accommodated. Baeza is a World
