Pastor’s Letter
January 16/17, 2016
At a Certain Point
The Wine Ran Out
Dear Parish Family,
In the gospel of John, the very first miracle of Jesus happens at a wedding. It is just an ordinary
wedding, and Jesus, his mother, and disciples are among the guests. The miracle, too, is rather
mundane. It does not involve a great physical healing or act of forgiveness. The problem, it seems, is
simply this: the wine has run out.
Actually, anyone who has ever planned a wedding for themselves or a son or daughter can appreciate
the enormity of the problem. A wedding celebration must be perfect. After all, it is ideally a once in a
lifetime event. The celebration itself is to be a sign of the future to come: full, complete, and
endless. In biblical times, to run out of anything essential, like food, music, or wine, meant that the
celebration was over. In the gospel we have a sense that this celebration is ending all too soon. An
anxious Mary brings this to her son’s awareness: They have no more wine! What happens next is a
parable for living. Jesus turns the water to wine. He turns it to so much wine that it will never run out
and better wine than anyone ever expected. Even the maître' d is surprised!
I think in life our fears of running out are one of the greatest obstacles to our joy and our freedom. We
are careful of time and energy because we might run out. We worry about generosity because what if
we run short. We fear that our forgiveness, our mercy, or our kindness may be taken advantage of, as
if these things could ever run out.
The gospel sees things differently. With God, these most important things never run out. They are
always renewed. And more than that — the moment when we most fear things running out is the
moment when we are most filled.
Of the truth of this, I can only say that in all my years of priesthood I have never met a person who told
me that their generosity, their gift of time and friendship, their mercy and forgiveness was a mistake.
Generosity and mercy are virtues, not faults. Despite our fears and anxieties they never fail us and they
never run out. To live a generous life, a forgiving life, a merciful life is to live in God’s world. In
God’s world we never run out and even the most humble jar of water can become the finest of wines.
Today we return to the ordinary time of the church year. May we find the great miracle of God’s
generous love in the ordinary places where we live our lives.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

10:00 A.M. in Chapel Room of Parish Center
This is the blockbuster portrayal of unsung real-life hero William Wilberforce shown in
theaters worldwide in early 2007. Elected to Parliament at the young age of 21, Wilberforce, a devout Christian, worked tirelessly and courageously for many decades to abolish slavery in the British Empire, often against overwhelming opposition, and even
when threatened with serious health problems. Finally, his efforts paid off and the
Emancipation Bill was passed in 1833, one month after he died. An outstanding cast
starring Ioan Gruffudd, Romola Garai, Michael Gambon, and Albert Finney.
Saturday February 6, 2016
10:00 A.M. in Chapel Room of Parish Center
Get ready to discover the "hidden" truths of Confession — truths that have always been
embraced by theologians, saints, and mystics — now finally made understandable to all.
Based on his best-selling book, this inspiring presentation by Vinny Flynn will forever
change your view of the often misunderstood Sacrament of Confession as he explores
the "hidden" truths of this encounter with Jesus. Vinny presents a new and more profound way of going to confession, inviting you to begin an exciting personal journey to
healing and holiness.

10:00 A.M. in Chapel Room of Parish Center
In 1946, Jackie Robinson is a Negro League baseball player who never takes racism lying
down. Branch Rickey is a Major League team executive with a bold idea. Rickey
recruits Robinson for the Brooklyn Dodgers to break the unspoken color line as the
first modern African American Major League player. As both anticipate, this proves a
major challenge for Robinson and his family as they endure unrelenting racist hostility
on and off the field, from player and fan alike. As Jackie struggles against his nature to
endure such abuse without complaint, he finds allies and hope where he least expects
it. And lets his bat, base-stealing and love of the game do his talking. Winner of the
Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award. A strong cast with Chadwick
Boseman, Harrison Ford, Lucas Black and Nicole Beharie.
Our Lady of the Hamptons
Thirty members of the OLH elite chorus, the Hamptones, visited the retired

Father E Sheridan was the presider at the special liturgy to mark the
opening of the Year of Mercy at OLH. The liturgy was prepared by the students of Prep 6 and their teacher,
Mr. Peter Lynch.
The twenty-fifth annual BUCKS FOR BOOKS raffle will be held on Saturday, February 6 with the drawing
of the fifteen thousand dollar winner. Second and third prizes of five thousand and twenty-five hundred

230 ELM in Southampton.
Tickets for the Cocktail Party are available at the school, as are raffle tickets at one hundred dollars each. One
thousand tickets will be sold in this effort to raise funds for the operating budget of Our Lady of the
Hamptons School. Call 283-9140 for details.
The registration period leading toward enrollment at OLH for September 2016 will open on January 12.

APOSTOLADO HISPANO
Sólo a
