EFFECTS OF HYAL-JOINT® ON CLINICAL AND SOME SYNOVIAL FLUID
BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF YOUNG HORSES WITH
OSTEOCHONDROSIS1

Objective: The aim was to evaluate the clinical and biochemical effects of oral
hyaluronic acid (HA) (Hyal-Joint®) in young horses with osteochondrosis (OC). Our
hypotheses were that the administration of oral HA is safe, diminishes the degree of
synovial effusion and the synovial concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin
E2 (PGE2) and increases the plasma and synovial concentrations of HA. Material and
Methods: Eleven young horses with tarsocrural OC were included in a pilot randomized
double blinded controlled study. Six horses received oral HA at 250 mg/day, for 60 days
(T60) with 5 horses receiving a placebo. The initial values from the degree of synovial
effusion, NO, PGE2 and HA synovial fluid concentrations and the concentration of HA
in plasma were determined. The same variables were determined in each of the horses at
the end of treatment (T60) and again 30 days later (T90). Results: Statistically
significant differences for each of the variables evaluated between either group was not
noted at T0, T60 or T90. Nevertheless, the horses treated with oral HA showed a
tendency to word a lesser degree of synovial effusion and a trend for greater synovial HA
concentrations. Oral HA at a dose of 250 mg/day did not produce any clinical side effect
and was well tolerated by the horses.
