THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT WE SPEAK ONLY ONE LANGUAGE LOVE! This weekend, which officially ends our Easter Season, also marks the birth of our great Catholic Church through the out-pouring of the Holy Spirit on Jesus' disciples gathered in Jerusalem on Pentecost day. In order however, to have a better understanding of Pentecost day, it is important to look at it from its historical perspective. What is Pentecost then from its genesis? Briefly stated, Pentecost, from which our Christian feast is derived is a prominent Jewish feast in the calendar of Ancient Israel celebrated fifty days after the passover. It was a feast meant to celebrate the giving of the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai fifty days after the Exodus from Egypt. The Hebrews, through this law, derived a lot of pride believing that they were specially chosen by God to receive this gift after many other nations, preferring their evil ways, had rejected it.. And so for them, this feast was a feast of gratitude to God for having chosen them. It is from this that the Christian liturgical practice developed marking the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles after the resurrection of Jesus. Similar to Judaism, Pentecost, meaning "fiftieth day" is celebrated by us, Christians seven weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday. By saying that the apostles received the Spirit on Pentecost day, Luke is teaching us that for us Christians, the spirit has substituted a new law for that of Moses, that is, an external law for a new heart full of, courage, wisdom understanding and love! This ultimately means that when we are filled with the spirit, something never heard of before takes place: we love with the same love as God loves, forgive with the same compassion and mercy as God forgives. From then on, we do not need anyone to teach us (1Jn. 2:27), we do not need any law! In the book of Acts, among the transforming wonders of Pentecost was that when the apostles spoke, they were understood in many languages. Luke, again, uses this phenomenon in a symbolic sense in order to teach us that at Pentecost, the Church became universal. The Gospel is for all peoples of the earth, its message pulled down all language, racial and tribal barriers, quite contrary to what happened at Babel (Genesis 11:1-19) where people failed to understand one another moved away from each other leading to utter chaos and confusion. Therefore, St. James, let us allow ourselves to be transformed by the word of the Gospel and by the Spirit whom we have received today. Let us, in all our diversities, speak one language that everybody in our parish can understand; a language that can unite all of us together again and that language is LOVE! AMEN! JAMES ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WEEKLY BULLETIN - June 07-08, 2014 Pastor’s Corner... Fr. Robert Aliunzi, A.J. JAMES ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH WEEKLY BULLETIN - June 07-08, 2014 THE U IN JESUS Before U were thought of or time had begun, God stuck U in the name of His Son. And each time U pray, you'll see it's true, You can't spell out JesUs and not include U. You're a pretty big part of His wonderful name, For U, He was born; that's why He came. And His great love for U is the reason He died. It even takes U to spell crUcified. Isn't it thrilling and splendidly grand He rose from the dead, with U in His plan? The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew, and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U. When JesUs left earth at His upward ascension, He felt there was one thing He just had to mention. "Go into the world and tell them it's true That I love them all - Just like I love U." So many great people are spelled with a U, Don't they have a right to know JesUs too? It all depends now on what U will do, He'd like them to know, But it all starts with U. ***************************************** St. Helen Catholic Church 5510 W.
