That is the question explored in today’s three readings. The second reading, from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, reads almost like a hymn. It praises God for choosing us, for calling us to serve, and for blessing us in our service. Paul makes it clear how honored we are and how special is the call to live as children of God. This is through no doing of our own. The first reading and the Gospel use prose rather than poetry to describe the same truth: God did the choosing, not us. When the prophet Amos was berated for being a prophet, he retorted that the whole thing wasn’t his idea in the first place. Neither did the twelve apostles in today’s Gospel ask for their calling. Jesus sent them forth, two by two, to do the work of his kingdom. IN HIM WE WERE CHOSEN We return again this week to the mystery of vocation. Many of us can identify with Amos. He was thrown out of Bethel for prophesying when it wasn’t even his idea to be a prophet, much less to be one in Bethel. Can’t you just see him working with his flock of sheep or pruning his sycamore trees? Prophesying was the last thing he wanted to do. Yet prophesy he did, and well enough to have gotten into trouble for the things he said. When Jesus sent the apostles out to preach and expel demons, he warned them of the possibility that some places would not receive them or hear them. We have only to read of the persecutions and imprisonments described in the Acts of the Apostles to know how accurate his prediction was. Why would anyone want to be a prophet? Why would anyone follow Jesus under such adverse circumstances? How would Amos answer? What would the Apostles say? What do those who follow Christ say amid their own challenges and persecutions today? EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING Perhaps Amos and the Apostles, if we could ask them, would refer us to today’s second reading. In it we find the beautiful hymn that Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians. It is a proclamation of praise from a man who knew well the sufferings of the Christian. He reminds us of the glory of being a Christian: We were chosen in Christ. We were sealed with the Holy Spirit. Certainly we share in his sufferings, but by his sufferings we have been redeemed. We are the adopted children of God. In Christ we have been given “every spiritual blessing in the heavens” (Ephesians 1:3).
