Page Two Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 1, 2013 HUMILITY HUMILDAD Today’s reading from Sirach celebrates what will become the theme of today’s Gospel: humility. Pride causes us to demand from others an exalted estimate of our status, but humility allows us to see things more clearly. It allows us a broader perspective. Humility promises us the favor of God and the love of those who know us. The second reading is a study in contrasts: the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai and the giving of salvation on Mount Zion. The Law’s appearance is greeted with solemnity, mystery, even fear. But Christians are not to be afraid. Coming to God’s mountain with Jesus, “the mediator of a new covenant,” is a happy, exuberant experience. The parable in today’s Gospel concerns the danger of pride and the necessity of humility. The banquet setting, often used by Jesus, is a symbol of heaven’s abundance and of the fulfillment of God’s promise. The parable is not simply good advice on how to avoid embarrassment; it is about salvation. Abraham understood this very well. Abraham trusted the Word of God and followed it in spite of the unknown. Abraham walked the journey of faith putting himself in the hands of God who is faithful. When we put ourselves in the hands of God who is faithful, He gives us His grace and strength to walk our journey of faith. God helps us to experience His holy presence in our midst and leads us to the eternal communion in Heaven. In paragraph 11, we will notice that Abraham continues to please God with his great faith. 11. A final element of the story of Abraham is important for understanding his faith. God’s word, while bringing newness and surprise, is not at all alien to Abraham’s experience. In the voice which speaks to him, the patriarch recognizes a profound call which was always present at the core of his being. God ties his promise to that aspect of human life which has always appeared most "full of promise", namely, parenthood, the begetting of new life: "Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall name him Isaac" (Gen 17:19). The God who asks Abraham for complete trust reveals himself to be the source of all life. Faith is thus linked to God’s fatherhood, which gives rise to all creation; the God who calls Abraham is the Creator, the one who "calls into existence the things that do not exist" (Rom 4:17), the one who "chose us before the foundation of the world… and destined us for adoption as his children" (Eph 1:4-5). For Abraham, faith in God sheds light on the depths of his being, it enables him to acknowledge the wellspring of goodness at the origin of all things and to realize that his life is not the product of non-being or chance, but the fruit of a personal call and a personal love. The mysterious God who called him is no alien deity, but the God who is the origin and mainstay of all that is. The great test of Abraham’s faith, the sacrifice of his son Isaac, would show the extent to which this primordial love is capable of ensuring life even beyond death. The word which could raise up a son to one who was "as good as dead", in "the barrenness" of Sarah’s womb (cf. Rom 4:19), can also stand by his promise of a future beyond all threat or danger (cf. Heb 11:19; Rom 4:21). In the above paragraph, we learn that God continues to lead Abraham to even greater things. Abraham realizes that the call of God was always present in his life since He is the source of life and creator of all things. We understand that God creates us all with His core values, some choose not to follow His Word but Abraham listens, believes and follows it, he trusts in God´s word. God rewards him by giving him a son, Isaac. Abraham also knows that just as he, his son also belongs to God, for God is the creator of all. All human life is created by God with the the promise that we will continue to listen, believe and live our journey of faith, and most of all to love God above all things. IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED! - SB 131 Help us stop SB 131 (Beall)! Current law treats victims of child sexual abuse the same, regardless of where the abuse took place and regardless of whether the abuser worked for a public school, a private school or a religious organization. A controversial bill winding its way through the state Legislature would change all that. Under SB 131, victims who were abused by employees or volunteers of private or non-profit organizations would be able to sue those organizations even if the statute of limitations was over. Victims who may have been abused in public schools or by government workers, on the other hand, get nothing. As the bill is currently drafted, not only are they prevented from suing the school, they can’t even sue the actual perpetrator who committed the abuse. The California Catholic Conference opposes SB 131, and opposes discrimination against victims and private employers. SB 131 is also opposed by a growing coalition of that includes private schools and universities, the Police Activity League, the California YMCA/YWCA, USA Swim, USA Gymnastics, other religious groups and the La Raza Roundtable de California.
