Hieu’s Message July 31, 2016 Page 2 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time Vanity is Vanity We often tell ourselves vanity is vanity, just like what Qoheleth says in the First Reading. However, we have to work in order for us to have what we need in life. People are usually classified their status according to their profession/career/job. Through our work, we earn salary, benefits, respect and so forth. However, we often get caught up in the things of this world. Jesus told us that we don't need all of the respect, benefits and salary in order for us to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. We need to thank God for all that we have! We need to remember, no matter how wealthy we are in this world, we will soon be called home with God and we can't take anything with us, except our faith. How will we answer God's call when that time comes? The status we need to keep or secure is to be a faithful Christian with God and with one another. The benefit that we are working for is to be called God's children and to be entered into the Kingdom of Heaven afterward. God bless, Fr. Letters to the Bishop Dear Bishop Wilkerson, My name is Jacquelyn and I would like to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation because with these two years, I have learned a lot more about my faith. I have grown as a Catholic. At first, I didn't enjoy coming to church, but now, whenever I miss Mass, I feel my week is going to go wrong. Attending Mass has become something I look forward to my relationship with Jesus grew at the 2nd year retreat. At this retreat, I learned that faith can be both fun and passionate. I also feel the retreat changed my whole perspective on where God wants to lead me in life. Question of the Week How can I become ‘young in the Lord” once again, and celebrate World Youth Day right here at home by making time for intercessory prayer on behalf of others and practical service of a specific neighbor in need? In the Spotlight St. John Vianney: Consumed by the Confessional Feast August 4 The first treasure to open is God's forgiveness: from the first moment he arrived in Ars, Fr Jean-Marie had become the man consumed by the confessional. He had gone to Ars, indeed, he had become a priest to convert souls, together with Christ, to Christianize the world. His parishioners flocked to him for confession and felt the joy of God's forgiveness and of conversion. He listened, understood, read their minds, prompted repentance and comforted them. Ars became the European capital of reconciliation with God: men and women from across Europe and around the world would set out for France because they truly believed that in an out-of-the-way French village, a priest consumed by prayer and penance was speaking of God, hearing confessions and guiding souls to holiness. The pilgrimages to see him became international: 10,000, 100,000, 400,000 or perhaps even more pilgrims went every year to Ars for 30 years. They left him, renewed. And all, like the peasant of Macon who when asked: "But who did you see at Ars?", were able to reply: "I saw God, in a man". Prayer of St. John Vianney: I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life. I love You, O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You. I love You, Lord and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally... My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You, I want my heart to repeat it to You as often as I draw breath.
