Class Description
The “Spanish of the Americas” course is the study of the Spanish language used in the Latin
American continent, which differs phonetically, in lexicon, and morphology from the Spanish used
in Spain. What account for the variation are the substrates of indigenous languages in the Americas.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the causes of dialectical differentiation
between the Spanish of the Americas and the one spoken in Spain. Additionally, students will also
able to know the causes of regional variation for Spanish in Latin America.

2. Latin America: Geography, History, and Theory of Substratum.
3. Indigenous Languages of the Americas.
4. Latin and its evolution in Spain.
5. The encounter of languages and cultures from 15th Century: Andalucista Theory.
6. Dialectical Division in (Latin American) Spanish.
7. Phonetic Variation in (Latin American) Spanish.
8. Morphosyntactic Variations.
9. Lexical Variations.
10. Caribbean, Aztecan, Mayan, Quechua, and Guarani Influences.
11. African and Asian Influences.
12. Analysis of Texts.
13. Unity in differences.
14. Analysis of Texts.
15. American Multilingualism: Merits and Problems.

RESUMEN
La asignatura “El español de América” es el estudio del castellano usado en el continente americano
que difiere en lo fonético, léxico y morfológico con el castellano usado en España. La explicación
está en los sustratos de las lenguas indígenas de América.
OBJETIVO
Al final del curso el estudiante podrá comprender las causas de la diferenciación dialectal del
español de América y de España. Además, conocerá las causas de la variación regional del español
en América.
PROGRAMACIÓN DE CONTENIDOS

2. América: geografía, historia. Teoría del sustrato.
3. Lenguas indígenas de América.
4. Lengua latina y su evolución en España.
5. Encuentro de lenguas y culturas desde el siglo XV. Teoría andalucista.

8. Variaciones morfosintácticas.

10. Influencias caribeñas, aztecas, mayas, quechuas, guaraníes.
