Leyendo Europa-Reading Europe es un proyecto que se nos ocurrió a un grupo de jóvenes de la asociación Illipula
de Purchena que somos también miembros de un club de lectura juvenil de la Biblioteca Pública y somos
corresponsales juveniles en el Centro de Información Juvenil. Hemos leído libros de autores españoles y otros
países y debatido sobre ellos. Esto nos ayuda a conocer otras realidades y culturas y nos pareció que estaría
bien leer libros de otros países europeos, a la vez que darlos a conocer entre otros jóvenes mediante la publicación
de una pequeña guía de lectura, de la Unión Europea y la visita de grupos juveniles de otros países. Todo ello
para promocionar el sentimiento europeo y el diálogo intercultural.
Hemos contado para el proyecto con la ayuda de la Asociación Arci Strauss de Mussomelli (Italia), el Club Juvenil
Sócrates de Antalya (Turquía) y Euro 26 de Estonia.
Agradecemos a la Unión Europea su ayuda para desarrollar el proyecto dentro de la acción 1.2, Iniciativas Juveniles

Leyendo Europa-Reading Europe is a project which has been though by a group of youngsters members of Illipula
Youth Association of Purchena who are, at the same time, members of a Reading Club collaborating with the
Public Library and youth reporters in the youth information office. In the club we have read several books of Spanish
and international writers and debated about them. This helps to us to know other cultures and social realities and
we though it would be nice to read books of other European countries to be known by other youngsters, publishing
an European reading guide for youngsters, organizing a small European book and reading fair, receiving a visit of
several groups from other countries. All these activities and other ones to promote the European feeling and
citizenship and the intercultural dialogue.
We have carried out the project with other three European youth associations: Arci Strauss from Italy, Socrates
Youth Club (Antalya, Turkey) and Euro 26 from Estonia.
We thank the European Union its grant to develop the Project in the Framework of the wonderful Youth in Action
Programme, 1.2 Action, Transnational Youth Initiatives. We don’t forget the help given by the Town Council of
Purchena through Juan Miguel Tortosa, young Mayor, Antonio Martinez, Councillor of Youth, who understand and
encourage international projects and Manolo Sola, person in charge of the Youth Information Office and Public
Library and the collaboration of the Andalusian Youth Institute in Almería and INJUVE. We want to thank Eurodesk
Network because the Eurodesk Local Relay in Purchena helped to us to find partners and spread this project.

hope of a life together in peace. The author (writing under a pseudonym)
portrays in the protagonist, Wolf, all the inner problems, brutality and
lack of orientation seen among young people who have turned to
violence.

Boda en Auschwitz narra la historia real del austriaco Rudi Friemel y
la española Marga Ferrer que se conocieron en la Guerra Civil española,
se separaron en numerosas ocasiones por los acontecimientos y,
finalmente, consiguieron legalizar su situación en una condiciones
aparentemente imposibles: Rudi estaba recluido en el campo de
concentración de Auschwitz desde 1942 y, en 1944, Marga obtiene
permiso para una visita de un día con el objeto de celebrar la ceremonia
de matrimonio.

Spanish Marga Ferrer who met each other during the Spanish Civil
War. They separated several times because the hard circumstances
and, finally, they got married in a almost impossible situation: Rudi was
in Auschwitz from 1942 to 1994, and Marga got permission to visit him
one day to celebrate the wedding.

Erich Hackl (1954 in Steyr, Upper Austria) is an Austrian and writer.
His works have been translated into English, , and Czech, though he
is significantly better known in the -speaking world. Many of his works
bear resemblance to literature. He has won several awards but one
of them very significant is the prize of Spanish association Gypsy
Presence.

Hugo Claus (1929-2008) fue un famoso escritor belga. Fue prominente
como novelista, poeta, pintor y director de cine. Su muerte por
eutanasia, legal en Bélgica, levantó gran controversia.

Wagenstein relata el periplo de un sastre judío durante la primera mitad
del siglo XX.
Debido a los avatares políticos acaecidos en la Europa de la época,
Blumenfeld, que nace siendo súbdito del Imperio Austrohúngaro,
termina siendo austriaco no sin antes haber sido ciudadano de Polonia,
la URSS y el Tercer Reich. Isaac cuenta su paso por el ejército imperial
y distintos campos de concentración con humor e ironía, diluyendo
el evidente fondo trágico de su historia y convirtiéndola en un relato
divertido y lúcido de las convulsiones que sacudieron Europa durante

and after becoming Polish, Soviet and III Reich citizen, finishing as an
Austrian one.
Angel Wagenstein (1922), nació en una familia sefardí de Plovdiv,
Bulgaria, y pasó su infancia exiliado en París por la militancia de su
familia en movimientos socialistas y comunistas. Sus obras se han
traducido a numerosas lenguas y han sido recompensadas con
múltiples galardones (entre los que destaca el Premio Jean Monnet
de Literatura Europea).

exiled in Paris because the activism in socialist and communist
movements.

This collection of short stories deals with a different period in Cypriot
history, as seen through the lives of ordinary people from various walks
of life and social positions in the Greek Cypriot community. The four
sections of the Tetralogy are: "Times Immovable" (period before the
1955 Greek Cypriot uprising); "Times of Difficulty" (1955 and 1959);
"Times of Affluence" (1960-1974) and “Times of Suffering" (1974 coup
and the Turkish military intervention).

Fue traducido al árabe, al ruso y al rumano. Murió en 1999.
This author (Dali, Cyprus, 1974). His family moved to Egypt after he
was born. He returned to Cyprus in 1947 and was Director of the Public
Library of Famagusta. One of his most important novels is Tetralogy
of the Times translated into Arabian, Russian and Romanian. He died
in 1999.

Drago Jancar es el novelista vivo más importante de Eslovenia y el
que mayor reconocimiento ha logrado en el mundo. Su obra
marcadamente misteriosa, tiene ciertas semejanzas por su persuasión
artística con las de Gabriel García Márquez.
Darago Jankar (Maribor, 1948) is a Slovenian writer, essayist and public
intellectual. Maybe the alive novelist most important in Slovenia. His
fame began to grow outside the country, especially in Central Europe
and Spain. His novels are influenced by Gabriel García Márquez´s plays.

Synopsis/Resumen
Soldados de Salamina es una novela publicada en 2001. Existe una
adaptación cinematográfica de 2003. El título es una alusión a la
famosa batalla de Salamina en la cual la flota ateniense venció a la
persa. El libro fue aclamado tanto por lectores y críticos en España
y fue el más vendido durante meses. La historia tiene lugar durante
la Guerra Civil española (1936-1939). El núcleo central del libro es
Rafael Sánchez Mazas, escritor e idealista de la Falange Española y
colaborador de Primo de Rivera, y en particular la manera en la que
el escapó de su fusilamiento. Cuando un grupo de prisioneros es
llevado al bosque para ser ejecutado, Sánchez Mazas huye y se oculta
entre la maleza. Un soldado republicano lo encuentra y decide
perdonarle la vida y cuando es preguntado por otro soldado si hay
alguien, él responde que no.

El autor, Javier Cercas, se convierte en un personaje del libro,
apareciendo como un periodista que investiga el hecho años después
para escribir un libro. Llega a obsesionarse con encontrar al soldado
que perdonó la vida de Sánchez Mazas. Encuentra a un viejo soldado
llamado Miralles quien luchó por la República en la guerra civil y llega
a creer en el hecho de que fue el héroe, el soldado que salvó a Mazas.
El libro tiene un final abierto y el lector es libre de pensar si Miralles
fue el soldado que perdonó a Mazas, alguien que fue soldado en ese
mismo momento o un personaje heroico ficticio creado por el autor.
¿Por qué desde la Asociación Juvenil Illipula hemos seleccionado
este libro?
Porque:
Es una apasionada y emotiva declaración contra la guerra.
Es bueno no olvidar el pasado para aprender de los errores.
¿Por qué recomendamos este libro a otros jóvenes europeos?
Pensamos que si tienes que leer una única novela sobre la guerra civil
española, esa sería ésta.

Soldiers… is a novel published in 2001 by Spanish author Javier Cercas. A film
adaptation Soldados de Salamina was released in 2003. The title is an allusion to
the famous Battle of Salamis in which the Athenian fleet defeats the Persians. The
book has been acclaimed by both readers and critics in Spain and was top of the
best-seller book list for many months.
The story takes place during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The nucleus of the
book is Rafael Sánchez Mazas, writer and idealist of the Falange Española and close
collaborator of José Antonio Primo de Rivera, and in particular the event of how he
escaped his execution. When a group of prisoners is taken to the forest to be
executed, Sanchez Mazas is able to flee and hide in the bush. A Republican soldier
finds him but decides to spare his life and when asked by another soldier if anyone
is there he replies that no one is there.
The author, Javier Cercas, becomes a character of the book, appearing as a journalist
that investigates the event in order to write a book. Cercas becomes obsessed with
finding the soldier that spared the life of Sanchez Mazas. He finds an old man named
Miralles who fought for the Republicans in the Spanish civil war and is led to believe
that he in fact was the hero, the soldier who saved Sanchez Mazas from death.
The book has an open ending and the reader is left not knowing if Miralles was the
soldier who spared Sanchez Mazas, just someone who happened to be a soldier at
the same time or even a fictitious character created by Cercas in order to have a
hero.
Why the members of Illipula Youth Association have selected this book?
Because:
It’s a moving declaration against the war.
It’s good not to forget our past to learn from the mistakes.
Why do we recommend this book to European Youngsters?
We think if you had to read only one book about Spain and its civil war, this
should be that book.
