Reflection from the Pastor:
Our parish, like six other parishes in our diocese, is called Sacred Heart. Devotion
to the Sacred Heart was a popular devotion among the many Irish and German
immigrants who made up the majority of Catholics in the early decades of our
diocese. They were the heirs of a long tradition of devotion to the Sacred Heart
cultivated by Benedictine monks and nuns since the time of St. Gertrude (12561302). It was St. Gertrude who, while deep in prayer, asked St. John why he had
never spoken of the heartbeat of the Lord as he rested his head upon the Lord’s chest
during the Last Supper. His reply was that these revelations were reserved for a later
age, when the world had grown cold in its love for God.
The essence of devotion to the Sacred Heart is twofold: First, it consists of
consecration of one’s life to Jesus and repentance and a resolution to serve him;
Second, we make reparations for the indifference and ingratitude with which we
ourselves have treated him and with which others treat him.

Bulletin Bits from the Diocesan Stewardship Office
The demands of the world press on us every day, making it hard sometimes to
remember our ultimate end. The readings today remind us that this earthly life is
temporary and all the riches we may accumulate are but dust when we leave the
world at death. Jesus’ parable is a lesson to work for the riches of God’s kingdom
and to not be satisfied with the goods of the earth. St. Paul adds that we should
avoid attitudes and behaviors that are contrary to the love of God. May this earthly
life be a journey bringing us ever closer to the throne of God.
