Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time—February 9, 2014
Father Andrew’s Corner
A few dates on our calendar: this month the Foodlink
will start the monthly distribution of food for those who
are in need, especially in winter time when the work is in
short. It is planned on Thursday, February 13th at 9:00
am, on the parish parking lot in Walnut Grove. It will be
continued on second Thursday of every month.
Distribution is only for those who live in Sacramento
County: in Clarksburg, Courtland, Hood, Isleton, other
islands, Locke and Walnut Grove. The line moves quite
fast.
Ash Wednesday, this year is on March 5th.
On the 3rd week of Lent in Isleton we'll have a Retreat in
Spanish for parishioners of both parishes beginning
Monday March 24th to Friday March 28th at 6:30 pm.
First Holy Communion is planned in Isleton on Mother’s
Day, Sunday, May 11th at 12:00 pm and First Confession will be on Saturday May 10th at 10:00 am.
In Walnut Grove First Holy Communion for second
grade only will be on Sunday May 25th at 9:00 am and
First Confession on Saturday May 24th at 9:00 am. For
students older than second grade on Sunday May 18th at
9:00 am and First Confession on Saturday May 17th at
9:00 am.
Hay algunas fechas de nuestro calendario: este mes el
Foodlink empezará la distribución mensual de alimentos
para los que están en necesidades, especialmente en invierno, cuando no hay mucho trabajo. Lo se planea el
jueves Febrero del 13 a las 9:00 de al manana en la parroquia en Walnut Grove. Se continuara en segundo jueves de cada mes. La distribución es sólo para los que
viven en Municipio de Sacramento: en Clarksburg,
Courtland, Hood, Isleton, otras islas, Locke y Walnut
Grove. La línea se mueve bastante rápido.
El Miércoles de Ceniza este año hay el 5 de marzo. Durante la tercera semana de Cuaresma tendremos en Retiro en el español en Isleton para los feligreses de ambas
parroquias: del lunes 24 de marzo al viernes 28 de marzo
a las 6:30 de la tarde.
La Primera Comunión en Isleton se planea en el domingo del 11 de mayo a las 12:00 de la tarde y la Primera
Confesión en sábado antes a las 10:00 de la manana.
En Walnut Grove la Primera Comunión solo para segundo grado: domingo del 25 de mayo a las 9:00 de la manana y la Primera Confesión sábado antes a las 9:00 de
la manana. Para los estudiantes mayores: domingo del
18 de mayo a las 9:00 de la mañana y la Primera Confesión sábado antes a las 9:00 de la manana.

YES - Valentine’s Day Dance
On this Saturday, February 15 the “YES” will sponsor
their first group function for 7th through 12th graders. The
dance will begin at 6:00 pm until 10 pm. The cost is $5
which includes snacks and soft drinks. Music will be
provided by a local DJ and the event will be well chaperoned. We welcome your donations of soft drinks, water
or snacks. You may contact Donato Zaragoza or Karla
Chavez for further information.
YES—Día de Danza de San Valentíno
En el sábado del 15 de febrero, “YES” patrocinará su
primera función de grupo para los de 7 al 12 grado. El
baile comenzará a las 6:00 de la tarde hasta las 10 de la
tarde. El costo de $5.00 incluye bocadillos y refrescos.
Música por local DJ, y el evento será bien escoltado.

St. Anthony’s Bingo and Dinner will be held on Friday,
February 14. Dinner is from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm followed
by Bingo. This month’s meal is steak tacos with rice and
salad sponsored by Charlie Lancaster.
For Teens – You are Loved
The subject of love is a major part of the teenage years.
Sometimes teenagers tend to think of love in its narrowest sense, romantic love. But there are lots of different
types of love and ways to express that love. For instance,
you can love someone as a friend, but not be romantically in love with him or her. On Valentine’s Day, recognize all the different people you love in your life. Let
them know, somehow, what they mean to you, or you
can do something special for them. Perhaps you could
stick a note in your friend’s locker at school saying how
much you appreciate that he or she is always there for
you. Leave your mom or dad a note saying how much
you love them. Or recognize someone who helped you a
lot in the last 12 months. Although we should let our
friends and family know how much we love them every
day, Valentine’s Day provides a great opportunity to let
them know you care.
The Origins of St. Valentine’s Day
A quick quiz: St. Valentine was:
a. a priest in the Roman Empire who helped persecuted Christians during the reign of Claudius II, was thrown in jail
and later beheaded on Feb. 14.
b. a Catholic bishop of Terni who was beheaded.
c. someone who secretly married couples when marriage was forbidden, or suffered in Africa, or wrote letters to his
jailer's daughter, and was probably beheaded.
d. all, some, or possibly none of the above.
If you guessed d), give yourself a box of chocolates. Although the mid-February holiday celebrating love and lovers
remains wildly popular, the confusion over its origins led the Catholic Church, in 1969, to drop St. Valentine's Day from
the Roman calendar of official, worldwide Catholic feasts. (Those highly sought-after days are reserved for saints with
more clear historical record. After all, the saints are real individuals for us to imitate.) Some parishes, however, observe
the feast of St. Valentine. The roots of St. Valentine's Day lie in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was
celebrated on Feb. 15. For 800 years the Romans had dedicated this day to the god Lupercus. On Lupercalia, a young
man would draw the name of a young woman in a lottery and would then keep the woman as a sexual companion for the
year. Pope Gelasius I was, understandably, less than thrilled with this custom. So he changed the lottery to have both
young men and women draw the names of saints whom they would then emulate for the year (a change that no doubt
disappointed a few young men). Instead of Lupercus, the patron of the feast became Valentine. For Roman men, the day
continued to be an occasion to seek the affections of women, and it became a tradition to give out handwritten messages
of admiration that included Valentine's name. There was also a conventional belief in Europe during the Middle Ages
that birds chose their partners in the middle of February. Thus the day was dedicated to love, and people observed it by
writing love letters and sending small gifts to their beloved. Legend has it that Charles, duke of Orleans, sent the first
real Valentine card to his wife in 1415, when he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.
