SINOPSIS LARGA
Cuba, 1958. Rodolfo tiene 20 años, sueña hacer cine y lee incansablemente su Manual del
Director. Su padre, miembro del movimiento revolucionario, está huyendo de la policía,
situación que los obliga a abandonar la Habana y refugiarse en San Juan de la Rocas, un
pueblito, donde los sueños de hacer cine se hacen más lejanos para Rodolfo. Él insiste,
escribiendo sus guiones y mandando una carta para Hollywood, donde espera encontrar una
propuesta de trabajo en los estudios Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Decepcionado con la respuesta
decide abandonar el pueblo. Para su sorpresa, sin embargo, encuentra allí un grupo de
cineastas aficionados en plena filmación. Se presenta ante ellos como un “joven director de
la Habana”, que espera el llamado de los grandes estudios americanos. Entre los jóvenes
está Laura —prometida de Leonardo, hijo del alcalde y “productor” del grupo—. Rodolfo
se enamora de Laura y se inspira en ella para sus nuevos guiones. Escribe “El Cayo de la
Muerte”, la historia de un doctor maléfico que domina por hipnosis a los habitantes de una
isla maldita. Con ellos está Minerva, la heroína, su amada Laura, claro. Ambrosio, el padre
de Rodolfo, se une a los conspiradores de la localidad, que tienen como objetivo principal
eliminar a Duarte, un capitán de policía, principal represor de la tiranía en el pueblo.
Comienzan a pintar letreros por la ciudad, despertando las represalias de Duarte, que
comienza a sospechar de Ambrosio, padre de Rodolfo. Contrario a los reclamos
revolucionarios de su padre, que juzga infatiles sus proyectos hollywoodenses, Rodolfo
comienza a filmar su película, usando todos los recursos a su alcance, incluso el dinero del
movimiento revolucionario que su padre está guardando. En secreto y a pesar de la
rivalidad de Leonardo, su romance con Laura gana terreno y él decide hacerla su estrella.
La película concluye y se organiza su exhibición en el cine local. La historia del doctor
maléfico y dominador despierta la rebeldía de los vecinos y la proyección acaba en
revuelta. Duarte interviene, desafiando a Ambrosio y el estreno de “El Cayo de la Muerte”
termina con la muerte del capitán y la huida de Rodolfo y sus padres, nuevamente. Laura no
se decide a acompañarlo, y Rodolfo se marcha de San Juan de las Rocas, esta vez sí como
director de cine.
LONG SYNOPSIS
Cuba, 1958. Rodolfo is 20 years old and dreams of becoming a Hollywood filmmaker. His
father, a member of the revolutionary movement, is fleeing from the police, a situation that
forces the family to abandon Havana and take refuge in San Juan de las Rocas, a boring
village, where Rodolfo´s dreams of filmmaking seem far away.
Rodolfo writes a letter to the Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios, attaching his scripts, and
hopes to find a job offer. Disappointed with the response he decides to leave the village.
On the day of his departure, Rodolfo meets a group of keen amateur moviemakers on a set
at the railroad station. Rodolfo introduces himself to them as a “young director from
Havana”, awaiting a call from the big American studios. The enthusiastic youngsters invite
him to shoot with them. One of the group members, Laura, is engaged to Leonardo, the
mayor´s son and “producer” of their local movies.

Rodolfo falls in love with Laura and is inspired by her to write his latest script “The Isle of
Death”, the tale of an evil doctor who controls the inhabitants of a god-forsaken island by
hypnosis. Laura is to be Minerva, his heroine.
Ambrosio, Rodolfo’s father, joins the local revolutionaries, whose aim is to eliminate the
feared Captain Duarte, the main force of oppression in the village. The action commences.
The atmosphere is one of repression. The revolutionaries are failing in their aim.
Despite the revolutionary discourse of his father, who considers his Hollywood endeavors
childish, Rodolfo continues to write his script irrespective of the country’s plight. The
dialog between father and son becomes increasingly difficult.
The romance with Laura gains momentum and rivalry with Leonardo (the group’s
producer) forces Rodolfo to steal revolutionary funds that his father hides at home, in order
to film his movie. Laura gives in to Rodolfo and they decide to elope together after the
opening night.
The film is shown in the local cinema to a full house. The story of the evil and dictatorial
doctor is a success and succeeds in spurring the audience to rebel. The screening ends in
revolt. Captain Duarte intervenes, challenging Ambrosio and the first showing of “The Isle
of Death” ends with the death of the Captain.
Rodolfo has unintentionally succeeded in his father’s aim and the family must again flee,
only this time Rodolfo has a date. At the railroad station, Laura decides not to go with him
and Rodolfo leaves San Juan de las Rocas in the wake of his first failed affair, only this
time he really is a movie director.
SINOPSIS CORTA
Rodolfo tiene 20 años, sueña ser director de cine y llegar a Hollywood. Su padre es un
perseguido político en la Cuba de 1958. Tienen que abandonar la Habana. Sus aspiraciones
parecen entonces frustradas, pero en el pueblito donde se refugian, Rodolfo encontrará un
grupo de cineastas aficionados, una aspirante a actriz de quien se enamora y conseguirá, por
caminos insospechados, hacer su primera película.
SHORT SYNOPSIS
Cuba, 1958. Rodolfo is 20 years old and dreams of becoming a movie director. His father is
a persecuted member of the revolutionary movement and the family is obliged to flee
Havana, taking refuge in a boring village. Rodolfo’s aspirations would appear to have been
frustrated, however, in that very village, Rodolfo is to find his first love and, by unexpected
means, shall succeed in making his first film.
