Nouns usually require either a definite article (el, la, los, las) or an indefinite
article (un, una, unos, unas) before them:
„ La casa /the house
„ Una casa /a house
All the nouns have a gender (masculine, feminine or neutral).
Nouns are either
1. Common or proper (perro o Juan)
2. Concrete or abstract (plato o amor)
3. Individual or collective (árbol o rebaño)
There are some nouns that have an ambiguous gender (el mar, la mar), others
can have both genders.
There are nouns that do not change gender and the nouns where the article
makes the difference of the gender (la jóven or el jóven).
The gender of a noun can be known using the following conditions:
If the word ends with (-n, -o, -l, -e, -r, -s) there is a 99% certainty it will be
masculine.
„ Exceptions: la mano, la noche, la foto, la moto.
If the word ends with (-ma,-pa,-ta) it usually will be masculine.
If the word ends with (-d, -a, -z, -ión, -ie, -sis, -dad, -tad, -umbre) there is a
99% certainty it will be feminine.
„ Exceptions: el lápiz, el avión, el camión, el día.
