Dear Hollister Parents,
We’ve had a great start to the spring months! The Jog-A-Thon was another great success, Family Science
Night was fantastic once again, and Open House is just around the corner.
Family Science Night
Thank you to the PTA for sponsoring such a great family event for the families of Hollister. A special
thank you and applause goes out to Kirk Miller for his leadership and hard work to continue a wonderful
learning tradition for families of the Hollister community.
Open House
I’ve always thought that Open House is a special night for the students. It gives each child a chance to
shine and show off some of the excellent class work, projects, and art that they have completed this year.
It’s important that as a parent you show your enthusiasm for your child’s learning and accomplishments
by coming to Open House and letting your child “show off” just a bit.
STAR Testing
This is also the time of year when the STAR testing for 2nd – 6th grade is just around the corner. As
always, please be sure your child arrives at school on time having had a good night’s sleep and a healthy
breakfast. During the testing times, we will have a quiet and closed campus so as to give our students the
best testing environment possible. That means that all telephones in the classrooms will be turned off
and there will be no volunteers or visitors walking around the school. The office staff will not interrupt
the classrooms for any reasons.
Casino Night
Our first annual Casino Night sponsored by the PTA. This is a great opportunity to take a break from
the stress of every day life and enjoy the company of other Hollister parents. Please mark your calendars
and SAVE the DATE – May 11 th . There will be food, drinks, casino gaming for fun, and auction
items for your entertainment.

Estimadas familias de Hollister,
¡Hemos tenido un gran comienzo esta primavera! El maratón ha sido un gran éxito, la Noche Familiar de
Ciencias fue fantástica y la Noche de Visita a la escuela esta por venir.
La Noche familiar de Ciencias
Gracias a la PTA por patrocinar este gran acontecimiento familiar para las familias de Hollister. Una gracias
especiales y un aplauso para Kirk Miller por su liderazgo y trabajo dedicado en continuar una tradición de
aprendizaje maravillosa para las familias de la comunidad de Hollister.
Noche de Visita a la escuela
Yo siempre he pensado que la Noche de Visita a la Escuela es una noche especial para los estudiantes. Le da a
cada niño una oportunidad de brillar y mostrar parte del excelente trabajo hecho en clase, los proyectos, y el
arte que han completado este año. Es importante que usted como padre muestre su entusiasmo hacia el
aprendizaje y los logros de su niño viniendo a la Noche de Visita a la Escuela y permitirle a su niño "lucirse"
sólo un poco.
Exámenes STAR
Este también es el momento del año en donde pronto comenzarán los exámenes STAR para los de 2º a 6º
grado. Como siempre, por favor asegúrense que su niño no llegue tarde a la escuela, se acueste temprano el día
anterior y que tenga un desayuno saludable. Durante las horas de exámenes, tendremos la escuela cerrada y en
silencio, para brindarles a los estudiantes el mejor entorno posible. Esto quiere decir que todos los teléfonos
en las clases serán apagados y no habrá voluntarios o personas caminando por la escuela. El personal de la
oficina no podrá interrumpir las clases por ningún motivo.
Noche de Casino
Nuestra primera Noche de Casino anual patrocinado por la PTA. Esta es una gran oportunidad para tomar un
descanso del estrés de la vida diaria y disfrutar de la compañía de otros padres de Hollister. Por favor marquen
sus calendarios y APARTE LA FECHA - 11 de mayo.
Habrá comida, bebidas, juegos de casino para divertirse, y artículos de la subasta para su entretenimiento.

Fifth Disease (Slapped Cheek Syndrome)
Fifth Disease is a mild illness caused by the human parvovirus. It often begins with a low-grade
fever and nasal congestion. The classic rash appears on the face a few days later, producing
intensely red cheeks (thus, the name "slapped cheek" syndrome). The rash changes to a lace-like
pattern when it moves to the torso, arms and legs. It may last 1-4 weeks, and is more obvious
when exposed to sun, heat (especially after a warm bath), exercise or stress.
The disease is spread by respiratory droplet (sneezing, coughing), and is most contagious before
the rash appears. The incubation period (from exposure to symptoms) is 12-14 days. Your
child can attend school, unless he/she is feeling ill.
Please note: Adults and teens that contract the virus may experience joint swelling, pain, fever
and fatigue. Women who are pregnant may pass the virus to their unborn baby and should
contact their doctor immediately if exposure occurs or they develop symptoms of the disease.

La Quinta Enfermedad (Eritema infeccioso)
La quinta enfermedad es una enfermedad leve causada por el parvovirus. Muchas veces
empieza con una fiebre de bajo grado y congestión nasal. El clásico sarpullido aparece en la
cara unos cuantos días después, produciendo cachetes intensamente rojos (por eso, el otro
nombre del síndrome de "cachetada"). El sarpullido cambia a un estilo parecido a encajes
cuando pasa al torso, brazos y piernas. Puede durar 1-4 semanas, y es más obvio cuando se
expone al sol, calor (sobretodo después de un baño caliente), ejercicio o stress.
La enfermedad se transmite a través de gotas respiratorias (estornudos, tos), y es más contagiosa
antes de que aparezca el sarpullido. El período de incubación (desde estar expuesto hasta que
aparecen los síntomas) es de 12-14 días. Su hijo/a puede asistir a la escuela, al menos que
él/ella se sienta enfermo/a.
Favor de tomar en cuenta: Los adultos y adolescentes que contraen el virus podrían experimentar
hinchazones en las articulaciones, dolores, fiebre y fatiga. Las mujeres que estén embarazadas
podrían pasar el virus a su bebé nonato y deben contactar a su doctor inmediatamente si
han sido expuestos o desarrollan síntomas de la enfermedad.

Hollister families,
Thank you to those families that came out in the rain to support our Science Night. Kirk
Miller did an amazing job putting on this fun event once again! My favorite presentation was
the Ty Warner Sea Center mini exhibition. I also want to take the time to thank Emily
Garcia and the volunteers who stepped up to the plate and made Movie Days a possibility.
I know many families depend on having this available during short school days. I would like
to invite our Hollister Families to our next Association Meeting, Wednesday, April 3 at
6:00 p.m. We will be recognizing amazing Hollister volunteers and electing our 2013-2014
Board Members.
Please come and see how to get involved. Our school needs you! We still need volunteers for
Casino Night. It is our first year hosting such an event. We will need a lot of help so
everyone can enjoy the night and we can break responsibilities into shifts. Please sign up on
Parent Square or contact me directly. We will also need help with Teacher Appreciation
Week. The end of the year is fast approaching and we still have plenty to accomplish.

Mi presentación favorita fue la exposición mini de Ty Warner Sea Center. También quiero
tomarme el tiempo para agradecer a Emily Garcia y los voluntarios que ayudaron en los Días
de Películas. Sé que muchas familias dependen de esta disponibilidad durante los días cortos
de escuela. Me gustaría invitar a nuestras familias de Hollister a la siguiente Reunión de la
PTA, el miércoles 3 de abril a las 6:00 pm Estaremos reconociendo increíbles voluntarios
Hollister y elegir a nuestros miembros de la Junta 2013-2014. Por favor, vengan y vean

PARENT REMINDERS
The Hollister campus is closed during school hours, 8:25 am – 4:00 pm.
Children are not allowed to play on the playground after school.
There is supervision for 30 minutes after school is dismissed, while children are
waiting for their rides.
Children must go home after school and homework clubs.
Families and children are welcome to use the playgrounds after 4:00 pm.
BACK / STAFF PARKING LOT
We ask parents to please use the front parking lot at the school. The back parking lot is
reserved for Staff members and SBCEO buses only. Please do not block the buses or
take parking spaces. Drop off and pick up should only take place in the front lot.
SAFETY TOWN COMES TO YOUR COMMUNITY
This year our Hollister community is fortunate in having Safety Town at El Camino
School. The program will be at El Camino School on June 10 thru June 14, 2013
from 8:30 a.m. to Noon at a cost of $125 per child. You may register your child by
picking up an application at El Camino, Hollister and La Patera school offices. Due to successful
grant writing, scholarships, if qualified, will be available at the school office upon request.
Safety Town, sponsored by Soroptimist International of Santa Barbara, is an excellent program
for children going into kindergarten and currently in kindergarten. It teaches all aspects of safety
through curriculum, songs, community speakers and arts and crafts. A miniature village with
houses and cars helps to insure traffic and pedestrian safety.
If you should have a teen currently in Jr. High or High School who is interested in obtaining
community service hours, there is also an application for Counselors in Training (CIT). This
application may be downloaded at sbsafetytown.org under the Safety Town folder.
We hope that your child and/or teen can participate in this outstanding program.
