RETIRED-BORED----WANT TO HELP THE POOR IN SONOMA
COUNTY
Why not volunteer with Sonoma County’s biggest, soon to be the
smallest secret, The Society of St. Vincent de Paul? This is the organization that quietly feeds more than 85,000 of Sonoma County’s poor
and needy people annually, at their Free Dining Room in Santa Rosa’s
Railroad Square. Additionally, 15 St. Vincent de Paul Conferences,
which are affiliated with Catholic Parishes in Sonoma County, annually provide food, clothing and other essentials to another 132,400 of
Sonoma’s needy. While the Conferences and the Dining Room can always use volunteer help, The Society has an urgent need for dedicated
individuals that would be willing to serve on its Executive Committee /
Board of Directors, which provides direction/guidance to all of the Society’s operations. Executive committee positions have only a 3-year
term, and currently there are openings for President, Vice-President
and Secretary. Training and guidance for these positions will be provided.

Scripture Insights
Today, the Word of the Lord helps us to discern that over and above our human usages
we have to place God's Commandments. In fact, as time goes by, it is easy for us to distort the evangelic advice and, willingly or not, replace the Commandments or engulf
them in a punctilious meticulousness: «They eat anything when they come from the
market without first washing themselves. And there are many other traditions they
observe, for example, the ritual washing of cups, pots and plates...» (Mk 7:4). This is
why plain people, with their typical common sense, paid little attention to the doctors
of the Law or to the Pharisees, who were putting more emphasis on their human speculations than on God's Word. To the religious hypocrite Jesus applies Isaiah's prophetic
complaint («You, shallow people! How well Isaiah prophesied of you when he wrote:
‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me»: Mk 7:6). When
these last years, John Paul II, in the name of the Church, expressed his sorrow for all
the negative things that her children had done throughout history, he did it by saying
that «we had separated from the Gospel». Jesus tells us: «Nothing that enters one from
outside can make that person unclean. It is what comes out from within that makes
unclean» (Mk 7:15). What comes out of a man's heart, from a person's conscious seclusion, is what can make us bad. This malice is what harms Mankind and us specifically.
Religiosity does not consist precisely in washing our hands (remember Pilate who delivers Jesus Christ to be crucified!), but in keeping our heart pure. Speaking positively,
this is what St. Therese of Lisieux tells us in her Biographic Manuscripts: «Considering
the mystical body of the Church (...) I understood that the Church has a heart and that
this heart was burning with love». From a loving heart springs the well done deeds that
help precisely those who really need help («For I was hungry and you gave me food...»:
Mt 25:35).
Perspectivas de las Escrituras
Hoy, la Palabra del Señor nos ayuda a discernir que por encima de las costumbres
humanas están los Mandamientos de Dios. De hecho, con el paso del tiempo, es fácil
que distorsionemos los consejos evangélicos y, dándonos o no cuenta, substituimos los
Mandamientos o bien los ahogamos con una exagerada meticulosidad: «Al volver de la
plaza, si no se bañan, no comen; y hay otras muchas cosas que observan por tradición,
como la purificación de copas, jarros y bandejas...» (Mc 7,4). Es por esto que la gente
sencilla, con un sentido común popular, no hicieron caso a los doctores de la Ley ni a
los fariseos, que sobreponían especulaciones humanas a la Palabra de Dios. Jesús aplica la denuncia profética de Isaías contra los religiosamente hipócritas: «Bien profetizó
Isaías de vosotros, hipócritas, según está escrito: Este pueblo me honra con los labios,
pero su corazón está lejos de mí» (Mc 7,6). En estos últimos años, Juan Pablo II, al
pedir perdón en nombre de la Iglesia por todas las cosas negativas que sus hijos habían hecho a lo largo de la historia, lo ha manifestado en el sentido de que «nos habíamos separado del Evangelio». «Nada hay fuera del hombre que, entrando en él, pueda
contaminarle; sino lo que sale del hombre, eso es lo que contamina al hombre» (Mc
7,15), nos dice Jesús. Sólo lo que sale del corazón del hombre, desde la interioridad
consciente de la persona humana, nos puede hacer malos. Esta malicia es la que daña
a toda la Humanidad y a uno mismo. La religiosidad no consiste precisamente en lavarse las manos (¡recordemos a Pilatos que entrega a Jesucristo a la muerte!), sino
mantener puro el corazón. Dicho de una manera positiva, es lo que santa Teresa del
Niño Jesús nos dice en sus Manuscritos biográficos: «Cuando contemplaba el cuerpo
místico de Cristo (...) comprendí que la Iglesia tiene un corazón (...) encendido de
amor». De un corazón que ama surgen las obras bien hechas que ayudan en concreto a
quien lo necesita «Porque tuve hambre, y me disteis de comer...» (Mt 25,35).

THE BELLS OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE
After nearly 4 years of absence, the melodic sounds of
the carillon have returned. The bells will ring every day
and every hour from noon to 6 pm. They offer an invitation to our community that ALL ARE WELCOME.
The angelus bells that ring prior to the noon and 6
pm time are per tradition and are a call to prayer. The
Angelus prayer is a prayer of devotion for the Incarnation which includes saying the "Hail Mary"
3x. Recorded sacred music will play on the bells after
the clock strikes the hour. We will also have a bell
peal on Sunday mornings prior to the 9 am worship. A
peal refers to a prolonged ringing on a set of bells.

LAS CAMPANAS DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE
GUADALUPE
Después de casi 4 años de ausencia, los sonidos melódicos del carillón han regresado. Las campanas sonarán cada día y cada hora desde el mediodía hasta las 6
pm. Ofrecen una invitación a nuestra comunidad QUE
TODOS SON BIENVENIDOS. Las campanas ángelus
que suenan antes del mediodía y las 6 pm son por tradición y son una llamada a la oración. La oración del
Ángelus es una oración de devoción por la Encarnación que incluye diciendo el "Ave María" 3x. Música
sagrada se reproducirá en las campanas después de
que el reloj marque la hora. También tendremos un
repique de campana domingos por la mañana antes de
la misa de 9 a.m. Un repique se refiere a un timbre
prolongado en un conjunto de campanas.
