The first graders at SLEE are hard at work as independent collaborative learners. They
continue to practice the routines and structures of our Reader’s, Writer’s and Math
Workshops each day. The first graders will be working on understanding the main idea while
reading nonfiction texts. They will read and answer questions while providing evidence from
the text. We always say, “Reading is thinking!” In Writer’s Workshop, the first graders will
be working on persuasive writing during the month of January. They will form an opinion and
support their thinking with three reasons for why they have that particular opinion. This will
be very exciting! In math, the first graders continue to practice recognizing and counting
numbers to 120. They are skip-counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s too. The students are also
practicing recognizing and remembering addition and subtraction math facts on a daily basis.
These would be great skills to reinforce with your child at home! Our primary learning
objectives in January are for students to better understand the concept of place value,
solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers, and using symbols (<,>,=)
to compare numbers. The first graders continue to practice following our TONE rules every
day. Please remember that all first graders are required to read for at least 20 minutes
each night.

Los estudiantes de primer grado en la SLEE están trabajando arduamente como aprendices
colaboradores independientes. Ellos continuan practicando cada día las rutinas y estructuras
de nuestros Talleres de Lectores, Escritores y Matemáticos cada día. Los estudiantes de
primer grado estarán trabajando en entender la idea principal mientras leen textos de
ficción. Ellos leerán y responderán a preguntas mientras proveen evidencia del texto.
Nosotros siempre decimos, “¡Leer es Pensar!” En el Taller de Escritores, los estudiantes de
primer grado estarán trabajando en escritura persuasiva durante el mes de enero. Ellos
formarán una opinion y apoyaran su pensamiento con tres razones por la cual ellos tienen esa
opinion particular. Esto será bien emocionante! En matemática, los estudiantes de primer
grado continuan practicando reconocer y contar números hasta el 120. Ellos están contando
de 1, de 2, de 5 y de 10 también. Los estudiantes también estan practicando diariamente el
reconocer y recordar factores de matemática de suma y resta. ¡Estas serian buenas
destrezas para reforzar con su hijo/a en casa! Nuestro objetivo primordial de enseñanza en
enero es que los estudiantes entiendan mejor el concepto del valor del lugar, resuelvan
problemas de palabras que requieran la suma de números de tres digitos, y usando simbolos
(<, >, =) para comparar números. Los estudiantes de primer grado continuan practicando
diariamente el seguir las reglas de TONE. Favor de recordar que se requiere que todos los
estudiantes de primer grado lean por lo menos 20 minutos cada noche.
