The Messenger A monthly publication for Calvary Lutheran Church www.calvarylutheranchurch.com CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH TOGETHER IN CHRIST EMPOWERED TO BE AND MAKE DISCIPLES Come Worship With Us Saturday: 5:30 pm – Chapel Worship Sunday: 8:00 am – First Word Worship 9:00 am – Refreshments & Learning (Friendship Room) 9:45 am – Foundation & Praise Worship CONTENTS SPECIAL MUSIC` 2 RELAY FOR LIFE 2 FINANCIALS 3 FAITH FORMATION 4-5 SUMMER LEARNING 6 FOOD AND FUN NIGHT 6 JOINT CIRCLE SUMMER BIBLE STUDY 7 CAMP HOUSE 7 Volume 10, Issue VII, July 2015 CALVARY FAMILY PROMISE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS Excitement and momentum is building for the projected beginning of our Family Promise affiliate to host homeless families on the week of Sunday, August 2. On Thursday evening, June 11, 75 people representing all of the FP Host & Support congregations met at the Willmar United Methodist Church to prepare for the start up of this important ministry to parent/children families who are experiencing homelessness. I’m assuming that most of you saw the front page articles about our Kandiyohi County Family Promise in the Willmar Tribune on June 12. If you did, then you know this long planned for ministry is about to become a reality. Pastor Ron Hanson Here at Calvary, our FP committee is busy making preparations to host homeless guests in our building for our first 7 day/full week session, probably in September or October. To do that, we will need lots of Calvary volunteers. Some of the volunteers needed each day include: Evening Meal Preparation & Serving, Evening Hosts to help with early evening activities, Overnight Hosts, always two people, preferably a man and a woman. Laundry Team, Sunday afternoon Set-Up Team. End of the week, Sunday Take Down Team. We are inviting anyone who is interested in helping out as a FP volunteer to sign up on the “Family Promise Volunteer Chart” on the bulletin board in the church entrance. A date we ask you to put on your calendar is Friday night, July 10. On that night, there will be an Outdoor Concert & Sleep Out for Homelessness at the First Presbyterian Church in Willmar. The purpose of this event is to build awareness of the needs of people experiencing homelessness in our community and to raise funds for both Family Promise (to purchase a 15 passenger van) and the Heartland “Safe Harbor” program to provide motel room space for homeless people. Free Entrance passes may be picked up at our church office/Welcome Center. Information & Registration forms for the “Sleep Out” are also available. Please remember the events that Calvary is involved in for this summer. Watch for the school bus to appear toward the end of July for the collection of school supplies. These will be donated to United Way. It is early for school supplies but as you are cleaning out the children’s backpacks or school supplies maybe you will find some new items to donate. Please remember the Food Shelf during these summer months! Thanks for all the generous help given to all of our campaigns over the past year. Watch for more information in the bulletins regarding the above events. Social Concerns Committee NTY: NOT THROUGH YET There will be NO N.T.Y. in July and August. Join us again in September. On Friday, July 24, the Calvary Crusaders will once again participate in and raise money for the Relay for Life. This event represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. One of the awe-inspiring events of the Relay is the nighttime lighting of the candles in the luminary bags surrounding the track, knowing each bag represents a loved one who has fought cancer. The funds raised that evening will assist the American Cancer Society in fighting cancer. You too can help the Calvary Crusaders: join the team, purchase luminaries in honor or memory of a friend or family member who has fought cancer, or simply make a donation to the team. Luminaries will be sold at the Saturday service and on Sundays between the church services on the four weekends of June and July preceding the event, starting June 27-28. Also, join us for dinner at the Pizza Ranch. Team members will be working at the Pizza Ranch from 5-8 pm on Wednesday, July 15. We earn a portion of the evening’s sales and all of the tips. A HUGE “THANK YOU” TO EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED AND HELPED WITH CALVARY’S INTERGENERATIONAL VBS!! Our theme this year was TOGETHER IN CHRIST! ALL AGES experienced learning and growing together. We ate together, studied God’s Word together, did crafts and service together, played together, sang together, prayed together and worshiped together! It was an exciting week filled with lots of love and learning! We had over 100 people of all ages attend this event! We want to thank everyone who took a chance and embarked on this NEW journey with us! It was great seeing multiple generations invest in each other and in their Church Community to learn and grow, TOGETHER IN CHRIST! We are also grateful for the help we received with this event! Thank you to all who led our Opening and Closing Worship each night. Thank you to all who led and organized scripture, craft, games and service workshops. Thank you to all who ordered and prepared the food and to those who served the meals. Thank you to all who helped with registration, helped get supplies, ordered t-shirts and took pictures. We especially want to thank everyone who donated items for our service projects. Your response was overwhelming! The items collected went to support kits for Calvary’s Family Promise, and outreach to Bethesda Heritage and the Calvary Neighborhood. It takes many hands to “pull off” an event this size AND WE THANK EACH OF YOU FOR YOUR HELP!! Registration for Fall Faith Formation will start the beginning of August. Classes will be offered for ALL children 3 years old (by September 1, 2015) through 6th grade both on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.
