Pastors Corner Sept 27, 2015 Page 2 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time God Bestows His Gift In the first reading today the Lord took some of Moses’ spirit and bestowed it on seventy elders who would assist in doing God’s work. Later in the reading, two men who were not among the seventy elders were prophesying and Joshua asked Moses to stop them. But Moses’ response was: “Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets.” A similar situation arose in today’s Gospel reading and Jesus’ disciples attempted to stop the man. Jesus responded: “Do not prevent him.” This raises a question for us. What about those of other Christian denominations, how are we to view them? In older days it was thought necessary to convert Protestants to Catholicism. Although that mindset still persists, since the Second Vatican Council the emphasis has shifted from the need to convert to the need to work together. Although there are differences in our practices, our fundamental beliefs are the same. Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and the revelation of God is found in our common book – the Bible. Whatever church we attend is simply a means to an end – the end being complete union with God in heaven. Let us be careful on how we judge or address people who are not Catholic. Keep in mind and heart the words of Jesus that “whoever is not against us is for us.” The upcoming Year of Mercy is an additional reminder that how we welcome or judge others needs to be always flavored with mercy and compassion. Perhaps we can meet on common ground rather than separate over minor differences. Let us pray that the Lord might bestow his Spirit on people of all faiths. Blessings, Fr. Bendiciones. P. Tomás. The Happenings Sept 27, 2015 Page 3 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Catechetical Sunday Catechetical Sunday is a day on which we pray for the Church’s mission to teach the Gospel to all people. Last Sunday, over 150 parishioners were commissioned to serve as catechists in a variety of ministries here at Sacred Heart Church. Catechetical Sunday was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. It was an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. As a catechist, each person responds to a call to share the gift of faith with others, even as they deepen their own faith. This call may have reached you through the pastor, the director of religious education, or through your role as a Catholic school teacher. But know that this calling ultimately comes from God whose Holy Spirit inspires and guides you. Don’t be afraid to respond to our Lord’s invitations. Friday, Oct. 2 First Friday School Mass at 8:30AM; Noon Dismissal By Fr. Gerald Osuagwu In the Spotlight Fr. Tom Baker: Pastor of Sacred Heart Church I was born in St. Charles, Missouri in October of 1959. I am the fourth of seven children born to Chuck and Marge Baker. The family returned to Southern California in 1962 where I attended Catholic school from elementary through High School. After graduating High School, I went to Northrop Institute of Technology in Inglewood where I became a certified aircraft mechanic. While working at McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach I was inspired toward the priesthood, and eventually entered St. John’s Seminary College in the fall of 1982 and was ordained a priest in 1989. I served as associate pastor at St. Joseph the Worker Church, Canoga Park (19891994) and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Hammel Street (East Los Angeles - 19941996). I served as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Rosehill (1997-2005) before coming here to Sacred Heart. The main force that influenced me was a young adult group I was a part of in the late 70's and early 80's. Through that group I immersed myself more deeply in my faith and in the life of the Church and actually began thinking about becoming a priest. My thoughts were confirmed when some from the group asked if I had considered priesthood. The main reason I wanted to become a priest was to bring the Jesus I had gotten to know to others, in a real, personal and concrete way. The priesthood seemed to be the best vehicle to do this and I very much enjoy my ministry as a priest. What I enjoy most about my priesthood is bringing Jesus to others. Sometimes that's helping them with their marriage so they can partake of the sacraments, sometimes that's bringing the sacraments to them in their home or at the hospital, sometimes it's visiting the children in school or the youth and I can see they get it -- but when I am the vehicle for them coming into a more real and personal relationship with Jesus, it makes me very happy.
